Key Battlegrounds Tighten

September 28, 2024 at 7:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are in an even tighter race in the battlegrounds of Michigan and Wisconsin than just seven weeks ago,” according to a new New York Times/Siena College poll.

“Ms. Harris’s advantage from early August has been chiseled away slightly by Mr. Trump’s enduring strength on economic issues, the polls found, a potentially troubling development for the vice president given that the economy remains the most important issue driving voters.”

  • Wisconsin: Harris 49%, Trump 47%
  • Michigan: Harris 48%, Trump 47%
  • Nebraska 2: Harris 52%, Trump 43%

Trump Plots Massive Shake-Up of Justice Department

September 27, 2024 at 11:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump has promised immediate action on illegal immigration and oil drilling, but behind the scenes, his campaign has begun work on his most personal priority: tearing up the Justice Department,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Nothing has motivated or infuriated Trump more than his relationship with the agency. He is determined to remake it in ways that excite firebrands in his base—by replacing career employees with loyalists, by ordering investigations into those who have prosecuted him and by enlisting the Justice Department on the conservative side of the latest culture wars.”

“Rarely a week goes by without Trump excoriating the justice system.”

Democrats’ Hard-Line Evolution on Immigration

September 27, 2024 at 10:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“On her first trip to the southern border as the Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris delivered one of her party’s toughest speeches on immigration and border policy in a generation. Even as she did, she tried to paint former President Donald Trump as a feckless chaos agent without the ability to deliver the hard-line results he has promised,” the New York Times reports.

“Ms. Harris vowed to carry on President Biden’s crackdown on asylum and to impose order on the southern border, demonstrating how much the politics of immigration have shifted for Democrats. Just one presidential cycle ago, Ms. Harris and most other candidates in the party’s primary race had promised to decriminalize illegal border crossings.”

CNN: Harris vows to resurrect bipartisan border bill Trump opposed.

Trump Criticizes Harris on the Border and the Economy

September 27, 2024 at 10:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump crisscrossed the battleground state of Michigan on Friday, casting himself as an economic protectionist to blue-collar voters while attacking Vice President Kamala Harris over immigration on the same day she visited the southern border,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Trump used a pair of events to try to blame Ms. Harris for inflation and the migrant crisis, tapping into some of the populist themes that helped him win Michigan — and the presidency — in the 2016 election. In 2020, the state flipped for President Biden.”

GOP Candidates Turn to Their Wives

September 27, 2024 at 4:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “In the final, critical weeks in competitive congressional races, male Republicans struggling to appeal to female voters concerned about their records on reproductive rights are unleashing their spouses to make the pitch on their behalf.”

“Their ads often feature women in softly lit living rooms and pristine kitchens vouching for their husbands’ characters. Sometimes the women are driving SUVs with young children in the back seat as they stop for gas and groceries, talking about how their husbands are champions for their families, and can be champions for yours, too.”

“Other times, candidates film footage of a wholesome family gathering around the dining room table.”

“In at least one case, such a gathering includes a candidate at the dinner table in a family-like tableau with a woman and children who are not related.”

September 27, 2024 at 3:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Democrats May Beat Trump on Judicial Confirmations

September 27, 2024 at 3:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“With the 213th federal judge of the Biden era confirmed by the Senate this week, Democrats are now hoping to take advantage of a post-election lame duck session to finish putting their own stamp on the judiciary and match the number of judges appointed during the Trump administration,” the New York Times reports.

“As they left town until after the election, top Democrats said they intended to pursue as many confirmations as possible in November and December. It’s part of an effort to rebalance the federal courts after former President Donald J. Trump was able to name 234 mainly conservative judges to the federal bench.”

September 27, 2024 at 3:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court said on Friday that it would not restore Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to the ballot in New York after a state court judge ruled that he had used a sham address on his nominating petition,” the New York Times reports.

“The court’s brief order gave no reasons, which is typical when it rules on emergency applications. No dissents were noted.”

The Problem With New Online Polls

September 27, 2024 at 2:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Cohn look at the faults of “so-called online opt-in panels” and why these polls tend to fare poorly despite their popularity.

“Nonetheless, a majority of polls are now conducted in exactly this way: fielded online using people who joined (that is, opted into) a panel to take a survey, whether by clicking on a banner ad or via an app. Traditional polling, in contrast, attempts to take a random sample of the population, whether by calling random phone numbers or mailing random addresses.”
