Trump Was Warned of Being Poisoned
Washington Post: “Events have taken far longer to plan because of limited resources. Bulletproof glass now boxes him in at outdoor events. Campaign officials have been warned by the government about the possibility of poisoning threats that could target the former president. His team has gotten nervous about drones targeting him at golf courses and at outdoor venues after hearing briefings from the Secret Service.”
John Thune Navigates His Way to Senate Leader
Associated Press: “Throughout his political career, the South Dakota Republican has shown an athlete’s grit and sense for being in the right place at the right time. … This year, Thune — much like he ran the 800-meter race in high school — has jumped out to a pace meant to exhaust his rivals.”
“But the drive to become leader has forced Thune into a delicate pose: contrasting Trump’s style of politics, but stopping short of the direct confrontations that have ended the careers of other Republicans.”
Most Teamsters Members Prefer Trump
More than half of Teamsters members back Donald Trump over Kamala Harris for president, according to a poll of members as the union’s leadership weighs an endorsement.
Workers at Musk’s Companies Donate to Harris
“Billionaire Elon Musk has endorsed Republican former President Donald Trump in the race for the White House, but employees at his collection of companies are largely donating to Trump’s Democratic rival Kamala Harris,” Reuters reports.
This Is What a Losing Campaign Looks Like
David Frum: “The day before Vance tweeted at me, former President Donald Trump was livestreaming to promote a dubious new cryptocurrency venture. That same day, he gave an interview to the conspiracy theorist Wayne Allyn Root in which Trump reverted to old form to denounce mail-in voting because the U.S. Postal Service could not be trusted to deliver pro-Trump votes fairly.”
“The day before that, the Secret Service had fired upon a man with a rifle near Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course. The apparent assassination attempt drove the headlines, but beneath the story was the reality that a candidate for president took a day off to golf only 50 days before Election Day.”
“Trump golfs a lot, and campaigns surprisingly infrequently. When he does campaign events, he makes odd choices of venue: Today, he will appear in New York’s Nassau County. New York State has not voted Republican for president since 1984. In 2020, Trump won 38 percent of the New York vote. Yet Trump has convinced himself, or somebody has convinced him, that this year he might be competitive in New York…”
“Rarely, if ever, has a presidential campaign collapsed from seeming assurance into utter chaos as Trump-Vance has… The stink of impending defeat fills the air—and so much of the defeat would be self-inflicted.”
Fed Cuts Rates by Half Percentage Point
“The Federal Reserve voted to lower interest rates by a half percentage point, opting for a bolder start in making its first reduction since 2020,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“The long-anticipated pivot followed an all-out fight against inflation the central bank launched two years ago.”
Harris Leads in the ‘Blue Wall’ States
Three new Quinnipiac polls of likely voters:
- Pennsylvania: Harris 51%, Trump 45%
- Michigan: Harris 50%, Trump 45%
- Wisconsin: Harris 48%, Trump 47%
Said pollster Tim Malloy: “Three crucial swing states wave a red flag at the Trump campaign. The GOP’s most ‘go to’ attack strategies against Democrats on immigration and the economy may be losing momentum. Likely voters now see little daylight, in most cases, between Harris and Trump on who can best handle those key issues.”
Harris Has the Edge in Wisconsin
A new AARP poll in Wisconsin finds Kamala Harris leading Donald Trump in a multi-candidate field among registered voters, 48% to 45%.
Harris’ lead is due to nearly unanimous support among Democrats and an 11 point lead among independents.
Why Millions Have Amnesia About Trump’s Presidency
David Corn: “To regain the White House, Trump needs to cover not just the pandemic but a lot else with the mists of time, including his attempt to overturn an election and his incitement of January 6’s insurrectionist attack, a trade war with China that cost the US hundreds of thousands of jobs and hundreds of billions of dollars in GDP, his love affairs with dictators like Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin, his broken vows to boost infrastructure and to replace the Affordable Care Act with a better and cheaper program, his two impeachments, and nine years of chaos, scandals, and mean-spirited, racist, and ignorant remarks.”
“That’s a lot of forgetting to rely upon, and the fact that Trump still has a good shot at victory is a sign that he can successfully stuff much of this history into the mental recesses of the electorate. Fortunately for him, the nature of human memory plays to Trump’s favor—even, perhaps especially, when it comes to a pandemic.”
‘Kamala’s Arm Candy’
John Heilemann spent 90 minutes interviewing second gentleman Doug Emhoff, one of his first interviews since his wife became the nominee.
Andy Beshear Bans ‘Conversion Therapy’ in Kentucky
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) banned the use of “conversion therapy” on minors in his state, “calling his executive order a necessary step to protect children from a widely discredited practice that tries to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity through counseling,” the AP reports.
“The governor took action using his executive powers after efforts to enact a law banning the practice repeatedly failed in the state’s Republican-dominated legislature.”
Harris Maintains Lead Nationally
A new Economist/YouGov poll finds Kamala Harris leading Donald Trump nationally among registered voters in a multi-candidate field, 49% to 45%.
More Wireless Devices Explode in Lebanon
“Hezbollah was hit Wednesday by another wave of exploding devices, as walkie-talkies used by the group blew up in homes, cars and in operatives’ hands across Lebanon,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“The militant group was scrambling to assess the extent and nature of the explosions, which hit just a day after an attack attributed to Israel caused thousands of pagers carried by Hezbollah members to explode at roughly the same time, injuring more than 2,800 people and killing 12.”
“Details emerging from investigations into Tuesday’s pager attack pointed to a highly complex plan carried out by Israel, in which explosives were planted in thousands of devices destined for members of militant group Hezbollah and then detonated by a remote signal.”
New York Times: “For a second day, there were reports of communication devices exploding across Lebanon and in the southern suburbs of the capital, Beirut.”

U.S. Faces Deficit of 6 Million Workers
“U.S. employers will confront a shortage of some 6 million workers within a decade,” Bloomberg reports.
“A combination of retirements, mismatches between workers and available jobs, and a decline in workforce participation among men is set to drive the gap, according to by Lightcast, a provider of labor market data. Based on expected growth in the population, it projects a 6 million shortfall of workers by 2032 compared with the current level.”
