Clinton Forces Trump to Defend Key Red States

August 31, 2016 at 8:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “After weeks of Brooklyn telegraphing a competitive race in traditionally red states and making public moves that look like initial investments — boosting staff, holding fundraisers, and promising more investments — Trump is now campaigning in Arizona, which has voted Republican in 15 of the last 16 elections, while his running mate goes to Georgia, a state that’s gone red in seven of the last eight cycles.”

“That’s a deployment of precious resources away from swing states that Trump must win to make the Electoral College math work in his favor.”

Trump Trying to Prevent Arizona From Turning Blue

August 2, 2016 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump’s campaign is dispatching vice-presidential nominee Mike Pence to Arizona for two public events, “a tangible sign of Republicans’ concern that Arizona could be competitive this year,” Politico reports.

“There are already signs Arizona is on Trump’s radar: The businessman’s campaign has identified the state as a potential battleground, and recent polls have shown a close race between him and Clinton.”

Can Clinton Turn Arizona Blue?

June 18, 2016 at 12:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 148 Comments

Washington Post: “There is no recent reliable public polling in Arizona, but Democratic and Republican strategists said private research shows the presidential race as a toss-up.”

Asked whether Hillary Clinton has a path to victory, GOP strategist Charles Coughlin conceded: “I believe it’s there if she wanted to do it. Everybody always says, ‘This is the election when Latinos turn out,’ and it’s never happened. But I can actually see that happening this time.”

Trump Flops In Arizona Delegate Fight

May 1, 2016 at 8:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 21 Comments

“Donald Trump’s campaign got burned again Saturday in the hunt for loyal delegates to the Republican national convention — this time on turf where he’d recently trounced his rivals in primary elections,” Politico reports.

“Though the mogul’s campaign showed more muscle than ever in this shadow primary, he walked away in defeat in Arizona — losing about 40 of the 55 delegate slots that were up for grabs on the day. That’s despite a dominant primary win there on March 22 and a furious attempt by supporters to guarantee the election of allies to the national convention.”

Kasich Will Likely Hand Arizona to Trump

March 22, 2016 at 12:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 45 Comments

Sam Wang: “Today, John Kasich gives the first of a series of gifts to Donald Trump. What’s inside the box? Maybe 58 delegates – from Arizona, which is winner-take-all.”

“Trump leads the last three surveys done in Arizona. His median support is 47% and his median lead over second-place Ted Cruz is 13 percentage points. In addition, a combined 17-27% goes to Kasich and Rubio (several surveys were done before Rubio dropped out). Previously I pointed out that when reassigned, Kasich/Rubio supporters heavily favor Cruz over Trump. If we reassign those voters in a 4:1 ratio, the resulting medians are Trump 42.4%, Cruz 44.6%. This 2-percentage-point difference is small, and would slightly favor Cruz to win.”

It May Be Too Late to Stop Trump In Arizona

March 20, 2016 at 8:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 22 Comments

Politico: “Election day is still two days away in Arizona but well more than half of Republicans expected to vote in the state’s Tuesday primary have already cast their ballots — complicating Cruz’s attempts overtake Donald Trump as both make a late push for the state’s lucrative, winner-take-all prize of 58 delegates.”

“Arizona has among the most robust early-voting programs in the country. In Maricopa, the state’s largest county, early voters in 2016 comprise already nearly 90 percent of the county’s total GOP turnout four years ago.”

Many Arizonans Had Already Voted for Rubio

March 19, 2016 at 6:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 14 Comments

Washington Examiner: “As of last Wednesday afternoon, at least a quarter million registered Republicans had already voted in Arizona, taking advantage of the state’s 26-day early voting period. Based on the timeline, this means those 250,000 Arizona Republicans all voted without knowing Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) would no longer be a candidate by election day.”

A MBQF Consulting poll taken last week suggests that 16 percent of Arizona early voters had already cast ballots for Rubio.
