Is Clinton Not Getting Good Advice?

September 13, 2016 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Charlie Cook: “It’s interesting to watch Hillary Clinton’s highly schizophrenic campaign. On one level, in terms of strategy and tactics, organizational abilities, use of technology, and the like, it is a very impressive effort, a blending of the best from her 2008 campaign with the cream of the 2008 and 2012 Obama presidential efforts.”

“But as the concentric circles get closer to the candidate, the people occupying the inner circles are heavier on longtime Clinton loyalists rather than political pros, the campaign becomes more opaque, and the tactics get more baffling. Whether it is pre-campaign decisions on handling emails, going eight months without a press conference, or the bumbling handling of her health situation in recent days, the question keeps recurring: Is Clinton not getting good advice or just not taking it? One wonders whether there are enough people willing to stand up to her and tell her what she needs to know but may not want to hear.”

“Clinton and her campaign’s penchant for secrecy and evasiveness are contributing to a race that is far more competitive than it should be. Being the lesser of two evils with Donald Trump the alternative is a low bar. Hillary Clinton is not clearing it with ease.”

Carson Wants to See Clinton’s MRI Scan

September 13, 2016 at 9:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dr. Ben Carson, a trained neurosurgeon, told BuzzFeed that Hillary Clinton should release a “specialized MRI” as part of her medical records.

Said Carson: “In the case of Hillary Clinton, because she has had a brain injury in the past and there is a question of venous sinus thrombosis, the result of a recent specialized MRI would be very helpful. The stakes are too high for us to blindly elect someone to the presidency of the United States when we have the possibility of examining real evidence upon which to make a decision.”

Why Clinton Needs Obama More Than Ever

September 13, 2016 at 8:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “For the first time since the Democratic convention seven weeks ago, President Obama is back stumping for Hillary Clinton. And she needs him more than ever — and we’re not just talking about Clinton’s absence from the campaign trail as she recovers from pneumonia. According to our most recent batch of NBC/WSJ/Marist state polls, Clinton is underperforming among key parts of the Obama coalition: Latinos and young voters.”

“In our NBC/WSJ/Marist Nevada poll, for instance, Clinton leads Trump by a 65%-30% margin (+35) among Latinos, who made up 17% of the likely voters in the survey. But in 2012, Latinos made up 19% of Nevada’s electorate, and Obama won them, 71%-24% (+47). In addition, the NBC/WSJ/Marist Nevada poll finds Clinton ahead of Trump 58%-30% (+28) among those 18 to 29 years old, and they make up 13% of likely voters in the survey. But in 2012, those 18 to 29 made up 18% of Nevada’s electorate, and Obama won them, 68%-30% margin (+38).”

“So Clinton here is lagging Obama’s 2012 performance in both margin and the size of these voting blocs. And what does our NBC/WSJ/Marist poll of Nevada show overall? Clinton is ahead of Trump by just one point among likely voters, 45%-44% — when Obama won the state by six points, 52%-46%.”

The Brilliance of Clinton’s ‘Deplorables’ Comment

September 13, 2016 at 7:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Byron York: “Could there be a clunkier phrase than ‘basket of deplorables’? Hillary Clinton’s assertion that half — or maybe something less than half — of Donald Trump’s supporters are ‘racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, you name it’ struck a lot of observers as not just an odd turn of phrase but politically unwise. You attack your opponent, the idea was, but you don’t attack the voters.”

“But now, a few days later, the brilliance of Clinton’s remark is becoming clearer. Yes, she got a few liberal commentators to take her side and defend the substance of it. But the far bigger benefit is that in the wake of her comment, some media figures decided to devise a ‘deplorables’ quiz for Trump supporters. Is Person X deplorable? How about Person Y? The effect was to pressure Trump supporters not only to agree with Clinton’s larger point but with her precise terminology.”

Clinton Kept Illness from All But a Few

September 12, 2016 at 10:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The Democratic nominee’s decision to not widely disclose her illness and ignore her doctor’s advice to get rest set in motion perhaps the most damaging cascade of events for her in the general-election campaign — giving fresh ammunition to Republican nominee Donald Trump before their first debate.”

New York Times: “Mrs. Clinton’s inner circle was mindful of both her guardedness and her expectation of loyalty once her mind is made up. And she was optimistic that she could recover over the weekend, when she had only two brief events on her schedule, said the advisers and allies, who insisted on anonymity to disclose private conversations.”

“But Mrs. Clinton’s penchant for privacy backfired. On Monday, her campaign scrambled to reassure voters about her health, a day after she grew visibly weak and was filmed being helped into a van: unsettling images that circulated widely and led her aides to disclose the pneumonia diagnosis two days after the fact.”

GOP Lawmaker Doubts Clinton Has Pneumonia

September 12, 2016 at 1:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Gary Palmer (R-AL) told WAPI that he doubts whether Hillary Clinton’s campaign is being honest when they revealed on Sunday that the Democratic nominee has pneumonia.

Said Palmer: “They’ve tried to attribute the cough to bronchitis, they’ve tried to attribute it to pneumonia, but I sat in the Benghazi hearing for three hours. And she sat there and coughed her way through that. You know, again, you just look at the pattern and it just begs the question, are we being lied to again?”

The Least Transparent Candidate In Modern History

September 12, 2016 at 8:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

After falling ill this weekend, Hillary Clinton deserves criticism for not being forthcoming on her health. If she had been diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday, her campaign should have said something then. It was especially odd that the campaign still said nothing in the hours after she was filmed having trouble getting into her vehicle after leaving the 9/11 event in lower Manhattan. Ditching the press pool responsible for covering her only compounded the problem.

Trump Plans to Stay Quiet on Clinton’s Health

September 12, 2016 at 8:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s strategy for handling the news about Hillary Clinton’s spell of ill health will be to keep quiet,” Bloomberg reports.

“The Republican presidential nominee in the past has had trouble resisting the temptation to pounce on his rivals when he sees an opening… Instead of coming out swinging like he often does, the plan is for him and his campaign aides to refrain from commenting on the bystanders’ videos that showed Clinton stumbling or collapsing as she was helped into her vehicle by staff and Secret Service agents, according to the people briefed on the strategy.”

Hillary’s Unanswered Question

Just for members: Leonard Steinhorn, Professor of Communication at American University and a CBS Radio News Political Analyst, offers this analysis.

For all the clever tweets, sophisticated data, and focus group tested messages the Hillary Clinton campaign pumps out daily, they may have forgotten to ask the simple question that should be at the heart of every campaign: If voters had one sentence to explain why they support her candidacy, what would it be? After nineteen months of campaigning, I’m not sure they have an answer to that.

Clinton Abruptly Leaves 9/11 Ceremony

September 11, 2016 at 10:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton had a “medical episode” that required her to leave a 9/11 commemoration ceremony early, a law enforcement source who witnessed the event told Fox News.

Clinton “appeared to faint on her way into her van and had to be helped by her security” and was “clearly having some type of medical episode.”

Clinton’s stumbled off the curb, her “knees buckled” and she lost a shoe as she was helped into a van during her “unexpected early departure,” a witness told Fox News.

CBS News reports the pool of reporters who travel with Clinton “are being penned in at 9/11 memorial, not informed of her current whereabouts.”

NBC News confirms that two law enforcement officials say Clinton “fell ill and may have fainted.”

According to CBS News, the Clinton campaign says, “During the ceremony, she felt overheated so departed to go to her daughter’s apartment, and is feeling much better.”

Clinton Keeps Raising Money

September 11, 2016 at 9:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton “is not letting up on gas when it comes to fundraising,” the AP reports.

“Clinton planned to return to California on Monday for still more finance events after a lucrative August swing through dot-com mansions in Silicon Valley and celebrity-packed dinners in Los Angeles.”

“Her allies say the continued fundraising helps other Democrats because the party can keep building up voter turnout operations. It also serves as protection in a rollicking race against a man who claims to be worth $10 billion and once said he was willing to spend up to $1 billion to get elected. So far, he’s put about $60 million of his own money in his campaign.”

Clinton Backs Off ‘Basket of Deplorables’ Comment

September 10, 2016 at 2:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton partially walked back comments she made on Friday night, describing half of Donald Trump’s supporters as “deplorables” who were driven “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic” sentiments, Politico reports.

Said Clinton: “Last night I was ‘grossly generalistic,’ and that’s never a good idea. I regret saying ‘half’ — that was wrong.”

Powell Advised Clinton to Avoid State Dept Servers

September 7, 2016 at 10:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Newly-disclosed emails show that former Secretary of State Colin Powell told Hillary Clinton at the start of her tenure at the State Department that he used a personal computer to conduct government business, and took steps to avoid “going through the State Department servers,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The new emails appear to show Mr. Powell suggesting he intentionally conducted work-related emails with foreign leaders and State Department officials using a personal computer or the personal accounts of government staffers.”

Comey Defends Decision Not to Charge Clinton

September 7, 2016 at 5:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In a memo to employees, FBI Director James Comey said the decision to not recommend charges against Hillary Clinton wasn’t a close call.

Said Comey: “At the end of the day, the case itself was not a cliff-hanger; despite all the chest-beating by people no longer in government, there really wasn’t a prosecutable case.”

He concluded: “Those suggesting that we are ‘political’ or part of some ‘fix’ either don’t know us, or they are full of baloney (and maybe some of both).”
