Sessions Plays a Big Role for Trump

January 30, 2017 · 3:46 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The directives bore Trump’s name, but another man’s fingerprints were also on nearly all of them: Jeff Sessions.”

“The early days of the Trump presidency has rushed a nationalist agenda long on the fringes of American life into action — and Sessions, the quiet Alabaman who long cultivated these ideas as a Senate back-bencher, has become a singular power in this new Washington.”

“Sessions’ nomination as Trump’s attorney general is scheduled to be considered Tuesday by the Senate Judiciary Committee, yet his influence in the administration extends far beyond the Justice Department. From immigration and health care to national security and trade, Sessions is the intellectual godfather of the president’s policies. Sessions’ reach extends throughout the White House, with his aides and allies accelerating the president’s most dramatic moves, including the ban on refugees and migrants from seven mostly Muslim nations that has triggered fear around the globe.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) plans to announce on Thursday that he will oppose a fellow senator, Jeff Sessions of Alabama, when his nomination as attorney general comes to a vote, saying he is not confident that Mr. Sessions would “serve as an independent check on the incoming administration,” the New York Times reports.

Confirmation Hearing for Jeff Sessions

January 10, 2017 · 10:00 am ET · Leave a Comment

The U.S. Senate is considering the nomination of Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) to be Attorney General.

Politico: “As the Senate Judiciary Committee kicks off a two-day marathon hearing on Sessions Tuesday, the goal isn’t just to get him confirmed. Trump’s team wants him to emerge unscathed, with a clear runway to enact his policy agenda at DOJ despite his controversial history on voting rights and decades-old allegations of racism.”

Booker Will Testify Against Sessions

“In a step his office says is unprecedented, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) will testify against fellow Sen. Jeff Sessions Wednesday when the Alabama Republican, nominated to become U.S. Attorney General, comes before the Senate Judiciary Committee,” the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

“Booker will be one of three African-American lawmakers making a case against Sessions as they try to prevent him from becoming Donald Trump’s top law enforcement officer.”

Jeff Sessions Finds the Inside Track

January 8, 2017 · 10:43 am ET · Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Sessions is in many ways Mr. Trump’s antithesis: reedy-voiced, diminutive and mild-mannered, a devout Methodist and an Eagle Scout who will soon celebrate a golden wedding anniversary with his college sweetheart. His father ran a country store in the Deep South. And he is widely regarded as rigidly honest and inflexible on issues he considers matters of principle. Mr. Trump has meandered across the political spectrum; Mr. Sessions has been a deeply conservative Republican his entire life.”

“But besides their age — both are 70 — Mr. Sessions shared one trait with Mr. Trump: He was an outsider, dismissed by much of the Republican Party as a fringe player on all but his signature issue, immigration. The two men unexpectedly bonded over their willingness to buck the establishment and the unlikely hope that lower-middle- and working-class voters would carry a billionaire to the White House.”

Huntsville Times: “The genial senator stands at the portal to enormous power. But a fierce confirmation hearing awaits.”

Sessions Could Execute Immigration Crackdown

November 29, 2016 · 9:46 am ET · Leave a Comment

“For two decades in the Senate, Jeff Sessions led an anti-immigration crusade that made him an outlier in GOP politics — raging against illegal immigration and an excess of foreign workers well before Donald Trump tore onto the political scene,” Politico reports.

“But next year, Sessions likely will be the one engineering the immigration crackdown.”

“If confirmed as Trump’s attorney general, the Alabama senator would instantly become one of the most powerful people overseeing the nation’s immigration policy, with wide latitude over the kinds of immigration violations to prosecute and who would be deported.”

Trump Picks Sessions for Attorney General

November 18, 2016 · 7:37 am ET · Leave a Comment

President-elect Donald Trump has settled on Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) for attorney general, Bloomberg reports.

“It wasn’t immediately clear if Trump has formally offered the job to Sessions… A Trump aide on Thursday night called Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), a one-time Trump rival who was under serious consideration for the role, to tell him the job was instead going to Sessions.”

New York Times: “While Mr. Sessions is well liked in the Senate, his record as United States attorney in Alabama in the 1980s is very likely to become an issue for Democrats and civil rights groups expected to give it close scrutiny.”

Sessions Seen As Likely Secretary of Defense

November 14, 2016 · 9:18 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) “is the leading contender for Donald Trump’s secretary of defense, sources close to the transition say — a choice that would reward the president-elect’s most outspoken congressional loyalist but offer few olive branches to a Trump-wary Republican national security establishment,” Politico reports.

“The two men haven’t seen eye to eye on everything: Session is a budget hawk who favors caps on defense spending, while Trump has called for an arms and troops buildup that could cost $55 billion or more per year. But sources say the three-term Alabama Republican senator has still emerged as the top candidate for Pentagon leader, perhaps the most important post in the upcoming Trump Cabinet.”

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) told reporters outside the Senate chamber that he has no expectation of being Donald Trump’s vice presidential candidate and has not spoken with him about who could be on the ticket, The Hill reports.

Said Sessions: “I think that would not happen. I have not talked with him about it. Don’t bet any money on me.”

Jeff Sessions Endorses Trump

February 28, 2016 · 6:10 pm ET · 47 Comments

Donald Trump “won another major endorsement Sunday, surprising the political world when he walked onto the stage for a rally in Madison, Ala., with Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL),” Politico reports.

“His endorsement is a major blow to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, whose success may hinge on winning those Tea Party and evangelical voters and who has so often cited Sessions as an ally in his fight against the 2013 immigration reform effort.”
