Webb Won’t Make Independent Bid

February 11, 2016 at 1:16 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 18 Comments

Former Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) said he won’t run for the White House as an independent candidate, the Dallas Morning News reports.

Said Webb: “I have reluctantly concluded that in my case…we are not able to put together the kind of funding that would help us to get on the ballots in all the states. I’m going to stay involved in the discussion and see where that goes.”

Webb Will Drop Presidential Bid

October 20, 2015 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 40 Comments

Jim Webb will announce that he is dropping out of the Democratic presidential race, Fox News reports.

“Webb is said to be disillusioned with the Democratic Party — as well as the Republican Party — and how the political parties are being pulled to allegedly extreme positions by the huge amounts of loosely regulated money fueling the campaigns. While Webb is thought to be weighing a possible independent bid, he is not expected to launch an independent campaign for president Tuesday. Rather, he’s expected to take some time after his announcement to talk with people from across the political spectrum before making a decision.”

Running as an Independent Isn’t Easy

October 20, 2015 at 9:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 11 Comments

First Read makes three good points on Jim Webb possibly running for president as an independent candidate.

“One, if Webb runs as an independent, it will be an incredibly expensive enterprise to gain ballot access in the 50 states, plus DC (especially for a candidate who has raised less than $1 million so far). Two, if Webb was disappointed in the lack of exposure he received at last week’s Dem debate, he’ll get even less debate exposure as an independent. And three, running as an independent now would make him look like a sore loser.”

Webb May Run As an Independent

October 19, 2015 at 7:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 99 Comments

Former Sen. Jim Webb, who complained of not getting enough time to talk at last week’s debate and said it was “rigged,” is considering running as an independent, the New York Times reports.

Webb’s campaign says he will hold a 1 p.m. news conference on Tuesday to “discuss his candidacy, the campaign and his views of the political parties in the current election cycle.”

Webb Says Debate Was Rigged

October 18, 2015 at 11:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 41 Comments

Jim Webb (D) claimed in a speech that the first Democratic debate was rigged by CNN to favor Hillary Clinton.

Said Webb: “I’m going to be very frank, it was rigged in terms of who was going to get the time on the floor by the way that Anderson Cooper was selecting people to supposedly respond to something someone else said. It’s very difficult to win a debate when you don’t have the opportunity to speak the same amount of time on issues as the others did.”

He added: “It’s a reality that the debate was being portrayed as a showdown between Mrs. Clinton and Bernie, but if you’re going to be invited to participate and people are going to judge whether you, quote, ‘won’ or not, at least you should be able to have the kind of time that’s necessary to discuss the issues that you care about, that you’ve worked on.”

All Eyes on Bitter Chafee-Webb Rivalry

October 13, 2015 at 8:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 37 Comments

Andy Borowitz: “When the curtain rises on the first Democratic debate of the 2016 campaign, all eyes will be on the bitter rivalry between the former Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee and the former Virginia senator Jim Webb. While both camps are mum about the vicious hatred that has consumed the two men on the campaign trail, political insiders familiar with the Chafee-Webb blood feud are expecting fireworks in Las Vegas on Tuesday night.”

Quote of the Day

July 8, 2015 at 8:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 26 Comments

“I had him by the hair and was beating his head on the sidewalk when he suddenly went limp on me. Then it came to me: I had killed the fucking son of a bitch, and I would be put on report back at the Academy! So I revived him — whereupon he came to and kicked me in the head about ten times till I was able to grab his leg … Moral: Show no mercy in a fight.”

— Former Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA), quoted in Inside Reagan’s Navy.

Webb’s presidential campaign told the Daily Beast that Webb “does not comment on private conversations.”

Former Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) said that the Confederate flag has been “wrongly used as a racist symbol, but stopped short of condemning the flag outright,” according to Time.

Webb Not Sure He Can Raise the Money

February 16, 2015 at 7:25 am EST By Taegan Goddard 11 Comments

Former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb (D), “exploring a possible 2016 presidential campaign, said he is in the process of deciding whether he can “put together the type of money” needed and still remain independent of special interests,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Webb “said his chief political dilemma is building a realistic campaign without becoming beholden to donors in an era where the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision has allowed individual donors to give millions to support campaigns.”

Webb PAC Funneled Money to Family Members

December 29, 2014 at 10:38 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 44 Comments

Jim Webb (D), who launched a 2016 presidential exploratory committee last month, paid nearly $100,000 to his wife and daughter through his “Born Fighting PAC”, according to Business Insider.

“Records show his committee essentially ceased political activities once Webb revealed his decision to depart Congress. However, Born Fighting PAC continued to contribute to Webb’s family long after it stopped giving to the candidates and groups it was ostensibly established to support… The majority of the money Webb’s wife and daughter received from the committee came after it stopped giving money to politicians and political groups.”

Webb Launches Exploratory Committee

November 20, 2014 at 6:59 am EST By Taegan Goddard 28 Comments

Former Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) “became the first well-known Democrat to launch an exploratory committee to run for president on Wednesday night, saying the nation is at a ‘serious crossroads,'” Politico reports.

Said Webb: “I have decided to launch an Exploratory Committee to examine whether I should run for President in 2016. I made this decision after reflecting on numerous political commentaries and listening to many knowledgeable people. I look forward to listening and talking with more people in the coming months as I decide whether or not to run.”

Clinton Challengers Line Up On Her Left

November 10, 2014 at 8:28 am EST By Taegan Goddard 44 Comments

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and former Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) told the New Yorker they are considering challenging Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination by attacking her from the left.

“The history of Democratic primaries suggests that an insurgent can’t expect to gain recognition with only a fresh face and a superior organization. Inevitably, the candidate must attack the front-runner from the left.”
