Kasich’s Optimal Strategy Is to Drop Out In Key States

March 19, 2016 at 8:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 105 Comments

Sam Wang: “Kasich has no path to getting a majority of delegates. However, he does have a way to prevent Trump from getting a majority. That would be to completely withdraw from winner-take-all states. In fact, he should say so publicly, the way that Rubio pulled out of Ohio last week. In these states, he divides the ‘non-Trump’ voter bloc, which polling suggests is about 55-60% of Republican voters. Therefore if Kasich does not drain support from Cruz, Cruz can win those states’ delegates.”

“Kasich should still campaign in the remaining proportional states, which are: Utah, New England (New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island), the Pacific Northwest (Oregon and Washington), and New Mexico.”

Insiders See Kasich as Most Acceptable at Convention

March 18, 2016 at 7:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 17 Comments

A panel of political insiders in seven battleground states tell Politico that Gov. John Kasich “would be the most palatable of the three remaining Republican presidential candidates in a contested convention, despite the fact the Ohio governor is last in delegates and the only one mathematically eliminated from clinching a majority before the July convention.”

“The verdict was hardly unanimous: Only a 45-percent plurality of GOP insiders said Kasich was most acceptable, with the others divided between Ted Cruz (33 percent) and Donald Trump (22 percent).”

Cruz Has a New Foe In Kasich

March 17, 2016 at 7:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 26 Comments

New York Times: “After months squaring off against Sen. Marco Rubio, presuming him to be the chief obstacle to a one-on-one showdown with Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz on Wednesday emerged from the latest Republican primaries with a new foe who was actually there all along: Gov. John Kasich.”

“The transition seemed a bit jarring for all involved. The men had scarcely said a cross word about each other before Tuesday night’s contests.”

Inside Kasich’s Long Shot Strategy at Blocking Trump

March 14, 2016 at 8:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 20 Comments

Strategists for Gov. John Kasich “are studying arcane party rules that they believe could offer a path to the Republican nomination if he wins his home state,” Reuters reports.

“It is a long-shot strategy, both for Kasich and the anti-Trump forces inside the party. But if fellow GOP candidate Marco Rubio loses his own state of Florida on Tuesday – as polls predict – a surge by Kasich may be the only viable strategy for Republicans looking to stop Trump from getting the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the nomination.”

“Kasich supporters are betting that an Ohio win will give his candidacy its first real momentum, attracting donors and endorsements. From there, he could score more victories in upcoming primaries in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Wisconsin, Connecticut and California, states where Kasich polls favorably.”

Ohio’s Recovery Not Quite as Kasich Describes

March 14, 2016 at 7:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 17 Comments

New York Times: “Ohio has indeed gained several hundred thousand jobs since Mr. Kasich took office, and he turned an imposing budget gap into a surplus while also cutting income taxes, all accomplishments that back up his boasts.”

“But a closer review of his record shows the reality is more complicated. Other states recovered from the recession more quickly than Ohio did. He closed the budget shortfall in part by cutting aid to local governments, forcing some of them to raise their own taxes or cut services. And increasing sales taxes helped make the income tax cuts possible.”

“Mitt Romney will campaign with John Kasich Monday at two stops in Ohio,” NBC News reports.

“Romney is not expected to endorse the Ohio governor during the campaign swing, the source said, but it will be the first time Romney has campaigned on behalf of a Republican candidate this cycle.”

Why Kasich and Cruz Ignore Each Other

March 9, 2016 at 7:34 am EST By Taegan Goddard 6 Comments

New York Times: “Mr. Kasich wins college towns. Mr. Cruz wins ultraconservative outer suburbs. Mr. Kasich wins liberal Republicans. Mr. Cruz overperforms with evangelicals.”

“For most of the 2016 campaign, the Republicans vying to overtake Mr. Trump have squabbled bitterly. But Mr. Kasich and Mr. Cruz have so far avoided direct conflict, and Tuesday’s results show why: They are just not competing for the same voters. In theory, they could keep hassling Mr. Trump from opposite sides of the Republican Party for weeks or months to come.”

Kasich Said He Could Win Brokered Convention

March 7, 2016 at 12:16 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 24 Comments

Gov. John Kasich told the Washington Post that he would not necessarily need to build a delegate lead to win the Republican presidential nomination at the convention.

Said Kasich: “The delegates will be smart, and they’ll figure it out. I was at a convention where Ronald Reagan challenged Gerald Ford. Ford won and the party was unified. But, you know, to say – I have more than you, therefore I should get it? Go out and earn it! Don’t be whining about how it’s gonna work. Go get what you need to be the legitimate winner!”

Kasich Bets Everything on a Contested Convention

March 6, 2016 at 12:14 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 26 Comments

Gov. John Kasich knows “his only road to the Republican presidential nomination runs through a contested GOP convention this summer, and he doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with that,” Politico reports.

Said Kasich: “What’s the big deal about that, other than it’s exciting? Think about how much education our kids are going to get, about the way in which we pick a president… I think it will be very cool.”

Kasich May Have Blocked Rubio’s Path

March 4, 2016 at 4:19 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 25 Comments

David Wasserman: “It’s fair to say that Rubio’s path to the 1,237 delegates required to clinch the Republican presidential nomination by June is probably shot. And although he has bigger problems ahead of him — namely finding a way to win his home state, Florida, on March 15 — nothing has cost him so dearly to date, apart from perhaps his New Hampshire debate gaffe, as the lingering candidacy of John Kasich.”

“Just how much has Kasich cost Rubio? The answer could be up to 91 delegates, even though Kasich has won just 27 so far and has a much less plausible path forward than Rubio.”

“Ironically, in the next crucial phase of primaries, Kasich’s relationship with Rubio may evolve from parasitic to symbiotic. After Trump’s Super Tuesday domination, Rubio’s and Cruz’s goals seem to have shifted from winning 1,237 delegates by the end of the primaries to preventing Trump from winning 1,237 delegates and forcing a contested convention in Cleveland… Rubio badly needed Kasich out of the race about six weeks ago. But now, he may need him in the race more than ever.”

Kasich Stakes Hopes on Convention Battle

March 3, 2016 at 3:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 32 Comments

“As a bewildered Republican establishment frets over a divided field enabling Donald Trump to secure their party’s nomination, John Kasich isn’t all that concerned — and he’s certainly not falling in line amidst calls for him to quit so the party can unite behind a single alternative to Trump,” Politico reports.

Said Kasich: “If we win Ohio, then we’re probably going to go to a convention. It’s going to be the most exciting time.”

Pressure Increases for Kasich to Drop Out

March 2, 2016 at 8:06 am EST By Taegan Goddard 42 Comments

BuzzFeed: “Republican insiders say prominent figures within the party are going to be putting more pressure on Kasich — and his supporters — in the coming days, with some even making public calls for him to drop out. Mitt Romney has already reportedly tried to push Kasich out of the race, to little avail.”

Said one GOP insider: “You have to believe Kasich has made a deal with the devil. Why else is he still in the race? Kasich needs to look GOP voters in the eye and tell us whether he has a deal — explicit or implicit — with Donald Trump for a spot on the ticket.”

Rubio Might Be Taking Down Trump for Kasich

February 29, 2016 at 11:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard 70 Comments

Jonathan Chait: “The old Rubio strategy was not successful at winning primaries, but it was successful at making people like Rubio. Rubio has ranked at or near the top of lists of voters’ favorite second-choice candidates. As Nate Cohn points out, Rubio has time to catch up and overtake Trump, even if he loses every state on Super Tuesday. But Rubio’s strategy hinges upon successfully taking down Trump without losing his own currently wide, but relatively shallow, base of support. Will Republicans still like the new, mean, pee-pants-calling, dick-length-mocking Rubio just as much as the old, winsome version?”

“It is possible that Rubio’s mockery will finally bring down Trump. But even if so, Rubio’s popularity might come down along with him. In that case, the conflict will redound to the benefit of the candidate who is currently running the now-discarded Rubio game plan: John Kasich. The Ohio governor is using versions of the old, well-received Rubio message about refusing to attack fellow Republicans and bringing people together.”

Kasich Sees Path to Victory by March 15

February 28, 2016 at 3:17 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 44 Comments

John Weaver, chief strategist for Gov. John Kasich’s presidential campaign, dismissed the idea that Kasich was staying in the race in case there was a brokered convention, telling Politico that a path to victory will open by March 15.

“The scenario requires Ted Cruz to underperform on Tuesday, when seven Southern states, including his home state of Texas, go to the polls. It also requires Marco Rubio to lose his home state of Florida on March 15 and Kasich to win Ohio simultaneously. In that scenario, Weaver said Kasich would likely be the only candidate with a path to take on Trump.”race.

Kasich Says He’ll Leave Race If He Loses Ohio

February 27, 2016 at 4:13 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 43 Comments

“Facing pressure to leave the presidential race, Gov. John Kasich on Saturday singled out next month’s primary in his home state of Ohio as a make-or-break moment for his campaign,” the New York Times reports.

Said Kasich: “Some of the other candidates, if they can’t win their home state, they got to get out, O.K.? If I don’t win my home state, I’ll get out. But you know what? I’m going to win Ohio.”
