A new Emerson/The Hill/DC News Now poll in Maryland finds former Gov. Larry Hogan (R) tied with Rep. David Trone (D) in the U.S. Senate race, 42% to 42%, and 16% undecided.
Hogan holds a seven-point lead in a hypothetical matchup against Angela Alsobrooks (D), 44% to 37%, with 19% undecided.

“The anti-Trump Republican is expected to file for the open Senate seat on Friday, the last day of the filing deadline. Hogan is popular in Maryland and his entrance in the race is a huge recruiting coup for Republicans, but taking the spot of retiring Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin will be an uphill battle in a deep-blue state.”
“The top three House Democrats — Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark, and Chair Pete Aguilar — endorsed Rep. David Trone on Monday in the competitive Democratic primary for Maryland’s open Senate seat,” Politico reports.

Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) endorsed Angela Alsobrooks (D) for U.S. Senate in Maryland, WJLA reports.
Playbook: “The former House majority leader, sometimes a kingmaker in Maryland, is a big get for Alsobrooks — and a blow for Rep. David Trone (D), who’s also in the Democratic primary. Might it signal that Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) will choose not to run?”
Said Raskin to Politico: “I’m still thinking about throwing my bandana in the ring.”
“Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) says he’s been ‘bombarded and besieged’ with calls from fellow progressives urging him to run for Senate. But as Raskin mulls whether to seek higher office, his position as the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee is giving him pause,” Punchbowl News reports.
“Does Raskin want to forfeit a chance at being an influential House committee chair to become a freshman senator — and in the minority at that?”
Angela Alsobrooks (D), the executive of Prince George’s County and one of the most prominent Democrats in Maryland politics, will launch her campaign for the Senate this week, Time reports.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) “will spend the rest of the month deciding whether he will run for U.S. Senate, in what is already shaping up to be a crowded primary battle to replace outgoing Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin,” Time reports.
Said Raskin: “After five months of chemo, I am taking the month of May to seriously investigate the 2024 election, the Senate, the House, and the role I can best play in Democratic victory and progress in the country.”
Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) ruled out a 2024 Senate bid Tuesday, The Hill reports.
Rep. David Trone (D-MD) has told associates that he’s prepared to spend $50 million of his own money if he enters Maryland U.S. Senate race, Time reports.
Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) won’t seek reelection in 2024, the Washington Post reports.
“Cardin, 79, has been a fixture in Maryland politics for decades, building a reputation as a serious, reserved legislator who gravitates toward complex policy issues and avoids the kind of show-horse politicking of some of his peers. His retirement is likely to create a highly competitive Democratic primary to replace him.”
“Sen. Ben Cardin is still assessing whether to run for another six-year term in 2024. In the meantime, ambitious fellow Democrats are preparing campaigns that can strike ASAP if the genial Marylander retires,” Politico reports.
Ryan Dark White (R), who is running for U.S. Senate in Maryland under the alias Jon McGreevey, was arrested on charges of making a false report of child trafficking, the Baltimore Sun reports.
White, an employee at an adult bookstore, falsely reported in April that a young girl was being trafficked by a man at the bookstore and forced to perform sex acts on male customers.
“Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) plans to announce that he will not run for the U.S. Senate, rebuffing an aggressive recruitment push from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Republicans who saw the term-limited governor as the GOP’s best chance to win in the deep-blue state,” the AP reports.
“The governor’s decision, while not totally unexpected, marks a setback in the Republican Party’s broader fight to seize the Senate majority this fall. Given his popularity, the 65-year-old Republican, a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump, would have instantly become a legitimate contender against Democratic incumbent Sen. Chris Van Hollen — even in a state Trump lost by 32 percentage points in 2020.”
“Chelsea Manning (D), the transgender former Army private who was convicted of passing sensitive government documents to Wikileaks, has filed to run for the U.S. Senate in Maryland,” the Washington Post reports.
“Manning, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment, would be challenging Democrat Ben Cardin, who has served two terms in the Senate and is up for re-election in November.”
Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), “a seven-term congressman who has risen rapidly through the ranks of the Democratic leadership in Washington, won the party’s nomination for Maryland’s open Senate seat Tuesday,” the Baltimore Sun reports.
“The son of a Baltimore family, Van Hollen ran as a pragmatic deal maker in a time of polarized politics. Though he was supported by many establishment figures — and raised significantly more money than any other candidate — he faced tough opposition from Rep. Donna F. Edwards, who represents a neighboring congressional district in the Washington suburbs.”
Rep. Donna Edwards (D-MD) plans to announce on that she will run for the Senate seat being vacated by Barbara Mikulski (D), the Washington Post reprots, setting up a potentially bruising primary fight with Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD).
Edwards “has drawn early support from national progressive organizations, who helped her oust incumbent Albert Wynn in the 2008 Democratic primary and last week announced a movement to get her to run for Senate. But it remains to be seen whether efforts by groups such as Emily’s List and the Feminist Majority will be enough to offset an early funding advantage held by Van Hollen, a proven fundraiser who has $1.7 million in his campaign account.”
Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) announced that he will run for the seat of retiring Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), “moving swiftly as numerous other ambitious Democrats have their eye on the race,” Roll Call reports.
Said Van Hollen: “I am excited to share that I have decided to run for the United States Senate from our great State of Maryland.”
“The seven-term congressman’s move comes just two days after Mikulski announced she wouldn’t seek another term and with nearly every other member of Maryland’s congressional delegation pondering whether to run for just the second open Senate seat in the last 30 years.”
Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) announced he will not run for retiring Sen. Barbara Mikulski’s (D-MD) Senate seat, CNN reports.
Said O’Malley: “I am hopeful and confident that very capable public servants with a desire to serve in the Senate will step up as candidates for this important office. I will not be one of them.”
