“After months of speculation, former U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer (R) is jumping into the race for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat, launching a campaign Monday for the Republican Party’s nomination,” the Detroit News reports.

“Sen. Todd Young (R-IN) told Republican senators that former Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI) will launch a Michigan Senate campaign this week, citing a conversation he had with a Meijer family member,” Politico reports.

“Young informed colleagues at a Senate GOP lunch Tuesday that he heard Meijer would jump into the race within 48 hours.”

Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig (R) launched a campaign for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat, positioning himself as a “passionate” public servant and Trump-friendly outsider in a field of “establishment” types, the Detroit News reports.

Craig is the second widely known Republican to join the swing-state contest after former Rep. Mike Rogers (R) jumped into the race last month, making for a potentially messy primary contest next year. Rogers was recruited and encouraged by the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Former Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI) has formed an exploratory committee for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat as he weighs formally entering the race, the Detroit News reports.

“Former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, a Republican who served in the U.S. House for seven terms and chaired its intelligence committee, is expected to soon announce a bid for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat,” the AP reports.

“Rogers would become the first prominent Republican in the state to announce a campaign more than eight months after longtime Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow announced that she would retire next year after her fourth term.”

“The vice chair of the New York Stock Exchange is considering a run for Senate in Michigan, where Republicans have been searching for a candidate for retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s seat,” Politico reports.

“Southeast Michigan native John Tuttle is weighing a bid… An alum of Eastern Michigan University, Tuttle served in George W. Bush’s administration before joining the world’s largest stock market in 2007.”

“Tuttle is only in the early stages of exploring a run. But his interest comes as Republicans have so far struggled to field any serious contenders for the seat. Democrats, meanwhile, have united quickly behind Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a strong fundraiser who ousted an incumbent GOP representative in 2018.”

“Slotkin’s Senate run was widely anticipated after Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D) stunned Michigan Democrats last month with her decision not to seek reelection. In recent weeks, Slotkin has had private conversations with Democrats around the state to gauge and build support for her bid. Most prominent Democrats in the state have decided not to run, making Slotkin the early front-runner.”

“Rep. John James (R-MI) filed paperwork Friday to run for reelection to his Detroit-area House seat, opting against a campaign for the Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Debbie Stabenow in 2024,” the AP reports.

“James, a 41-year-old first-term representative and rising star in the party, had been considered one of Republicans’ most promising potential Senate candidates. He ran unsuccessfully for the Senate twice before, losing to Stabenow in 2018 and to Democratic Sen. Gary Peters in 2020.”

“Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Sunday he will not run for the open US Senate seat in Michigan in 2024, in his most direct answer to date ruling out a potential bid,” CNN reports.

Associated Press: “In what is quickly emerging as one of the most closely watched Senate races of the 2024 campaign, Slotkin is aggressively acting on Stabenow’s call for ‘the next generation of leadership.’ The 46-year-old former CIA intelligence officer is taking steps to prepare for a Senate run, including forming a national campaign team.”
