The Importance of Open vs. Closed Primaries

March 9, 2016 at 10:55 am EST By Taegan Goddard 54 Comments

First Read: “One of the big secrets to Trump’s and Sanders’ success last night was the ‘open’ nature of last night’s primaries in Mississippi and Michigan. In Michigan, 31% of the voters were independents, and Trump bested Kasich among them, 36%-27%. And on the Democratic side in Michigan, Clinton won Democrats by a 57%-41% margin, but Sanders won among indies (who made up 28% of the electorate), 71%-28%.”

“Looking ahead to next week’s contests, Florida is a closed primary, while Ohio isn’t as open as Michigan is. Per Ohio’s election law, you declare your political party affiliation by requesting the ballot of a political party in a partisan primary election. If you do not desire to affiliate with a political party in Ohio, you are considered to be an unaffiliated voter. An unaffiliated voter does not vote the ballot of a political party in a primary election. However, an unaffiliated voter may vote the Official Questions & Issues Ballot, if there is one for the voter’s precinct at the election.”

Said Kasich: “Some of the other candidates, if they can’t win their home state, they got to get out, O.K.? If I don’t win my home state, I’ll get out. But you know what? I’m going to win Ohio.”

Ohio, New Mexico Lead as Presidential Bellwethers

June 11, 2015 at 8:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 69 Comments

Kyle Kondik: “The Buckeye State, long recognized as perhaps the nation’s premier presidential swing state, deserves its status. In the 30 presidential elections since 1896, Ohio has correctly picked the winner 28 times.”

“Ohio has company at the top though — it beats out another top presidential swing state, New Mexico, by only a hair. Like Ohio, the Land of Enchantment has also only been incorrect twice, but because statehood arrived in 1912, its record is just 24-2, and thus it has a slightly lower batting average (92%) than Ohio (93%).”

Kasich Signs Bill to Help Himself in Presidential Primary

June 10, 2015 at 1:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 39 Comments

“In a move that strengthens his looming presidential candidacy, Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) signed a GOP-crafted bill today moving back Ohio’s 2016 primary election to make it a winner-take-all contest,” the Columbus Dispatch reports.

“Moving the presidential primary from March 8 to March 15 next year shifts Ohio from awarding its presidential convention delegates proportionally to granting all the delegates to the statewide winner. The change could set the stage for Kasich to sweep of all of Ohio’s GOP delegates. The governor has fared well in home-state polls suggesting he is the leading GOP candidate.”

Ohio Tries to Make Elections More Competitive

December 20, 2014 at 3:07 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 11 Comments

“Of 435 House races in November, only a few dozen were considered competitive — a result of decades of drawing district lines for partisan advantage, generally by state legislatures,” the New York Times reports.

“But in an era of hyperpartisan gerrymandering, which many blame for the polarization of state and national politics, Ohio took a step in the opposite direction last week. With the support of both parties, the Ohio House gave final approval Wednesday to a plan to draw voting districts for the General Assembly using a bipartisan process, intended to make elections more competitive.”
