Trump Congratulates Poland on Anniversary of Invasion

September 3, 2019 at 10:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

When President Trump was asked if he had a message for Poland — which was commemorating the anniversary of the start of World War II — he decided to congratulate the country, the Washington Post reports.

Said Trump: “I do have a great message for Poland. And we have Mike Pence, our Vice President, is just about landing right now. And he is representing me. I look forward to being there soon. But I just want to congratulate Poland. It’s a great country with great people.”

“For those not versed in World War II history, Sunday was the anniversary of the day Nazi Germany invaded Poland, which led France and Great Britain to declare war two days later (i.e. 80 years ago Tuesday). Poland would wind up losing nearly one-fifth of its population in the war, according to estimates.”

Poland’s Supreme Court in Disarray as Judges Defy Purge

July 5, 2018 at 7:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Surrounded by cheering supporters, Poland’s top Supreme Court justice took a defiant stand on the courthouse steps here Wednesday morning, hours after the government purged the tribunal. She vowed to keep fighting to protect the Constitution and the independence of the nation’s courts,” the New York Times reports.

Said Justice Malgorzata Gersdorf: “I’m doing this to defend the rule of law and to testify to the truth about the line between the Constitution and the violation of the Constitution. I hope that legal order will return to Poland.”

Poland Purges Supreme Court

July 4, 2018 at 10:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Poland’s government carried out a sweeping purge of the Supreme Court on Tuesday night, eroding the judiciary’s independence, escalating a confrontation with the European Union over the rule of law and further dividing this nation. Tens of thousands took to the streets in protest,” the New York Times reports.

“Poland was once a beacon for countries struggling to escape the yoke of the Soviet Union and embrace Western democracy. But it is now in league with neighboring nations, like Hungary, whose leaders have turned to authoritarian means to tighten their grip on power, presenting a grave challenge to a European Union already grappling with nationalist, populist and anti-immigrant movements.”

Poland Offers $2 Billion for U.S. Military Base

May 27, 2018 at 8:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Poland wants a permanent U.S. military presence — and is willing to pony up as much as $2 billion to get it,” Politico reports.

“The Polish offer reflects a long-standing desire in Warsaw to build closer security relations with the U.S. and put American boots on the ground. The push dates back to Poland’s entry into NATO in 1999, but has taken on added urgency in the wake of Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region four years ago and aggressive posture toward the alliance.”

Poland Promises Trump a Warm Welcome

July 5, 2017 at 1:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “According to Polish media reports, Poland’s government promised the White House a reception of cheering crowds as part of its invitation. To make good on that pledge, ruling party lawmakers and pro-government activists plan to bus in groups from the provinces to hear Trump’s speech. The White House didn’t respond to a request for comment on those reports.”

BBC: “The ruling party will bus in 50 people per parliamentarian, according to the Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper, guaranteeing a friendly crowd of thousands for President Trump’s speech in Warsaw’s symbolic Krasinski Square on Thursday.”
