Billionaire Governor Received Farm Subsidies

October 19, 2019 at 3:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A farming business owned by the family of West Virginia’s billionaire governor has received $125,000 in soybean and corn subsidies, the maximum allowed from a federal program meant to help American farmers through the U.S. trade war with China,” the AP reports.

“There is no evidence Gov. Jim Justice did anything illegal. But at least one analyst said the payments to the richest man in West Virginia are unseemly, given his wealth. And the subsidies have thrown the spotlight again on his business empire and the potential conflicts of interest it poses.”

Can a Governor Be Forced to Live In the State Capital?

August 21, 2019 at 3:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A persistent lawsuit seeking to do just that with West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice (R) was back in a courtroom Wednesday,” NBC News reports.

“The Republican billionaire has frequently been criticized by members of both major parties for being absent from the Charleston statehouse as his business empire of more than 100 companies bogs down in litigation.”

“But perhaps the most forceful condemnation has come from a Democratic lawmaker whose lawsuits have accused Justice of violating a passage of the state Constitution that says the governor ‘shall reside at the seat of government.'”

West Virginia Still Waiting on Promised China Investment

June 21, 2019 at 8:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s 2017 trip to China included a signing ceremony in the colossal Great Hall of the People to unveil business deals totaling more than $250 billion,” CNBC reports.

“One-third of that value was supposed to flow to West Virginia, an energy-rich but high-poverty state whose manufacturing and energy workers handed Trump his widest margin of victory in 2016.”

“Eighteen months after the deal was announced with much fanfare, China Energy Investment Corp. has spent no money in West Virginia’s energy projects.”

West Virginia House Votes to Impeach Supreme Court

August 14, 2018 at 7:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The West Virginia House of Delegates voted late Monday night to impeach all of the justices on the Supreme Court, a decision prompted initially by reports of extravagant spending on office renovations,” the New York Times reports.

“In a series of votes that frequently fell along rough party lines, lawmakers approved 11 articles of impeachment against the four sitting justices, sending the process on to the State Senate.”

Charleston Gazette-Mail: “Throughout debate on the articles, leaders in the Republican-majority House said they would work through midnight to finish the work amid arguments from House Democrats that the presentation of the articles was done in a way that would allow Republican Gov. Jim Justice to appoint four justices on the five-member court for the next two years.”

Trump May Win West Virginia But Lose Delegates

April 16, 2016 at 8:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 20 Comments

Politico: “Trump is well-positioned for a resounding victory in West Virginia’s May 10 primary, but his win will be accompanied by a delegate selection process stacked in favor of people with last names at the beginning of the alphabet — rather than his most committed supporters.”

“It’s a quirk of West Virginia’s mind-bogglingly complex delegate election process that has the Trump campaign on red alert and seems likely to leave the mogul with weaker support at the national convention than he’s expected to earn in the state’s primary. It’s yet another convoluted primary system likely to add fuel to Trump’s complaints that the rules of the Republican nomination process are rigged.”

Lawmakers Get Sick After Legalizing Raw Milk

March 9, 2016 at 12:32 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 94 Comments

“In the weeks after passing a bill, allowing West Virginians to drink raw milk, one delegate brought the drink in to celebrate and, eventually, several lawmakers have gotten sick,” WSAZ reports.

“Some lawmakers say it’s just a coincidence and a stomach bug is going around. But, now, health officials are planning on looking in to how this all started.”
