January 14, 2019 at 10:55 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s nominee for attorney general will tell senators at his confirmation hearing “it is vitally important” that special counsel Robert Mueller be allowed to complete his Russia investigation, the AP reports.

Barr will say: “I believe it is in the best interest of everyone — the President, Congress, and, most importantly, the American people – that this matter be resolved by allowing the Special Counsel to complete his work.”

According to CNN, Barr will also say that Congress and the public should be “be informed of the results of the special counsel’s work.”

Barr’s Confirmation Hearing Will Be About Mueller’s Future

January 13, 2019 at 9:35 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Two years of simmering tension between the White House, the Justice Department and Congress will culminate in Tuesday’s confirmation hearing of William Barr to be the next attorney general, where he is expected to resist Democrats’ demands for explicit promises about the fate of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into President Trump.”

“As the Trump administration enters its third year, Barr is poised to inherit a political powder keg in the Mueller probe, which seeks to determine if any Trump associates conspired with the Kremlin to interfere in the 2016 election, and whether the president tried to obstruct that investigation.”

Rosenstein Expected to Leave Justice Department

January 9, 2019 at 5:47 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is expected to leave his role in the coming weeks, multiple sources familiar with his plans told ABC News.

“Rosenstein has communicated to President Trump and White House officials his plan to depart the administration around the time William Barr, Trump’s nominee for attorney general, would take office following a Senate confirmation.”

“Rosenstein apparently had long been thinking he would serve about two years, and there was no indication that he was being forced out at this moment by the president.”

Barr Criticized Mueller Probe In Memo to Justice Dept

December 20, 2018 at 7:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“William Barr, President Trump’s choice for attorney general, sent an unsolicited memo earlier this year to the Justice Department that excoriated special counsel Robert Mueller’s inquiry into potential obstruction of justice by Mr. Trump, saying it is based on a ‘fatally misconceived’ theory that would cause lasting damage to the presidency and the executive branch,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The 20-page document… provides the first in-depth look at Mr. Barr’s views on the special counsel’s Russia investigation, which he would likely oversee if confirmed.”

Barr Has Given More Than $500K In Political Donations

December 12, 2018 at 7:24 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump has” repeatedly derided prosecutors investigating potential coordination between his presidential campaign and Russia as ‘angry Democrats,’ pointing to their past political donations as proof of bias,” the Washington Post reports.

“But William P. Barr, Trump’s nominee to lead the Justice Departmentand oversee the Russia investigation, would be by far the most prolific political donor to step into the country’s top law enforcement post in at least a quarter-century.”

“Barr has donated more than $567,000 in the past two decades, nearly all to GOP candidates and groups, federal records show. His wife, Christine Barr, gave more than $220,000 over that time, records show. Before he was nominated to be attorney general, Barr criticized past donations by prosecutors working for special counsel Robert Mueller.”

William Barr Is Leading Attorney General Candidate

December 6, 2018 at 1:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former attorney general William Barr is President Trump’s leading candidate to be nominated to lead the Justice Department — “a choice that could be made in coming days as the agency presses forward with a probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election,” the Washington Post reports.

“One person familiar with the discussions cautioned that while Barr is the leading candidate, the decision is not final and the president could decide to pick someone else.”
