Weld Says Trump Is a ‘Raging Racist’

July 25, 2019 at 9:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld (R) called President Trump a “raging racist” at the NAACP convention in Detroit.

Said Weld: “Donald Trump is a raging racist, Okay? He’s a complete and thoroughgoing racist. And he made that choice, a choice a long time ago, when he was engaged in the housing business in New York with his father.”

He added: “The national Republican Party, has a choice. And a lot of them like to think that it’s a political choice. But it’s not a political choice. It’s a moral choice. Unless the Republican Party in Washington expressly, expressly rejects the racism of Donald Trump, they’re going to come to be universally viewed as the party of racism in America.”

Former Gov. Bill Weld (R) “announced his presidential exploratory bid last month with a flourish, capturing headlines by calling Donald Trump ‘a schoolyard bully’ and dismissing Washington Republicans for exhibiting ‘all the symptoms of Stockholm syndrome,’” Politico reports.

“Then he went dark. Aside from a few television hits and public appearances, the former Massachusetts governor has done little to suggest his primary election challenge to Trump is something the president needs to worry about.”

Weld May Challenge Trump In Primary

February 1, 2019 at 7:08 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Gov. William Weld, who was the Libertarian Party’s nominee for vice president in 2016, is mulling a run for president and could make an announcement about a possible presidential run in the next few weeks, WCVB reports.

He would run as a Republican. The news makes Weld the first who could create a primary challenge for President Donald Trump in 2020.

Matt Lewis: “Weld may be the ice-breaker, but he’s a perennial candidate whose fealty to the Republican Party is suspect, having defended Hillary Clinton while running as the Libertarian Party V.P. candidate in 2016. His value will likely be making it easier for others to take the primary plunge.”

Libertarian vice presidential candidate William Weld told the Boston Globe “that he plans to focus exclusively on blasting Donald Trump over the next five weeks, a strategic pivot aimed at denying Trump the White House and giving himself a key role in helping to rebuild the GOP.”

“Weld’s comments in a Globe interview mark a major shift in his mission since he pledged at the Libertarian convention in May that he would remain a Libertarian for life and would do all he could to help elect his running mate, Gary Johnson, the former Republican governor of New Mexico.”

Weld Doesn’t Excite Libertarians

May 29, 2016 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 14 Comments

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson “has been on the receiving end of attacks for his vice presidential pick, former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld,” CNN reports.

“Weld, a former Republican from a blue state, has had a difficult time pitching himself to the Libertarian convention. Many have been skeptical over Weld’s libertarian credentials, especially his record on gun control and support for Republican politicians. Prior to teaming up with Johnson, Weld had endorsed Republican Ohio Gov. John Kasich for President.”
