May 3, 2023 at 7:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Mass killings are happening with staggering frequency this year: an average of about one a week.”

“The 2023 numbers stand out even more when they are compared with the tally for full-year totals since data was collected. The U.S. recorded 30 or fewer mass killings in more than half of the years in the database, so to be at 19 a third of the way through is remarkable.”

FBI Fights to Protect Surveillance Program

April 24, 2023 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “While both FBI and Justice Department leadership typically make a personal pitch to Congress for an extension of the program known as Section 702, the deepening chasm between House Republicans and top law enforcement officials has complicated that dynamic. In short, the House GOP doesn’t trust the bureau.”

“And it means the FBI’s typical entreaty — that keeping its powers intact is essential to national security — won’t carry much weight this time around.”

“On Friday, more than two years later, McCaughey was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison for his role in the riot and attempt by supporters of Donald Trump to prevent the transfer of power to Joe Biden. His sentence is among the lengthiest handed down to Jan. 6 rioters so far, though it was less than half of the nearly 16 years that the Justice Department sought.”
