Obama Secures Votes Needed for Iran Deal

September 2, 2015 at 10:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 81 Comments

President Obama “locked in enough support in Congress Wednesday to ensure he can overcome bipartisan opposition and implement a landmark nuclear accord with Iran,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“More than a month after global diplomats struck an agreement limiting Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief, the White House secured the backing of 34 Senate Democrats–the minimum needed to guarantee the deal can advance despite reservations in Congress. Even if Congress passes a resolution disapproving the deal later this month, Mr. Obama is expected to veto the resolution. Support from Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D., Md.) means there won’t be enough votes to override that veto.”

Obama Close to Major Diplomatic Victory

September 1, 2015 at 5:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 37 Comments

Sens. Chris Coons (D-DE) and Bob Casey (D-PA) “have decided to support the Iran nuclear deal, putting President Obama on the brink of a major diplomatic breakthrough that will allow him to fully implement the controversial deal over the objections of the Republican-led Congress,” the Washington Post reports.

“Coons’s decision… delivered a powerful blow to opponents of the plan because the Delaware Democrat had previously voiced some of the deepest skepticism about the controversial deal. It came as Casey announced support for the deal and left Obama needing just one more vote in the Senate to claim victory.”

Trump Plans Iran Deal Protest with Cruz

August 27, 2015 at 4:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 38 Comments

Donald Trump revealed that “he’s been coordinating with Ted Cruz for a joint appearance at an event opposing the Iran deal in Washington,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Trump: “We are talking to Ted Cruz, who is a friend of mine and a good guy, about doing something very big over the next two weeks in Washington. It’s essentially a protest against the totally incompetent deal that we’re making with Iran.”

Reid Will Back Iran Deal

August 24, 2015 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 9 Comments

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) told the Washington Post that he will support President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, ending speculation that he was waffling on the agreement.

Said Reid: “This is the best way, the only way, to keep Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.”

Congress Unlikely to Override Veto on Iran Nuclear Deal

August 20, 2015 at 12:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 37 Comments

“Congress is unlikely to override a promised veto by President Obama if both chambers reject a deal to curtail Iran’s nuclear capabilities, according to a Washington Post analysis of where the votes currently stand. When both chambers return from the August recess, all 246 House Republicans are expected to vote against the deal, the analysis found. So far, 12 House Democrats have declared they too are opposed — more than enough to pass a resolution of disapproval through the lower chamber.”

Gridlock May Hand Obama Victory on Iran Deal

August 18, 2015 at 12:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 41 Comments

New York Times: “Partisanship has become the pre-eminent scapegoat for American political failure, an all-purpose explanation for Washington’s inability to act. Yet in rare circumstances, it can actually guarantee action. So, notwithstanding an acrimonious debate, polarization makes the United States’ acceptance of the Iran nuclear deal very likely.”

“That is because the mechanism for congressional consideration, agreed on by Republican leaders and the White House, reverses the typical legislative imperative. Instead of requiring an extraordinary majority to act, it requires one to stop action — which means partisanship is all President Obama needs to approve the deal.”

Mexicans Start to Worry About Trump

August 18, 2015 at 12:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 92 Comments

Washington Post: “The longer he floats atop the polls, the more Donald Trump has started to make people here feel a bit queasy, forcing them to contemplate whether his candidacy is really something they need to worry about. As Trump published his immigration proposals this week, Mexicans expressed growing concern about his bid for the Republican nomination.”

“The Mexican government has tried mostly to stay above the fray. Over the past few months, Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Meade and other top officials have gone on record with their displeasure about Trump’s comments. But they’ve also chosen not to engage Trump’s near-daily anti-Mexico barrages, in part because the candidate’s proposals change so often and also because officials don’t expect he’ll be president.”

GOP Candidates Remain Vague on Using Power Abroad

August 15, 2015 at 9:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 10 Comments

“If the diverse group of candidates competing for the Republican presidential nomination agree on one thing when describing how they would engage with the world if they made it to the White House, it is this: If only the United States were stronger, and more feared, the country would not feel threatened by the Islamic State, manipulated by Iran or challenged by a rising China,” the New York Times reports.

“But after that, finding any consensus on how they would exercise American power differently from President Obama, or a Democratic opponent in 2016, much less how they would define an alternative Republican foreign policy, gets a bit messy.”

U.S. Flag Raised Over Embassy in Cuba

August 14, 2015 at 10:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 55 Comments

“The three retired U.S. marines who lowered the flag at the American embassy in Havana in 1961 helped raise the Stars and Stripes once again Friday at the seven-story building alongside Havana’s seaside Malecon boulevard,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The U.S. and Cuba officially restored diplomatic ties last month, and the U.S. embassy in Havana opened then. But Friday’s flag raising marks the symbolic start of a new chapter in the two nation’s relations, with flags now flying once again in both countries after 54 years.”

Mexico Won’t Pay for Trump’s Wall

August 13, 2015 at 9:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 34 Comments

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto’s administration said there’s no truth to Donald Trump’s assertion that the nation would pay for a wall along the border between the countries, Bloomberg reports.

Said a spokesman: “Of course it’s false. It reflects an enormous ignorance for what Mexico represents, and also the irresponsibility of the candidate who’s saying it.”

Obama Leaked Schumer Decision on Iran

August 7, 2015 at 2:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 67 Comments

“The White House lit into Sen. Chuck Schumer on Friday for his decision to vote no on the Iran deal and suggested that he’s put his clear path to be the next Democratic leader in doubt,” Politico reports.

“And a person familiar with Schumer’s decision said the senator’s allies blame the White House for leaking news from a private call Schumer made to President Barack Obama on Thursday afternoon and breaking a direct request the senator made to the president to give him until Friday to put word out about his decision. The person also noted, with more than a little acidity, that Obama was the only person Schumer told of his decision before the news started to leak out.”

Schumer Announces Opposition to Iran Deal

August 7, 2015 at 5:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 151 Comments

During the middle of the GOP presidential debate last night, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), “the most influential Jewish voice in Congress, said that he would oppose President Obama’s deal to limit Iran’s nuclear program,” the New York Times reports.

“His announcement comes as Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the minority leader, labors to build a firewall in the House in support of the deal, which has been denounced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel. At six meetings in recent weeks, Ms. Pelosi has assembled an informal team of Democrats determined to win over the 146 House Democrats needed to uphold a veto.”

Obama Says Choice Is Between Diplomacy and War

August 5, 2015 at 2:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 19 Comments

President Obama “delivered a detailed broadside to opponents of his crowning foreign-policy achievement, arguing that the diplomatic agreement to restrict Iran’s nuclear program presents Congress with a fundamental choice between war and peace,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Mr. Obama, in a speech at American University where President John F. Kennedy made a case for confronting nuclear threats with diplomacy, said that whether lawmakers approve or reject the Iran deal next month will determine the future of America, which is still recovering from more than a decade of war in the Middle East.”

Chuck Schumer Seen as Leaning Against Iran Deal

August 3, 2015 at 1:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 42 Comments

Politico: “People who have spoken with the senior New York senator believe the pressure campaign is having an effect: They say there is a growing sense inside and outside the Capitol that Schumer will vote against the deal when the Senate considers it in September. The bigger question many have now is this: How hard will he push against it?”

“Schumer is one of about 15 Democratic senators who will decide the fate of President Barack Obama’s Iran nuclear deal in Congress. The president can afford to lose no more than a dozen Democrats on the Senate floor, and as the next Democratic leader, Schumer may be the most critical of them all.”

Iran Hearings Show GOP Not Fit to Lead

August 1, 2015 at 12:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 28 Comments

William Saletan: “If Republicans win the White House next year, they’ll almost certainly control the entire federal government. Many of them, running for president or aspiring to leadership roles in Congress, are trying to block the nuclear deal with Iran. This would be a good time for these leaders to show that they’re ready for the responsibilities of national security and foreign policy. Instead, they’re showing the opposite. Over the past several days, congressional hearings on the deal have become a spectacle of dishonesty, incomprehension, and inability to cope with the challenges of a multilateral world.”

Cruz Calls Obama a Sponsor of Terrorism

July 30, 2015 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 47 Comments

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said that President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran is essentially financing terrorism and didn’t back down after the president called his comments “outrageous,” Politico reports.

Said Cruz: “If this deal is consummated, it will make the Obama administration the world’s leading financier of radical Islamic terrorism. Billions of dollars under control of this administration will flow into the hands of jihadists who will use that money to murder Americans, to murder Israelis, to murder Europeans.”

Taliban Leader Is Dead

July 29, 2015 at 9:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 15 Comments

“Mullah Mohammad Omar, the spiritual leader of the Taliban, is dead, according to three Afghan officials and two people close to the Taliban,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“His death, if confirmed, raises questions about who will lead the movement that allied with al Qaeda, fought a war with the U.S. and is now divided over whether to pursue an elusive peace deal with Afghanistan’s new government.”
