Clinton’s Gun Ad Ran Just Six Times

December 10, 2015 at 9:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard 7 Comments

“When Hillary Clinton’s campaign unveiled a stark campaign ad in early November urging a change in gun control laws, the move was seen as unusually bold for a candidate who has been criticized in the past for being overly cautious. The ad would be put into the rotation of her existing television reservations in Iowa and New Hampshire,” the New York Times reports.

“It was true that it went into the rotation, but the spot was broadcast on local television only six times, according to data provided by the Campaign Media Analysis Group: It ran four times in four separate Iowa media markets, and two times in two separate New Hampshire markets, Boston and Manchester. Five of those instances were on Nov. 4, a day after the spot aired.”

Supreme Court Rejects Challenge to Assault Weapon Ban

December 7, 2015 at 9:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard 32 Comments

“The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday turned away a challenge by gun rights activists to an ordinance enacted by a Chicago suburb that bans assault weapons and large-capacity magazines,” Reuters reports.

“The refusal by the nine justices to hear the case, coming at a time of fierce debate over the nation’s gun laws following a series of mass shootings, means that the 2013 ordinance passed by the city of Highland Park, Illinois remains in effect.”

University Wants Students to Carry Weapons

December 5, 2015 at 2:48 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 63 Comments

Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. urged students to carry concealed weapons on campus in the wake of  the San Bernardino massacre, the News and Advance reports.

Said Falwell: “It just blows my mind when I see that the President of the United States says that the answer to circumstances like that is more gun control… I’ve always thought if more good people had concealed carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they walked in.”

He added: “Let’s teach them a lesson if they ever show up here.”

NYT Leads with Editorial on Gun Control

December 5, 2015 at 8:55 am EST By Taegan Goddard 23 Comments

The New York Times ran an editorial on its front page for the first time since 1920 urging lawmakers to tighten gun control regulations.

“It is a moral outrage and a national disgrace that civilians can legally purchase weapons designed specifically to kill people with brutal speed and efficiency. These are weapons of war, barely modified and deliberately marketed as tools of macho vigilantism and even insurrection. America’s elected leaders offer prayers for gun victims and then, callously and without fear of consequence, reject the most basic restrictions on weapons of mass killing, as they did on Thursday.”

“I don’t hear anybody talking about bomb control. They put bombs and left bombs behind on the scene of attack, intending to kill even more people than they did with guns.”

— Sen. Marco Rubio, in an interview with Fox News.

Lawmaker Seeks Same Gun Rules as Abortion

December 4, 2015 at 10:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard 13 Comments

Missouri state Rep. Stacey Newman (D) has introduced a bill to apply “the restrictions placed on women seeking abortion services to all prospective firearm purchasers, such as a requirement that anyone buying a gun first watch a 30-minute video on fatal firearm injuries,” St. Louis Magazine reports.

Said Newman: “Since Missouri holds the rank as one of the strictest abortion regulation states in the country, it is logical we borrow similar restrictions to lower our horrific gun violence rates.”

Gun Measures Fail Again in the Senate

December 4, 2015 at 8:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard 17 Comments

“One day after the deadliest U.S. mass shooting in nearly three years, the Senate voted down a pair of gun-control measures that were designed by Democrats to put Republicans on record on the charged issue,” Politico reports.

Reid Calls NRA the ‘Quasi-Militant Wing’ of the GOP

December 3, 2015 at 2:24 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 59 Comments

After yet another mass shooting, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) called the NRA the “quasi-militant wing of the Republican Party,” Politico reports.

Said Reid: “Those who choose to do the NRA’s bidding will be held accountable by our constituents. Something has to be done. We must take a stand. The American people are desperately looking for help, some help, any help. It will never be possible to prevent every shooting. We know that. But we have a responsibility to try. There are certain things we can do.”

Our Political System Has Failed on Gun Violence

December 3, 2015 at 8:37 am EST By Taegan Goddard 83 Comments

Rick Klein: “Are the responses just timed Tweets at this point, tweaked with a new detail or two? From one side of the aisle, ‘thoughts and prayers’ and a call for a focus on mental health. From the other, ‘this must change’ and a push for gun control, of course. The nation looks to politicians for guidance and help in understanding, if not fixing, tragic circumstances. On this count, when it comes to mass shootings and their aftermath, the political class has failed.”

“If anything, the responses we’ve come to expect now only add to a nation’s numbness. But the simple fact is that politicians and candidates aren’t feeling voter pressure to change their responses or their policy positions. Part of the ritual now is the numbness, followed by the forgetfulness.”

Obama Renews Call for Expanded Background Checks

December 2, 2015 at 7:27 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 34 Comments

After yet another mass shooting, President Obama told CBS News that lawmakers “should come together in a bipartisan basis at every level of government to make these rare as opposed to normal.”

Said Obama: “For those who are concerned about terrorism, some may be aware of the fact that we have a no-fly list where people can’t get on planes, but those same people who we don’t allow to fly could go into a store right now in the United States and buy a firearm, and there’s nothing we can do to stop them. That’s a law that needs to be changed.”

GOP Candidates Nearly Silent on Colorado Shootings

November 29, 2015 at 8:20 am EST By Taegan Goddard 47 Comments

“The Republican presidential field, which for much of the year has been full-throated in its denunciations of Planned Parenthood, has been nearly silent about the shooting in Colorado at one of its facilities that left a police officer and two others dead,” the Washington Post reports.

“In contrast, all three of the leading Democratic contenders quickly issued statements in support of Planned Parenthood.”

Yahoo News: “The shooting at Planned Parenthood put GOP 2016 hopefuls in a ‘politically uncomfortable’ position.”

Quote of the Day

November 28, 2015 at 10:59 am EST By Taegan Goddard 49 Comments

“This is not normal. We can’t let it become normal. If we truly care about this — if we’re going to offer up our thoughts and prayers again, for God knows how many times, with a truly clean conscience — then we have to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them. Period. Enough is enough.”

— President Obama, quoted by Politico, after yet another mass shooting.

Police Chief More Concerned with Guns Than Refugees

November 22, 2015 at 12:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 23 Comments

New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton called on Congress to “help us out with that Terrorist Watch List, those thousands of people that can purchase firearms in this country,” saying he’s “more worried about them than I am about Syrian refugees, to be quite frank with you,” NBC News reports.

Brown Says Most Terrorists are White Males

November 19, 2015 at 1:31 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 45 Comments

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) told WAKR that most terrorist attacks in the United States since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks have been committed by “generally white males.”

Said Brown: “Since the beginning of the Bush administration when we were attacked, September 11th, we’ve not had any major terrorist attacks in this country. We’ve had individual crazy people, of normally, they look more like me than they look like Middle Easterners. They are generally white males, who have shot up people in movie theaters and schools. Those are terrorist attacks, they’re just different kinds of terrorists.”

GOP Lawmaker Warns Refugees Could Buy Guns

November 17, 2015 at 2:22 pm EST By Taegan Goddard 53 Comments

Texas state Rep. Tony Dale (R) said we cannot allow Syrian refugees into the country because it’s too easy for them to buy guns, Fox 7 Austin reports.

Wrote Dale to Gov. Greg Abbott (R): “While the Paris attackers used suicide vests and grenades, it is clear that firearms also killed a large number of innocent victims. Can you imagine a scenario were [sic] a refugee [sic] is admitted to the United States, is provided with federal cash payments and other assistance, obtains a drivers license and purchases a weapon and executes an attack?”

Trump Says Gun Control Enabled Paris Attacks

November 16, 2015 at 9:13 am EST By Taegan Goddard 37 Comments

Donald Trump said the ISIS terrorist attack in Paris might not have happened if French laws allowed for more people to carry guns, Bloomberg reports.

Said Trump: “The toughest gun laws in the world: Paris. If they were allowed to carry — it would have been a much, much different situation.”

Politico: “After being relatively quiet over the weekend, Trump hit the talk shows on Monday morning to speak about the attacks, saying the U.S. needs stronger intelligence and also linking the high death toll to what he views as excessive gun controls.”

Cuomo Will Lead National Gun Control Push

October 30, 2015 at 7:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 14 Comments

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) “intends to take a lead role in a broad campaign pressing for a crackdown on the improper dealing of firearms, swerving into national politics on an issue that has caused him some political heartburn in New York but has become a defining subject of the 2016 presidential campaign,” the New York Tiems reports.
