GOP Lawmaker Warns Refugees Could Buy Guns

Texas state Rep. Tony Dale (R) said we cannot allow Syrian refugees into the country because it’s too easy for them to buy guns, Fox 7 Austin reports.

Wrote Dale to Gov. Greg Abbott (R): “While the Paris attackers used suicide vests and grenades, it is clear that firearms also killed a large number of innocent victims. Can you imagine a scenario were [sic] a refugee [sic] is admitted to the United States, is provided with federal cash payments and other assistance, obtains a drivers license and purchases a weapon and executes an attack?”

Sounds like an argument for stricter gun-control…

    • nycguy

Except a skin check in place of a background check.

    • gnatswatting

Al-Qaeda stands side by side with the NRA in favor of the broadest use of the 2nd Amendment.

      • Hagar32Grady

Huzzah , Ruff ruff ruff …. damn if he doesn’t look like my Second Lieutenant…… except for the face fuzz 😉

        • gnatswatting

Adam Gadahn was taken out by an American drone in Pakistan last January. Presumably your second lieutenant is still around. 😉

40 years ago…..I do not keep in touch ‘-)

  • littlejohn

Seriously? It’s too easy for Syrian refugees (mostly women and children) to get guns, but not too easy for the mentally ill?

  • chisholm

File this under the Law of Unintended Consequences:

How odd is it that the Paris massacre is underscoring the absurdity of American gun laws, and Republican selective outrage when it comes to who is pulling the trigger, and why?

American gun massacre: Don’t take our guns!
French gun massacre: Close the borders to this horror!

    • ArkonaRus

I wonder what Joe the Plumber has to say about all this, after he said in the past, ‘your dead kids aren’t worth taking away my guns’. Or something to that effect.

  • Silent_Partner

Lmao. Cool for crazy white dude to get one and kill some people, then shit just happens. But let’s do something about refugees getting some guns. These people are too much.

  • TracyS711

Why is he so afraid? Surely the good guys with guns will protect them.

    • embo66

Especially in Texas. They tote ’em to the Walmart down there.

      • ArkonaRus

The old teabaggers in hover rounds will step on their tippy toes first..

  • Grytpype-Thynne

The wrong kind of person might get a gun and massacre a kindergarten, will someone stop this insanity????

    • chisholm

Seriously! WTF! A terrorist mowing down people on the street is an outrage, but a home-grown maniac mowing down a kindergarten is “oh well, cost of freedom”? Republicans are the problem!

  • nycguy

With just the idea that the “wrong” people can get guns, it’s suddenly a problem.

  • jf

Beyond his obvious illiteracy, he seems just as concerned that these unwelcome guests may be receiving government assistance and procuring driver’s licenses, as he is that they might take advantage of our non-existent gun restrictions and join the patriots who have multiple guns at their disposal.

  • LordDart

Whatsa matter, Tony? Someone threatening to primary you unless you keep out all the “furr-iners”?

  • Can you make this up? Could Spielberg come close to making this stuff up? No, you could not make this up.

  • jon_downfromthetrees

Refugees could get guns? Just like any old Texan sociopath? Oh, the horror!

  • Hagar32Grady

Only in America would you have a State like Texas, with such astute representation.

    • montag

I wish Perry would have made good on his threat to have Texas secede. We’d all be better off.

  • spine

And I thought Louis Gohmert is stupid, but Tony Dale . . . that is a 10 on the Perry scale for infinite idiocy.

    • Hagar32Grady

      Let him go……He is on a roll ! 😉

    • ArkonaRus

His name kind of gave it away, though ;).

  • O_day

Wait, I thought the Pubs were big time gun buyers? Did they check with the NRA on this new position? LOL

  • None of their cowardly arguments explain why a terrorist who could pass a background check would submit to the refugee program instead of booking a flight.

  • oldhandatthis

Didn’t Trump just say there wouldn’t be a refugee problem if those people had guns? I guess Tony Dale thinks Trump has it all wrong.

BTW…There is a story in the Washington Post pointing out it is legal for people on the FBI terrorist watch list to buy guns and explosives in the USA. I’d like to hear Republicans debate that next time.

    • Calbengoshi

Personally, I would love to see Scalia tying himself in knots trying to justify holding that a US citizen on the terrorist watch list who never has been convicted of any crime can be precluded from purchasing a gun despite the history of erroneous information used to compile the watch list and the language of the majority opinion that Scalia authored in District of Columbia v. Heller. Or, for that matter, seeing Ted Cruz trying to argue that the reasoning of the amicus brief he helped author in the same case wouldn’t lead to the conclusion that an unconvicted US citizen on the terrorist watch list has a constitutional right to purchase and possess a firearm.

      • oldhandatthis

Yes, the topic promises hours of entertainment I expect most Republicans will seem like dogs chasing their tails as they talk in circles until they decide to blame Obama.

  • abctefg

    Freedumb!

  • fgtayl01

We allow twice as many Iraqi refugees than Syrians. Have for years. Not a terrorist in the group.
But they’re only concerned about Syrians.

  • fgtayl01

Nobody on a terrorist watch list can get refugee status. They’d get picked up.
Anyone not on a terrorist watch list could just get a visa, fly in and buy guns.

Why on earth would a terrorist apply for the refugee program with it’s interviews and checks and waiting period and red tape and uncertainly of being selected

when they could just get a visa and fly in?

  • Laura616

Yes of course, they can do that with their eyes closed standing on their heads while navigating the nightmare of bureaucracy and settlement process. They can find out which bus will take them to the nearest gun store – no problem.

  • Calbengoshi

I wonder if State Rep. Dale knows the meaning of the word “irony.”

  • The Pro from Dover

Looks like Dale just kissed his “donations” from the NRA goodbye.
Apparently Dale has developed quite a resistance to the pain that is caused when his head is slammed with multiple rake handles.

  • lostintheswamp

surely, an attack in texas couldn’t happen, what with all those good guys with guns ….

  • sosuume

    D’oh!

  • Yes, ‘the right of the people’ includes all people, not just white southern Republicans.

  • You know, he’s right. In fact, we can’t let anyone into the country for that very reason–it’s just not safe. Everybody out, now! Last person out, please turn out the lights in the gun store.
