Turmoil at CBS News Over Mick Mulvaney’s Hiring

March 30, 2022 at 3:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“CBS News’s decision to hire former Trump administration official Mick Mulvaney as a paid on-air contributor is drawing backlash within the company because of his history of bashing the press and promoting the former president’s fact-free claims,” the Washington Post reports.

“But a top network executive seemed to lay the groundwork for the decision in a staff meeting earlier this month, when he said the network needed to hire more Republicans to prepare for a ‘likely’ Democratic midterm wipeout.”

The Right’s Go-To Video Site

March 28, 2022 at 2:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Conservative video site, Rumble, now draws 44 million monthly visitors, “giving it a larger reach than other top destinations for conservative content, including Breitbart, Newsmax and The Daily Wire,” the New York Times reports.

“The story of Rumble’s success is instructive for both sides of the tense debate over balancing the right to free speech with the growing threat that disinformation poses to the stability of governments around the globe. For those who argue that Google and Facebook algorithms are blunt, deeply flawed instruments for policing discourse, Rumble offers a welcome alternative, albeit an imperfect one. And for those who fear that lawmakers and technology companies aren’t doing enough to tame false and fabricated information ahead of the next presidential election, Rumble has opened up a potentially dangerous loophole.”

Quote of the Day

March 27, 2022 at 7:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I’m fine with opinion: conservative opinion, liberal opinion. But when people start to question the truth — Who won the 2020 election? Was Jan. 6 an insurrection? — I found that unsustainable.”

— Chris Wallace, quoted by the New York Times, on why he left Fox News.

The Rise of the Tucker Carlson Politician

March 22, 2022 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jason Zengerle: “It makes sense that Masters and Vance would subscribe to national conservatism. Their former boss and patron, Thiel — who has donated millions to super PACs supporting each candidacy — is a NatCon, giving the keynote address at last year’s conference. And they come by the ideology honestly. They are products of elite institutions — Vance graduated from Yale Law School, Masters from Stanford Law — and claim to have been radicalized by the experience. Their populism is a form of contrarianism and rebellion.”

“The challenge is turning that choice into votes. Trump created a constituency on instinct, but thus far there has been no way for politicians to signal affinity with it apart from pledging personal allegiance to Trump. Now that NatCons are trying to solidify that constituency ideologically, it seems freshly possible to align instead with Carlson, whose lead Masters and Vance have followed on everything from opposing vaccine mandates to sympathizing with Vladimir Putin’s geopolitical worldview.”

YouTube Yanks Podcast With Trump

March 11, 2022 at 11:23 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

YouTube has removed a podcast episode featuring Donald Trump because it contained content that “advances claims that widespread fraud, errors or glitches changed the outcome of the U.S. 2020 presidential election,” The Wrap reports.

Trump ripped the decision in a statement: “In the 24 hours that it was up it set every record for them, by many times. Interestingly on the show I told them this would happen because Big Tech and the Fake News Media fear the truth, they fear criticism about Biden, and above all, they don’t want to talk about the Rigged 2020 Presidential Election, all topics discussed.”

It’s Not a War on Russian Television

March 8, 2022 at 8:49 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “To spend several days watching news broadcasts on the main state channels, as well as surveying state-controlled newspapers, is to witness the extent of the Kremlin’s efforts to sanitize its war with the Orwellian term ‘special military operation’ — and to make all news coverage align with that message.”

“Words like ‘war’ or ‘invasion’ to describe the actions of the Russian military are forbidden under a new law that President Putin signed on Friday. The law mandates up to 15 years in prison for any coverage the state deems ‘false information’ about the military campaign.”
