Hogan Approval Hits New High in Maryland
A new Washington Post-University of Maryland poll finds Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) is deeply popular nine months after taking office, earning high marks from residents who describe him as a “different kind of Republican” and who have watched him battle cancer.
“Hogan’s 61% approval rating — up from 42% in February — extends across partisan and demographic lines in a state where registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans more than 2 to 1. He is viewed more favorably than either the Democratic Party or the Republican Party, and is presiding over a state that is riding a wave of increased optimism. For the first time since 2007, a majority of residents say things in Maryland are headed in the right direction.”

A new Winthrop poll in South Carolina finds Gov. Nikki Haley (R) approval rating unchanged at 55% after removing the Confederate flag from the state capitol grounds.
“But the potential vice presidential pick lost some backing from fellow S.C. Republicans. Haley received a thumbs up from 68% of Republicans in the latest poll, but that was down from 78% from February.”
First Read: “That means she’s getting more support from Democrats and independents – but less support from Republicans. Interesting — especially for whomever the eventual GOP nominee is as they begin their search for a running mate.”
Indiana Lawmaker Resigns Over Sex Video
Indiana state Rep. Jud McMillin (R) “has resigned unexpectedly from the Indiana House — where he is in the second-highest elected leadership position — after sources say at least one sexually explicit video was discovered on his phone,” the Indiana Business Journal reports.
“Sources close to the Republican caucus said someone obtained McMillin’s phone and discovered at least one video that showed the lawmaker involved in sexual contact. The sources did not detail who else was involved.”

Expelled Michigan Lawmaker Will Run Again
Former Michigan state Rep. Cindy Gamrat (R), who was expelled from office six days ago after she and a fellow lawmaker were found to have covered up their extramarital affair, said she has filed to run in the November primary election to fill her own vacant seat, Reuters reports.
Police have began “a criminal investigation into the use of tax funds to cover up the affair she had with fellow lawmaker Todd Courser. Both are Republicans and members of the Tea Party movement.”
Michigan Lawmakers Ousted in Sex Scandal Cover Up
“It took 14 hours, two failed votes and a day full of drama, but at 3:12 a.m. Friday, state Rep. Todd Courser (R) resigned from his state House seat, and an hour later, Rep. Cindy Gamrat (R) was expelled on a 91-12 vote, ending a controversial sex and cover-up scandal that has rocked Lansing for the last month,” the Detroit Free Press reports.
“The scandal swirling around Courser and Gamrat had been rumored for months, but burst onto the public scene last month when audio recordings surfaced and revealed that Courser had asked his staff to send an anonymous, “false flag” e-mail that he had written, saying he was addicted to drugs and pornography, and paid for sex with men outside a Lansing bar. His staff refused to participate in the attempt to make it appear that Courser was the victim of a smear campaign and to downplay the affair he was having with Gamrat.”
Jindal Faces Yet Another Budget Crisis
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) and state legislators “were all smiles when they passed the state budget in June, saying they had ended Louisiana’s worst budget crisis in 25 years and averted deep spending cuts,” the Baton Rouge Advocate reports.
“But less than three months later, the budget already is beginning to bleed red ink, and programs for those institutions are again at risk. Legislators and Jindal are facing calls that they act without delay to make the cuts needed to bring the budget back into balance as required under the state constitution — rather than take the politically easy way out by passing the buck to the next governor and Legislature.”
Lawmakers Deny They Were ‘Making Out’
Two Minnesota lawmakers, Rep. Tim Kelly (R) and Rep. Tara Mack (R), vehemently denied a park ranger’s report that they were “making out” in a car, KARE reports.
From the ranger’s notes: “Was making out with female in car. When I approached the female’s pants were unzipped and pulled down.”
Kelly and Mack, who are both married to other people, said the park ranger’s statement “was completely false and egregious.” They claim they met in the park to “exchange some documents.”
Reports Claim Alabama Governor Had an Affair
Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) engaged in an extramarital affair with his former communications director, leading First Lady Dianne Bentley to file for divorce last Friday after 50 years of marriage, sources tell Legal Schnauzer.
Birmingham News: “Several media outlets – bloggers and radio talkers – this morning cited ‘sources’ as they reported that Gov. Robert Bentley has without question had an affair with a female staff member, a torrid love cuddle that caused the governor’s wife of a half century, Dianne Bentley, to file for divorce and ask for everything the guy ever made.”

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan’s (R) housing secretary “will stay in the job despite calls for his ouster over remarks suggesting that mothers might deliberately poison their children with lead to obtain free housing,” the Baltimore Sun reports.

Law Jindal Wanted to Invoke Doesn’t Exist
Baton Rouge Advocate: “The hope that Gov. Bobby Jindal might invoke a state ‘Heritage Act’ to keep the four controversial public monuments in New Orleans in place may be a lost cause. Though Jindal’s administration pledged Thursday to research the law and its possible applicability to the statue controversy, it turns out Louisiana doesn’t have such a law.”
Brownback’s Brother Accused of Terrorizing Neighbors
The brother of Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback (R) is accused of terrorizing his neighbors, the Topeka Capital Journal reports.
“Adversaries say he has woven a liquor-infused tapestry of fear colored by intimidation, abuse and lies. The saga features stalking, death threats, trespassing, drive-by gunfire, massive explosions, cattle theft, loan defaults, hit-and-run driving and marital strife… There is trepidation among acquaintances to speak freely, a point accentuated by the number expressing nervousness about reprisal if they were candid. There is genuine fear.”
Lawmaker Fakes Smear Campaign to Hide Affair
Michigan state Rep. Todd Courser (R) “planned the distribution of a fictional email alleging he had sex with a male prostitute in a bid to conceal his relationship with Rep. Cindy Gamrat (R),” according to audio recordings obtained by The Detroit News.
“Courser said on one recording the email was designed to create ‘a complete smear campaign’ of exaggerated, false claims about him and Gamrat so a public revelation about the legislators’ relationship would seem ‘mild by comparison.'”
“The pair are socially conservative legislators who often invoke their Christian faith in pursuit of new legislation governing gun rights, abortion and marriage.”
