Saline County, Kansas Commissioner Jim Gile (R) told the Salina Journal it was a “bad choice of words” when he used the expression “nigger-rigging it” in a heated discussion that was being recorded.

Gile insisted that he meant to say “jury-rigged,” noting “I had it on my brain and this came out. It was a bad choice of words. I’m sorry.”

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) “has said his daughter and her husband paid for their own wedding. So a $15,000 check from a major campaign donor to pay for the food at the affair was a gift to the bride and groom and not to him and therefore did not have to be publicly disclosed under the law,” the Washington Post reports.

But documents show that McDonnell “signed the catering contract, making him financially responsible for the 2011 event. The governor made handwritten notes to the caterer in the margins. In addition, the governor paid nearly $8,000 in deposits for the catering.”

A new Rutgers-Eagleton Poll in New Jersey finds Gov. Chris Christie is still enjoying a high job approval rating from his New Jersey constituents, but the number has dipped from 74% to 68%.

“After months of pushing a dramatic proposal to swap the state’s income and corporate taxes in favor of higher, broader sales tax, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) is shelving his proposal,” the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

“In a speech opening the 2013 legislative session, Jindal is telling lawmakers that he is taking his plan off the table even as he said he will not ‘pout’ or ‘take his ball and go home,’ instead asking lawmakers to develop and pass their own version of a plan to phase out the state’s income tax, according to a copy of the governor’s prepared remarks.”

Jindal’s approval has plummeted in Louisiana since he announced his tax plan.

Nevada state Assemblywoman Lucy Flores (D-LV) “received threats after giving an emotional testimony about an abortion she had as a teenager,” the Huffington Post reports.

She made the comments during a sex education bill hearing earlier this week, according to the Reno Gazette Journal, noting “sex education was hard to come by” after her mother left the family when Flores was just nine years old.

“She’s brilliant and she’s dedicated, she’s tough. She also happens to be, by far, the best looking attorney general.”

A new Southern Media & Opinion Research poll in Louisiana finds Gov. Bobby Jindal’s (R) approval rating dropped from 51% in October to just under 38% in March due to voter dissatisfaction with state fiscal and education policies.

Interestingly, the poll shows President Obama is currently more popular than Jindal in the state, eking ahead of the governor five points.

A political donor paid for the $15,000 wedding reception for the daughter of Virginia Gov. Robert McDonnell (R) and his wife, Maureen, attended by about 200 guests at the governor’s mansion, the Washington Post reports.

The gift from Jonnie R. Williams Sr., the chief executive of a company that has made major contributions to McDonnell’s campaigns and that is the subject of a federal securities investigation, was not disclosed by McDonnell.

It’s “just one element of the McDonnells’ close relationship with Williams and his company, a relationship that has included rides on Williams’s corporate jet, personal gifts to the first family and efforts by the governor and his wife to promote the company.”

Republican lawmakers in North Carolina want to make it harder to get a divorce, the Raleigh News & Observer reports.

The proposed law “would extend to two years the current one-year waiting period in order for a divorce to be finalized. During that time, the couple would have to complete courses on improving their communications skills and conflict resolution. If the couple has children, they would have to take at least a four-hour class on the impact of divorce on children.”

Former Alabama candidate for agriculture commissioner Dale Peterson (R) — the one with the great law-and-order ad in 2010 — was arrested for shoplifting after he picked up a can of cashews, began eating the contents and put the empty can back on a shelf, the New York Daily News reports.

Peterson was arrested for shoplifting last month as well.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant (R) has nominated pro-life activist Terri Herring to sit on the Mississippi Board of Public Health — despite having no medical background, the Jackson Free Press reports.

The 11-member board “provides policy direction for the Mississippi Department of Health, appoints a state health officer to operate the agency; approves the state health plan; and approves all rules and regulations of the agency. Most of the board members are doctors and nurses.”

“In a voice vote masking how each individual lawmaker sided, the Nevada Assembly made the unprecedented decision to expel one of their own members — troubled Assemblyman Steven Brooks (D),” the Las Vegas Sun reports.

Troubled Nevada Assemblyman Steven Brooks (D) “was recommended for expulsion from the Legislature by a panel of his colleagues Tuesday, the culmination of more than three hours of closed-door debate about his fitness to serve,” the Las Vegas Review Journal reports.

The panel voted 6-1 to oust Brooks from his seat “following weeks of erratic behavior, including a domestic violence arrest and alleged threats of violence toward Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick (D)… The full Assembly will now decide Brooks’ fate, a decision that could come as early as Wednesday. An action to expel Brooks will require a two-thirds vote, and would be unprecedented in Nevada history.”

North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple (R) “has signed three abortion-limiting bills passed by the North Dakota Legislature, giving the state the most anti-abortion laws of any U.S. state and setting up possible legal challenges over provisions critics say are unconstitutional under Roe v. Wade,” the Fargo Forum reports.

“Dalrymple acknowledged the likelihood of an ensuing court battle and recommended that lawmakers set aside money for litigation.”
