Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD) told Politico he will make an announcement on his political future on Tuesday and “is widely expected to declare that he will retire at the end of 2014.”
“Behind the scenes, top Democrats have been expecting for months that Johnson will retire and have already been looking for other candidates for a challenging race in red South Dakota. Brendan Johnson, the senator’s son and U.S. Attorney for South Dakota, and former Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin — who lost her reelection bid in 2010 — are the leading choices to replace the elder Johnson.”
