Santorum Calls Possible GOP Rivals ‘Bomb Throwers’

Rick Santorum dismissed possible 2016 primary competitors Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) as “bomb throwers” with few achievements, the New York Times reports.

Said Santorum: “Do we really want someone with this little experience? And the only experience they have basically — not Rubio, but Cruz and Paul because I don’t think Rubio is going to go — is bomb throwing? Do we really want somebody who’s a bomb thrower, with no track record of any accomplishments?”

What do you suppose are Santorum’s “accomplishments? I am not aware of any.

Making Anita Bryant look sane by comparison? Or accidentally helping make gay marriage seem more logical to sane voters turned off by his hate speech? One big one is sticking PA voters with the bills for his brats’ private schools.

He did do some stuff… but the problem is that it was so long ago that no one remembers (or wants to take the time to look it up).

The obvious retort to Santorum by his intended targets would be “You had two terms in the Senate, where is the Santorum bill or law that you call an accomplishment?” But hats off to his handlers, trying to remove the label from Rabid Rick by applying it pre-emptively to other candidates.

What, pray tell, are Rick Santorum’s accomplishments? Losing to Bob Casey in a re-election bid by almost 20%?

    • growe

It’s my favorite Santorum accomplishment, by far.

I suppose there is introducing the word Santorum to the google lexicon, but in truth that was really Dan Savage’s great idea, not Rick Santorum’s.

        Pronunciation: san-TOR-um
        Function: noun
        Etymology: Savage Love – 05/29/03
        1. The frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the by-product of anal sex.

If anything is cooler or smarter than attacking hate speech with humor, I haven’t seen it yet. This was truly a brilliant way to make Santorum pay for his relenetless attacks on people he doesn’t know.

In the Paris attack context – I don’t know why extreme Muslims in western countries don’t pick up on it. You get a lot more of what you want when you are patient and non-violent: gays advanced far with no violence, MLK brough much better and faster results with non violence than any Black Panther type ever did.

I know this isn’t a particularly friendly forum for GOPers but man, I’m on ya’ll side when it comes to The Frothy One. Who was/is a bigger bomb thrower than Santorum?

    • terjeanderson

Flip a coin. Hard to argue whether Ted Cruz or Rick Santorum is more of a bomb thrower – certainly Rick tosses out culture war bon mots (“man on dog”) but I don’t have any memory of him assembling House Republicans and inciting them to force the government to close.

Both rhetorically and tactically, Cruz is probably slightly ahead of Santorum in the bomb tossing category — although they are both so far out there that it really is a distinction without a difference.

      • Flash Man

Definitely. I do think Rand gets something of a bad rap when it comes to being a “bomb-thrower.” You can disagree with him, but he’s actually pretty thoughtful and has sought out Dems like Ron Wyden and Cory Booker to work with on stuff. Probably more than than Santo every did in his 12 years.

Is this the pot calling the kettle black?

  • pisher

Oh this is shaping up awfully well. Must go make popcorn now. 🙂

I was worried he wasn’t even going to get involved, though this crop is nearly as entertaining.

    something something glass houses.

Santorum is a wingnut, but he’s right. Paul and Cruz have no record to run on and this is funny because these same people and their wingnut supporters also claim that Hillary Clinton have never accomplished anything while ignoring the fact that the people they want to run for president have no record to run on besides being an obstructionist

  • guest4455

With that said, Santorum should talk as he has accomplished nothing just like Cruz and Paul. Rubio should also be included in this list. What has he accomplished?

  • growe

Like Bachmann calling her peers “crazy” or Sarah Palin calling any other human “ignorant.” Words fail me.

It’s pretty obvious who little Ricky fears the most..

NEW YORK TIMES: Mr. Huckabee, who has a following of Christian conservatives, may present the biggest obstacle to Mr. Santorum, who narrowly won the Iowa caucuses in 2012. But Mr. Santorum said Mr. Huckabee would have considerable vulnerabilities on the right.

“He has to talk about Common Core. I love talking about Common Core,” Mr. Santorum said of the education standards that have become deeply unpopular among conservatives. “He has to talk about immigration and the Dream Act. I love talking about immigration and the Dream Act. He has to talk about taxes; I haven’t voted for a tax increase. I have a 100 percent record on taxes, signed every pledge every year.”

Mr. Santorum then turned to an aide and asked: “What’s the other one?”

Reminded that Mr. Huckabee had once backed a cap-and-trade program to reduce carbon emissions, Mr. Santorum exclaimed: “Climate change. This guy was for climate change.”

Bomb throwers sounds like a threat, I hope the fools don’t use that phase at an airport.
