Trump Pushes GOP Into Corner with Hispanics

August 19, 2015 · 6:49 am ET · 51 Comments

New York Times: “Republicans thought they had learned a lesson after 2012: Turning off Latino voters ensures defeat in the general election.”

“But as the disruptive presidential candidacy of Donald J. Trump continues to gain support, his hard line on immigration has driven rivals to match his biting anti-immigrant language and positions long considered extreme. It risks another general election cycle in which Hispanics view the party as unfriendly no matter who the nominee is, Republican strategists warned.”

The Guardian: “The most dramatic effect that Trump’s campaign has had already is to focus the Republican debate on immigration and dramatically shift the Overton Window – the politically viable spectrum of debate – on the issue.”

Greg Sargent: “So to sum up: Even in the best possible situation when it comes to turnout and the vote choices of the rest of the electorate, the Republican presidential candidate in 2016 is going to have to pull off an absolutely heroic performance among Hispanic voters if he’s going to win. That seemed awfully unlikely a week ago. How likely does it seem today?”
