Girl’s Encounter with Pope Was Planned for a Year

September 25, 2015 at 9:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 9 Comments

“Sophie Cruz’s brief encounter with Pope Francis during his parade in Washington this week appeared to be the kind of spontaneous moment that is so endearing about this pope: an initially hesitant young child wrapping an arm around his neck as he offers a kiss and a blessing,” the AP reports.

“But for 5-year-old Sophie, the moment unfolded as perfectly as it was scripted by members of a coalition of Los Angeles-based immigration rights groups. They had been preparing for nearly a year for the young girl from suburban Los Angeles to make a dash for the popemobile to deliver a message about the plight of immigrant parents living in the country illegally.”

Understanding Pope Francis’ Politics

September 25, 2015 at 9:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 12 Comments

“If you want to understand Pope Francis’ politics, look no further than the two American Catholics he singled out in his speech yesterday — Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton, who are hardly conservatives. Also note the issues where he was specific (abolishing the death penalty, calling for action against global warming, demanding tolerance for immigrants) and where he was vague (on life and family). No doubt, Pope Francis had something for everyone in that speech. But to us, it was revealing what he underscored and what he didn’t,” First Read notes.

Personal Information Removal Made Easy

Every day, marketers, data brokers, and even cybercriminals trade and exploit personal data—everything from your home address to your cell phone number. That’s why I use Incogni, which works quietly in the background to make my personal information hard to find online.

It removes my data from hundreds of databases used by advertisers, scammers, and identity thieves, reducing the chances of targeted phishing attacks or fraud. It also makes my details far less accessible to insurance companies, banks, and even potential employers.

The process is completely automated, and it gives me real peace of mind to know my personal information is being scrubbed from the internet. Save 55% on your annual subscription with code POLITICALWIRE. I highly recommend it.

Has Trump Miscalculated in Fight with Fox News?

September 25, 2015 at 8:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 25 Comments

Washington Post: “Never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel. That 19th century adage could be modernized for 2016: if you’re seeking the Republican presidential nomination, don’t screw around with Roger Ailes. The Fox News honcho wields enormous power over an incredibly influential medium, and he’s not messing around after Donald Trump declared that he’s boycotting the cable channel.”

“Megyn Kelly’s show opener last night demonstrated Trump’s dilemma. Kelly used a fresh round of polls to make the case that Trump is on the decline, even though the businessman still maintains a significant lead, using language that sounded like it was written expressly to get under his skin. Combined with critical comments by other Fox hosts, the harsher new tone spells real trouble for Trump.”

Insiders See Rubio as Beneficiary of Walker Exit

September 25, 2015 at 8:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 14 Comments

“Scott Walker’s exit is a big win for Marco Rubio. That’s the consensus of Republican insiders in Iowa and New Hampshire, with about 40 percent of our Politico Caucus members picking the junior senator from Florida over all other GOP contenders as the one most likely to benefit from Walker’s decision to quit.”

He added: “It will take place and it will be done effectively and warmly and humanely. And a lot of people will be very happy about it. Did you know i had a good Hispanic poll the other day?”

Double Political Suicide

September 25, 2015 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 19 Comments

Charles Krauthammer: “It’s a crazy time. One party is knowingly lurching toward disaster, marching inexorably to the coronation of a weak and deeply wounded presidential candidate. Meanwhile, the other party is flamboyantly shooting at itself and gratuitously alienating one significant electoral constituency after another.”

“And it’s only September. Of 2015.”

Bush Sticks with Tax Cuts

September 25, 2015 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 14 Comments

Jonathan Chait: “Like all of the non-Trump Republican candidates, Jeb Bush’s economic strategy is built around a program of regressive, debt-financed tax cuts, just as it was under the last Republican administration. In a very clever interview, John Harwood repeatedly asks Bush why he is pursuing this course despite its repeated failure. Bush’s attempts to respond reveal the tangle of denial, non-falsifiability, and cant that undergird the party’s unshakable commitment to voodoo economics.”

Cruz Waits to Lead the Anti-Establishment Wing

September 24, 2015 at 4:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 45 Comments

Amy Walter: “Trump and Carson are currently leading in the anti-establishment/cultural warrior group, but most GOPers see Cruz as the one to ultimately emerge. As the campaign wears on, Cruz has the combination of experience, money and infrastructure to survive the slog. The longer Trump and Carson sit under the microscope and the pressure, the less appealing they look.”

Rubio Slams Trump as ‘Insecure’

September 24, 2015 at 2:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 26 Comments

Sen. Marco Rubio is firing back at Donald Trump as “insecure” and “touchy” after the mogul has spent the past two days going after him, CNN reports.

Said Rubio: “He takes shots at everybody that gets anywhere close to him, in terms of a poll, or anytime he hits a rough spot, that’s what he doe. He had a really bad debate performance last week, he’s not well informed on the issues, he really never talks about issues and can’t have more than a 10 second sound bite on any key issue. So I think he’s really been exposed a little bit over the last seven days and he’s a very touchy and insecure guy and so that’s how he reacts. And people can see through it.”

Walker’s Campaign Was Already Deeply in Debt

September 24, 2015 at 12:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 18 Comments

In a little more than two months, Gov. Scott Walker’s presidential bid had amassed a debt of roughly $700,000, the Washington Post reports.

“A pared-down effort focused on staying afloat in Iowa would still cost around $1 million a month because of ongoing costs associated with ballot access, accounting and vendor contracts.”
