RNC chair Ronna McDaniel is planning to step down shortly after the South Carolina primary on Feb. 24, the New York Times reports.
Donald Trump, the likely Republican presidential nominee, is then expected promote North Carolina GOP chairman Michael Whatley as her replacement.
Under the arcana of the committee’s rules, however, Trump cannot simply install someone and a new election must take place.
Trump likes Whatley for one overwhelming reason: He is “a stop the steal guy,” as one person described him.
