Rep. Al Green (D-TX) delivered the dramatic tie vote last night that prevented House Republicans from impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Recovering from emergency surgery, Green left his hospital bed shortly before the vote to head to the Capitol.
From there, he was taken to the attending physician’s office, where a bed and other preparations awaited him. He was still wearing hospital clothes.
Said Green: “There was no way I was going to miss that vote… I stayed there, until I went upstairs for the vote.”
He was then rolled onto the House floor in a wheelchair to cast the decisive vote.
Following the vote, Green returned to the hospital.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) later admitted Republicans were outplayed saying that Democrats “hid one of their members waiting until the last minute, watching to see our votes, trying to throw us off on the numbers.”
But as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) later told reporters: “It’s not our responsibility to let House Republicans know which members will or will not be present on the House floor.”
