President Trump’s renewed assault on government accountability took an alarming turn late Friday night, as he reportedly fired as many as 17 federal inspectors general in a sweeping purge.

The late-night firings — which were not formally announced — marked a brazen escalation in Trump’s ongoing campaign to neuter oversight mechanisms that might restrain his authority.
