Senate Deadlocked on Deal to Speed Funding Vote

Punchbowl News: “A huge chunk of the federal government will run out of money at midnight tonight, but senators are still struggling to reach an agreement to pass a massive FY2026 spending package before the deadline.”

“Senate Majority Leader John Thune and his top lieutenants are contending with a backlash from conservatives over the deal between Democrats and the White House to split off funding for the Department of Homeland Security from the minibus and instead pass a two-week CR. It’s angering hardline Republicans in both chambers.”

“That’s part of what’s made it so difficult to secure a time agreement in the Senate. And anger among House GOP conservatives is threatening to derail the entire package in that chamber, creating a massive headache for Speaker Mike Johnson.”
