John Thune Walks the Trump Tightrope

Punchbowl News: “We’ve seen this movie for a decade. President Donald Trump gets tired of an ally he no longer finds useful and kicks them to the curb.”

”Is Senate Majority Leader John Thune heading in that direction?”

”Trump on Wednesday declined to say whether Thune is the right person to lead Senate Republicans amid an inter-party struggle over the president’s top legislative priority, the SAVE America Act.”

Said Trump: “We’re going to find out, and I’ll let you know.”

“We’re going to find out” is Trump’s way of reminding Thune that even the Senate majority leader serves at his pleasure — or is expected to act as though he does.

Taegan Goddard is the founder of Political Wire, one of the earliest and most influential political web sites. He also runs Political Job Hunt, Electoral Vote Map and the Political Dictionary.

Goddard spent more than a decade as managing director and chief operating officer of a prominent investment firm in New York City. Previously, he was a policy adviser to a U.S. Senator and Governor.
