Samuel Alito Says He Will Remain On Supreme Court

August 7, 2026 · 2:23 pm ET · Leave a Comment

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito said that he is “here for another term,” casting doubt on the idea that he might retire late this year to ensure President Trump can appoint a successor, Bloomberg reports.

“Should Democrats take control of the Senate in November, they would be in position to stop Trump from filling any Supreme Court vacancies for the last two years of his presidency. If Alito retired shortly after the election, Republicans could potentially confirm a successor during a lame-duck session before the new Congress convenes in January.”
