Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), the longest-serving congressional Black Democrat in Mississippi, won his primary race for the 2nd congressional district on Tuesday, offering a rebuttal to calls for older lawmakers to step aside for a younger generation, the New York Times reports.
Oil Prices Climb Again
“Oil prices forged higher as concern over disruption to energy flows in the Middle East outweighed hopes that governments will agree to a record release of oil reserves,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
Issa’s Seat Now Leans Democratic
Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball: “Democrats are now favored in the open CA-48 following Rep. Darrell Issa’s (R) retirement—it profiles as the kind of open seat that very often flips in midterms.”
This War’s Economic Crisis Could Get Much Worse
Derek Thompson: “This isn’t just about the price of oil. It’s about everything oil becomes—fertilizer, AI chips, plastic—and the cost of snapping the achilles heel of the global shipping economy.”
Trump Directs War With the Markets Top of Mind
“President Trump’s fixation on financial markets as the measure of his stewardship of the economy came into focus again this week when he vacillated on his outlook for the length of the war with Iran as oil and stock prices swung wildly,” the New York Times reports.
Bondi Has Moved to Military Housing Because of Threats
“Attorney General Pam Bondi has quietly relocated to one of several military bases in the Washington area where other Trump administration officials also live, after facing threats from drug cartels and critics of her actions in handling the Jeffrey Epstein case,” the New York Times reports.
Trump’s Iran War Messaging Is All Over the Map
Axios: “Across interviews, press conferences and social media, Trump floated and erased timelines, predicted the war’s end or promised new escalation, and argued he must choose Iran’s new leader while the administration denies regime change is the goal.”
“The administration claims its goals of knocking out Iran’s nuclear capabilities, ending its support for terrorism and defeating its navy are clear. But Trump’s messaging is more fluid.”
“Just 33% told Reuters-Ipsos that Trump clearly explained the Iran mission’s purpose.”
Inside the GOP Plan to Save the Midterms
“President Trump’s top advisers are urging House Republicans to turn the 2026 midterms into a choice election — and hammer Democrats on taxes, crime and border security,” Axios reports.
“Midterm elections are almost always referendums on the president and the party in power.”
“But Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Trump are looking to buck history and retain the House by focusing on the Democrats’ national brand, with 52% of voters viewing the Democratic Party unfavorably.”
U.S. and Israel Have Different Timelines for War
“President Trump’s suggestions that the war with Iran might soon be over are bringing a new problem to the fore: Israel and the U.S. have different ideas on when to end the conflict and under what conditions,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
‘Titanic’ Statue of Trump and Epstein on the Mall
Washington Post: “The anonymous artists who have targeted President Donald Trump with satirical statues and installations in Washington struck again on the National Mall on Tuesday morning with an enormous statue of the president embracing the deceased convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in a reenactment of a famous scene from the movie ‘Titanic.’”
How Trump Miscalculated Iran’s Response to War
New York Times: “The extent of that miscalculation was laid bare in recent days, as Iran threatened to fire at commercial oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic choke point through which all ships must pass on their way out of the Persian Gulf. In response to the Iranian threats, commercial shipping has come to a standstill in the Gulf, oil prices have spiked, and the Trump administration has scrambled to find ways to tamp down an economic crisis that has triggered higher gasoline prices for Americans.”
“The episode is emblematic of how much Mr. Trump and his advisers misjudged how Iran would respond to a conflict that the government in Tehran sees as an existential threat. Iran has responded far more aggressively than it did during last June’s 12-day war, firing barrages of missiles and drones at U.S. military bases, cities in Arab nations across the Middle East, and on Israeli population centers.”
White House Isn’t Panicking About Oil Prices
“The Trump administration believes it can withstand a brief spike in oil prices — for as many as four weeks, as one person close to the White House suggested — before the political hit does lasting damage,” Politico reports.
“Administration officials’ confidence was bolstered Tuesday when oil dropped to $80 per barrel, down from $120 this weekend, reinforcing their view that the spikes are temporary and manageable.”
A Tough Time to Be a Republican on Capitol Hill
Punchbowl News: “Dragged by President Donald Trump into another war in the Middle East, the GOP’s problems are growing worse every day, and there’s no sign things have hit bottom yet.”
“Trump and top administration officials have struggled to come up with a clear rationale for the U.S. war on Iran, agree on a timeline for ending it or define what victory looks like. Early polling shows a majority of Americans oppose the war. The conflict has rattled global financial markets, and oil prices have spiked. That means higher costs for gas and food when millions are already struggling to pay their bills.”
“Some Republicans want Trump to just declare victory and end the war right now.”

Runoff Set for Greene’s Seat
Clay Fuller (R) will face Shawn Harris (D) in a runoff to replace former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in Georgia’s 14th congressional district, CNN projects.
Politico: “Fuller, a local prosecutor and Air National Guard member, is heavily favored in the April 7 runoff in the deep-red northwest Georgia district. He overcame a crowded field of Republican competitors with the help of an endorsement from President Donald Trump in early February.”
“But his inability to win 50 percent of the vote means the seat will remain open for another month, hampering House Republicans’ already-slim majority.”
Kevin Hern to Announce Senate Bid from Oklahoma
Rep. Kevin Hern (R-OK) will announce Wednesday afternoon that he is running for Senate, Punchbowl News reports.
