Economy Gets Best Marks In Two Decades

December 20, 2019 at 8:23 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new CNN poll finds the U.S. economy earns its highest ratings in almost two decades, potentially boosting President Trump in matchups against the Democrats vying to face him in next year’s election.

“Overall, 76% rate economic conditions in the U.S. today as very or somewhat good, significantly more than those who said so at this time last year (67%). This is the highest share to say the economy is good since February 2001, when 80% said so.”

The match ups: Joe Biden leads Trump nationally 49% to 44%, while Bernie Sanders tops Trump 49% to 45%. Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg each run about even with the president.

GOP Lawmaker Accused of Domestic Terrorism

December 20, 2019 at 8:19 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A report produced for the Washington state legislature found state Rep. Matthew Shea (R) “participated in an act of domestic terrorism against the United States” and represents a threat of political violence.

The report also said Shea “advocated the replacement of U.S. democracy with a theocracy and the killing of all males who do not agree.”

The Spokane Spokesman-Review reports Republicans expelled Shea from their caucus.

Shea responded with characteristic defiance, writing on Facebook: “Like we are seeing with our President this is a sham investigation meant to silence those of us who stand up against attempts to disarm and destroy our great country. I will not back down, I will not give in, I will not resign. Stand strong fellow Patriots.”

Trump Slams Evangelical Magazine

December 20, 2019 at 8:14 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump went after Christianity Today in a series of tweets after it published an editorial calling or his removal from office.

Said Trump: “A far left magazine, or very ‘progressive,’ as some would call it, which has been doing poorly and hasn’t been involved with the Billy Graham family for many years, Christianity Today, knows nothing about reading a perfect transcript of a routine phone call and would rather … have a Radical Left nonbeliever, who wants to take your religion and your guns, than Donald Trump as your President.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

December 20, 2019 at 6:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It means that they know they’re gonna lose. And if you win, you’re going to serve in the minority under a Democratic president. You may want to spend more time with your family.”

— Speaker Nancy Pelosi, quoted by Politico, on the high number of Republican retirements from Congress

Mulvaney Expected to Depart After Senate Trial

December 20, 2019 at 6:38 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney is widely expected to leave his current position once the Senate wraps up its impeachment trial and the intense scrutiny of the West Wing settles down.”

“Trump allies and White House aides, who have been nudging the president in recent weeks to find a new leader for the team as it delves into a crucial reelection campaign, have been circulating lists of potential replacements for weeks.”

“Mulvaney no longer wields much control over White House staff. Lately, he has been left out of major personnel and policy decisions, and he is not driving the strategy on impeachment even though he occupies what is historically the most powerful job in the West Wing.”

Bernie Sanders Goes Unchallenged

December 20, 2019 at 6:25 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Sanders is a top candidate whom nobody wants to attack.”

“While Ms. Warren, Ms. Klobuchar and even the billionaire Tom Steyer took unprovoked shots at Mr. Buttigieg, nobody went after the Vermont senator, whose standing in the race has only risen since his October heart attack.”

Klobuchar Busts Out

December 20, 2019 at 6:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “She tore into Pete Buttigieg and swiped at Bernie Sanders. And by the time the debate ended Thursday, it appeared that Amy Klobuchar might have a chance.”

“For months, the Minnesota senator has languished in public opinion polls outside of the top tier — an ineffectual moderate alternative to Joe Biden. But in one night, she was commanding a second look, and marking a late, sharp-elbowed turn in her campaign.”

New York Times: “Now the task for Ms. Klobuchar is to turn her recent well-reviewed debate performances into increased support in Iowa, the state where she placed the fate of her campaign. On Friday she’ll begin a four-day, 27-county Iowa tour designed to build momentum to try to launch her into the campaign’s first tier.”

Biden’s Best Debate Yet

December 20, 2019 at 6:10 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “It’s always perilous to guess how voters will react. But the major takeaway from Thursday’s Democratic rumble in Los Angeles might be that Joe Biden had his best debate night yet. Not only did he not commit any of the rhetorical stumbles that plagued him in previous outings, but two of his main rivals — Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg — spent the evening sparring over the role donors play in American politics, while Amy Klobuchar threw haymakers at Mayor Pete for his lack of experience and his inability to win a statewide race in Indiana.”

“Klobuchar’s attack went straight to Buttigieg’s greatest strategic vulnerability, and one that Democratic primary voters care deeply about this cycle: Can he actually win? Whether they buy his answer will determine whether the South Bend mayor is merely this year’s latest fad, or whether he can surprise everyone in Iowa, where he’s been leading in the polls of late. And how they react to her performance will also determine if the Minnesota senator can finally break out of the bottom tier.”

New York Times: “Biden may still be the Democratic leader in national polls, but you wouldn’t know it from Thursday’s debate. For the third consecutive face-off, he often faded into the background — and that could be a good thing for him.”

Bevin Defends Pardon of Child Rapist

December 19, 2019 at 8:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin (R) “defended his controversial last-minute pardon of a man convicted of raping a 9-year-old, saying there was no physical evidence of her abuse,” the Louisville Courier-Journal reports.

Said Bevin: “There was zero evidence… Both their hymens were intact. This is perhaps more specific than people would want, but trust me. If you have been repeatedly sexually violated as a small child by an adult, there are going to be repercussions of that physically and medically.”

Evangelical Magazine Calls for Trump’s Removal

December 19, 2019 at 7:39 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Christianity Today, the flagship Evangelical magazine founded by the Rev. Billy Graham, called for President Trump to be removed from office.

“We have reserved judgment on Mr. Trump for years now. Some have criticized us for our reserve. But when it comes to condemning the behavior of another, patient charity must come first. So we have done our best to give evangelical Trump supporters their due, to try to understand their point of view, to see the prudential nature of so many political decisions they have made regarding Mr. Trump.”

“To use an old cliché, it’s time to call a spade a spade, to say that no matter how many hands we win in this political poker game, we are playing with a stacked deck of gross immorality and ethical incompetence. And just when we think it’s time to push all our chips to the center of the table, that’s when the whole game will come crashing down. It will crash down on the reputation of evangelical religion and on the world’s understanding of the gospel. And it will come crashing down on a nation of men and women whose welfare is also our concern.”

Trump Isn’t Impeached Until House Tells Senate

December 19, 2019 at 7:35 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Noah Feldman: “The Constitution doesn’t say how fast the articles must go to the Senate. Some modest delay is not inconsistent with the Constitution, or how both chambers usually work.”

“But an indefinite delay would pose a serious problem. Impeachment as contemplated by the Constitution does not consist merely of the vote by the House, but of the process of sending the articles to the Senate for trial. Both parts are necessary to make an impeachment under the Constitution: The House must actually send the articles and send managers to the Senate to prosecute the impeachment. And the Senate must actually hold a trial.”

Prosecutor Scrutinizing Ex-CIA Director Brennan

December 19, 2019 at 7:31 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The federal prosecutor scrutinizing the Russia investigation has begun examining the role of the former CIA director John Brennan in how the intelligence community assessed Russia’s 2016 election interference,” the New York Times reports.

“John Durham, the United States attorney leading the investigation, has requested Mr. Brennan’s emails, call logs and other documents from the CIA… He wants to learn what Mr. Brennan told other officials, including the former FBI director James Comey, about his and the CIA’s views of a notorious dossier of assertions about Russia and Trump associates.”

Chief Justice Won’t Have Much Power at Senate Trial

December 19, 2019 at 5:45 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Chief Justice Roberts, seated during the trial at the Senate chamber’s rostrum, might appear to be the authority before whom the president’s accusers and defenders plead their cases. Yet he will hold less power over the proceedings than a municipal court judge hearing a pickpocketing case. The trial’s rules will be written by the jury — the Senate — whose Republican leadership has already pronounced the defendant not guilty.”

“The Trump trial procedures will be adapted from the Senate’s 1986 impeachment guidelines, which allow the chief justice to decide ‘questions of relevancy, materiality, and redundancy of evidence,’ among other matters. But the Senate can overrule those decisions by simple majority, akin to letting seven of 12 jurors reverse a trial judge on any given motion in an ordinary case.”

Ex-Officials Say Putin Influenced Trump’s Ukraine Views

December 19, 2019 at 5:14 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Almost from the moment he took office, President Trump seized on a theory that troubled his senior aides: Ukraine, he told them on many occasions, had tried to stop him from winning the White House,” the Washington Post reports.

“After meeting privately in July 2017 with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Group of 20 summit in Hamburg, Trump grew more insistent that Ukraine worked to defeat him.”

“The president’s intense resistance to the assessment of U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia systematically interfered in the 2016 campaign — and the blame he cast instead on a rival country — led many of his advisers to think that Putin himself helped spur the idea of Ukraine’s culpability.”

House Passes Trade Deal to Replace NAFTA

December 19, 2019 at 4:47 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The House of Representatives passed a new version of a trade agreement to link the U.S., Mexico and Canada, a key step toward updating North America’s trade rules and dispelling concerns Washington will act on threats to sever links with its neighbors,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
