Koch Network Gets Pushback After Endorsing Haley

December 4, 2023 at 11:30 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The political branch of the powerful Koch network is facing scrutiny as operatives chafe against a decision to endorse Nikki Haley for president that many see as out of step with their values,” NBC News reports.

“The decision by Americans for Prosperity’s super PAC to get behind a candidate with seemingly little chance of prevailing in the GOP primary — and, more critically, one who espouses views contrary to key parts of the Koch network’s well-financed advocacy efforts — has confounded longtime Koch-world operatives alike.”

George Santos Expelled for Being Like Donald Trump

December 4, 2023 at 11:10 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Adam Kinzinger: “It seems telling. A liar, fraud, money launderer, indicted, hanger on-er is expelled from Congress, while a liar, fraud, money launderer, indicted, hanger on-er is leading the GOP race for President. This conundrum is not a conundrum at all. In fact, it’s a feature of today’s GOP.”

Did Hamas Make Millions Betting Against Israeli Shares?

December 4, 2023 at 10:52 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7 caught the Israeli army unprepared. But somebody seemingly knew in advance and made billions betting against Israeli shares traded locally and on Wall Street five days before the attack,” Haaretz reports.

“Short-selling Israeli shares – betting that they will fall – spiked in the days before October 7, far exceeding the short selling during ‘numerous other periods of crisis,’ Robert J. Jackson, Jr., Joshua Mitts and colleagues wrote in a paper titled ‘Trading on Terror?‘ published Sunday on SSRN.”

Second Trump Term May Be More Radical Than His First

December 4, 2023 at 10:49 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Trump’s violent and authoritarian rhetoric on the 2024 campaign trail has attracted growing alarm and comparisons to historical fascist dictators and contemporary populist strongmen. In recent weeks, he has dehumanized his adversaries as ‘vermin’ who must be ‘rooted out,’ declared that immigrants are ‘poisoning the blood of our country,’ encouraged the shooting of shoplifters and suggested that the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, deserved to be executed for treason.”

“As he runs for president again facing four criminal prosecutions, Mr. Trump may seem more angry, desperate and dangerous to American-style democracy than in his first term. But the throughline that emerges is far more long-running: He has glorified political violence and spoken admiringly of autocrats for decades.”

The Atlantic: If Trump wins.

Biden Attempt to Reconcile with Muslims Met with Anger

December 4, 2023 at 10:46 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Arab and Muslim American leaders who met with Joe Biden have come under intense criticism from others in the communities, the latest sign that Democratic efforts to soothe relations with pro-Palestinian groups since the outbreak of the Israeli-Hamas war have largely been met with skepticism and anger,” The Messenger reports.

“Multiple people with knowledge of the meeting between Biden and a slate of Arab and Muslim American leaders described the meeting as fraught, with attendees raising voices to the president, speaking through tears, and detailing the personal impact the war between Hamas and Israel has had on their families.”

Comer Says GOP Has the Votes for Impeachment Probe

December 4, 2023 at 9:26 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Oversight Committee Chair Rep. James Comer (R-KY) said he is “confident” House Republicans have enough votes to move forward with an impeachment inquiry into President Biden, The Messenger reports.

Said Comer: “We are unified at a time when it’s no secret our conference is broken in a lot of ways. I’m confident we’re going to have the votes to move forward with this impeachment inquiry.”

But he did take aim at one GOP lawmaker: “Ken Buck, he votes ‘no’ on everything. He’s certainly doing everything he can to try out to be the next anchor for MSNBC. But at the end of the day, I think our members realize that this is of the utmost importance.”

Judge Grants Louisiana Extra Time for New Map

December 4, 2023 at 9:22 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Louisiana lawmakers now have until the end of January to draw and pass new congressional boundaries to replace a current map that a federal judge said violates the Voting Rights Act by diluting the power of the state’s Black voters,” the AP reports.

“However, several questions still linger — including if and when the GOP-dominated Legislature will return to the Capitol and, most of all, if lawmakers will be able to agree on a map.”

Nikki Haley Has One Really Narrow Path

December 4, 2023 at 8:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

From ‘Bidenomics’ to ‘MAGAnomics’

December 4, 2023 at 8:27 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “There’s a new word you’re going to be hearing a lot of in Washington: ‘MAGAnomics.’ Back in September, that’s what Biden started calling the GOP’s policy plans. It seems to have been dropped from the Biden lexicon in favor of pushing ‘Bidenomics.’ But recently congressional Democrats and party strategists have expressed misgivings about branding the party with that awkward label. After all, if voters hate the economy, why tie Biden closer to it?”

“But while the use of Bidenomics has been ebbing, the use of MAGAnomics is on the upswing, including in a new memo the White House will release today attacking the GOP’s health care proposals.”

However, the Washington Post notes Republicans are increasingly trying to co-opt the term “Bidenomics.”

Tim Sheehy Calls for ‘Pure Privatization’ of Health Care

December 4, 2023 at 8:23 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Montana U.S. Senate candidate Tim Sheehy (R) “said earlier this year that he wants to privatize the U.S. healthcare system,” Semafor reports.

“The comments, made at an August meet-and-greet in Glasgow, Mont., were captured on an audio recording obtained by Semafor. Speaking to a group of attendees, Sheehy argued that the Affordable Care Act’s subsidies for insurance coverage and other federal health programs had inflated the cost of medical treatment.”

Said Sheehy: “Our hospitals have been built around federal healthcare subsidies. In my opinion we need to return healthcare to pure privatization.”

Is TikTok Making Americans Hate the Economy?

December 4, 2023 at 8:08 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Pfeiffer: “Ignoring TikTok, the overall media coverage of the Biden economy has been relentlessly and inaccurately negative. For more than a year, the public was bombarded with reports about an impending recession that never materialized. Who could forget a few years ago when the news was filled with stories about turkey scarcity at Thanksgiving and holiday presents that would never arrive because of supply chain issues? The stories about the potential problems led the news and trended online. When the turkeys were in stock and the holiday presents arrived, most news outlets buried the stories. To use an outdated media metaphor — the economic problems are ‘on A1 above the fold’ and buried in the middle of the paper.”

“The media has always had a relentless focus on bad news. People used to say ‘if it bleeds, it leads,’ referring to how local news always led with crime, fires, and car accidents. A decade ago, CNN covered the missing Malaysian airplane 24-7 for months even though there was no news. This addiction to bad news has worsened since mainstream media outlets came to depend on social media traffic for ad revenue.”

“Social media — particularly TikTok — is arguably worse. The most viral posts on the economy have been overwhelmingly negative. Even if the anecdotes themselves are accurate, they lack the broader context about shrinking inflation and rising wages.”

White House Warns Ukraine Money to Run Out

December 4, 2023 at 7:28 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The U.S. will be unable to continue providing weapons and equipment to Ukraine if Congress doesn’t approve additional funding by the end of the year, the White House said on Monday, warning of devastating consequences on the battlefield if lawmakers fail to act,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
