World Braces for Bigger Trade Wars if Trump Wins

October 3, 2024 at 5:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have embraced tariffs, but their plans differ significantly. Ms. Harris’s campaign has said she would use tariffs in a “targeted” fashion — possibly mirroring the approach of President Biden, who recently imposed tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, silicon chips and solar panels. Like Mr. Biden, she has emphasized working closely with allies.”

“Mr. Trump, in contrast, has said his approach to trade would be even more aggressive than the trade wars of his first term, when he imposed stiff tariffs on allies and rivals to obtain concessions and try to bolster American manufacturing. He has proposed a 60 percent tariff on products from China and a tariff of more than 10 percent on other goods from around the world.”

Trump Called Bannon on January 5th

October 2, 2024 at 10:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Prosecutors, who had more access to telephone records and emails than the congressional committee that investigated Jan. 6, allege that Trump spoke to ally Steve Bannon by phone on Jan. 5 less than two hours before Bannon issued a prescient and provocative prediction on his War Room podcast that ‘all hell is going to break loose’ on Jan. 6.”

Trump Spent More Than He Raised Again

October 2, 2024 at 8:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s campaign spent more than it raised for the second month in a row as the Republican nominee struggles to keep pace with Democrat Kamala Harris’ robust fundraising operation,” Bloomberg reports.

A Storm, a Strike and War Abroad

October 2, 2024 at 8:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Vice President Kamala Harris has cast herself as a candidate of the future, but she has been yanked back by the problems of the present as the Middle East lurches toward a wider war, a longshoremen’s strike threatens to undermine the country’s economy and Americans across the Southeast struggle to recover from a deadly hurricane,” the New York Times reports.

“The confluence of domestic and global traumas combined to knock Ms. Harris off a message that has been carefully calibrated since she took over for President Biden to showcase her as the avatar of ‘a new way forward,’ as her slogan puts it.”

Los Angeles Times: Missiles, a hurricane and a strike: How 3 crises are shaping the presidential race.

The results also show Democratic voters are more enthusiastic about their choice at the top of the ballot than Republicans, with one week left until early voting starts.

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

October 2, 2024 at 6:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“There is a reason Mike Pence was not on that stage with me.”

— Gov. Tim Walz, quoted by the Washington Post, criticizing Sen. J.D. Vance for refusing to admit Donald Trump lost the 2020 election.

Trump Appeared Confused and Tired at Today’s Events

October 2, 2024 at 6:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Trump often speaks in a digressive, extemporaneous style that thrills his fans at large-scale rallies. But Tuesday’s event, in front of almost entirely reporters, was especially scattered and hard to follow…”

“Trump spoke slowly and appeared tired. It was his second stop of the day, and he has picked up the pace of campaigning in recent weeks.”

Melania Trump Passionately Defends Abortion Rights

October 2, 2024 at 6:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Melania Trump made an extraordinary declaration in an eagerly awaited memoir to be published a month from election day: she is a passionate supporter of a woman’s right to control her own body – including the right to abortion,” The Guardian reports.

Writes Trump: “It is imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference of having children, based on their own convictions, free from any intervention or pressure from the government.”

Next-in-Line Mayor Got Funds From Donor in Indictment

October 2, 2024 at 6:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, the elected official who would replace Mayor Eric Adams if he resigns, accepted political contributions from a businessman who is accused of orchestrating illegal donations to Adams,” the Washington Post reports.

A Major Indictment of the Supreme Court

October 2, 2024 at 6:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Hasen: “It’s rare to simultaneously feel red-hot anger and wistfulness, especially when merely reading a document. But those are exactly the emotions that washed over me when I read the redacted version of special counsel Jack Smith’s brief reciting in detail the evidence against Donald Trump for attempting to subvert the 2020 election.”

“The anger is at the Supreme Court for depriving the American people of the chance for a full public airing of Donald Trump’s attempt to use fraud and trickery to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential victory before voters consider whether to put Trump back in office beginning January 2025.”

“The wistfulness comes with the recognition that there is about an even chance that this will be the last evidence produced by the federal government of this nefarious plot. If Donald Trump wins election next month, the end of this prosecution is certain and the risks of future election subversion heightened.”

Politico: Jack Smith lays out his case against Trump in vivid detail.

Sherrod Brown Raises Massive Amount

October 2, 2024 at 5:14 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Sherrod Brown’s (D-OH) campaign says it raised $30.6 million in the third quarter, a massive figure that could help Democrats blunt the spending disparity with GOP outside groups in the Buckeye State,” Punchbowl News reports.

“Brown has been polling ahead of his GOP opponent Bernie Moreno, but the race will be extremely close in a state that former President Donald Trump is expected to win handily.”

Another Poll Shows Harris Ahead Nationally

Multiple Affairs May Push RFK Jr. Out of Trump’s Orbit

October 2, 2024 at 4:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“At least three women are claiming to have had romantic relationships with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in just the last year, as he pursued a long-shot bid for the presidency,” Mediaite reports.

“People close to Kennedy now fear the revelation of those alleged relationships could jeopardize his standing in Donald Trump’s orbit, particularly as the former president and 2024 Republican nominee fights to win over suburban women.”

Elon Musk Gave Millions to GOP Causes Far Earlier

October 2, 2024 at 4:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Elon Musk’s financial support for Republican causes has been much more extensive and started earlier than previously known,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The Tesla CEO quietly gave tens of millions of dollars to groups with ties to Trump aide Stephen Miller and supporters of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s presidential bid.”

“The financial contributions, which haven’t previously been reported, show how Musk, who seemed to undergo a rapid political transformation this year, was a major force in funding Republican initiatives and candidates well before starting a super political-action committee in support of former President Donald Trump.”

“They also make him one of the biggest donors to conservative causes, which in combination with his large social-media following makes him one of the most influential figures in U.S. politics.”

Judge Unseals Special Counsel Filing

October 2, 2024 at 3:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Judge Tanya Chutkan has unsealed Special Counsel Jack Smith’s 165-page redacted motion detailing evidence against Donald Trump in the federal election fraud case.

Smith argues that Trump “resorted to crimes” in a failed bid to cling to power after losing the 2020 election.

One interesting item: Smith says he plans to prove at trial that Trump and his allies completely made up claims about non-citizens voting.

Another item: Mike Pence repeatedly told Trump he saw no evidence of election fruad.

Nearly 40 Million Watched the Vice Presidential Debate

October 2, 2024 at 3:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The debate between vice presidential candidates Tim Walz and J.D. Vance drew a total audience of 38.9 million on eight major networks,” Bloomberg reports.

Deadline says that’s short of the initial viewership figures from the Kamala Harris-Mike Pence matchup in 2020.

Kevin McCarthy Tries to Close GOP’s Fundraising Gap

October 2, 2024 at 3:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Almost exactly a year after a small group of GOP lawmakers joined Democrats to remove Kevin McCarthy from the speakership, the California Republican is divvying out $14 million to help GOP candidates across the board,” NOTUS reports.

“The money is coming at a time when Republicans are trailing Democrats in fundraising as Election Day nears.”

Said McCarthy: “It’s a bigger hole than I thought would happen, so I want to help fill that hole. I think it’s a better opportunity to win seats this cycle than the last two, and we haven’t lost in a long time. I’ve got a lot invested in the people that I recruited. I want to help them be able to maintain; I think we got to go be more on offense. We got a great opportunity.”
