Some Thoughts on the Democratic Convention

August 22, 2024 at 11:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In the biggest speech of her life tonight, Kamala Harris will tell her life story, frame her race with Donald Trump and reclaim the banner of patriotism for Democrats. That’s been the thrust of the Democratic convention so far.

But I have other observations as well:

“Our primary focus is not to get out the vote. It’s to make sure they don’t cheat. Because we have all the votes we need.”

— Donald Trump, at a campaign rally in North Carolina.

It’s important to note that Trump is already declaring himself the winner… in August.

Pelosi Takes a Victory Lap

August 22, 2024 at 10:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) seems to be having the time of her life in Chicago,” the Washington Post reports.

“She is taking a victory lap of sorts after publicly pressuring President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 race, a move that has reinvigorated a beleaguered party. Since arriving here on Sunday, she has attended over 20 events — where she is often greeted like a hero — hosted over 500 guests at a Tuesday luncheon and stopped to take innumerable selfies.”

“California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) introduced himself during Tuesday night’s roll call by saying he’s from ‘the great state of Nancy Pelosi,’ with a beaming Pelosi standing right next to him.”

Judy Woodruff Backtracks on Trump Report

August 22, 2024 at 10:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Veteran PBS correspondent Judy Woodruff apologized on Wednesday for comments she had made on the air regarding former President Donald Trump and negotiations for a cease-fire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas,” Politico reports.

“Woodruff, during PBS’ Democratic national convention coverage on Monday, repeated a story she had read in Axios and Reuters that Trump had allegedly been encouraging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to put off peace talks until after the U.S. election in the belief that a deal could help Democrat Kamala Harris’ campaign.”

“But Woodruff said that she had not seen later reporting that the story had been denied by the Trump campaign and Israel.”

“The Kamala Harris campaign is launching its own Twitch channel where it will be streaming the vice president’s acceptance speech on Thursday,” Wired reports.

“The Twitch channel is part of the campaign’s broader strategy for engaging young and difficult to reach voters online.”

For the first time in more than a decade, the Democratic Party platform includes no mention of abolishing the death penalty, the HuffPost reports.

Thoughts About RFK Jr. Ending His Campaign

August 22, 2024 at 9:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced he’ll hold an event in Arizona tomorrow to discuss “the path forward.” Several reports suggest Kennedy will end his campaign and might endorse Donald Trump — something his wife opposes but that his running mate suggested was a possibility.

Here’s what I’m thinking:

Trump Disputes Report that Queen Found Him ‘Very Rude’

August 22, 2024 at 8:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump told the Daily Mail that claims in a new biography of Queen Elizabeth II that she found him “very rude” were the work of a “sleazebag” with a book to sell.

Trump said they had spent hours together and had warmed to each other during their meetings.

He added: “I heard I was her favorite president.”

The Backstory of Obama Mocking Trump

August 22, 2024 at 8:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speechwriter Jon Favreau explains how Barack Obama’s devastating mockery of Donald Trump’s penis made it into his final speech at the Democratic convention.

JD Vance Quietly Scored an $8 Million Book Deal

August 22, 2024 at 8:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sources tell Variety that back in 2017, Sen. J.D. Vance negotiated an $8 million deal for him to write a follow-up to Hillbilly Elegy.

Where Kamala Harris Gained Support Compared to Biden

August 22, 2024 at 7:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Cohn: “The top of the list, however, is led by an entirely different group: those with a ‘somewhat’ unfavorable view of Mr. Trump. In an extraordinary measure of Mr. Biden’s weakness, Mr. Trump actually led voters who had a somewhat unfavorable view of him back in May. Now, Ms. Harris has a wide lead among this group — at least for the moment.”

“And there’s one group that reveals Ms. Harris’s distinctive mark on the race: women. She didn’t simply make gains among young and nonwhite voters; she made outsize gains among young women.”

“Overall, Ms. Harris gained 11 points compared with Mr. Biden among women while she improved just three points among men.”

Trump to Rally at Same Arena Kamala Harris Used

August 22, 2024 at 7:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump will hit the campaign trail in Glendale on Friday, holding a rally at the same venue where Kamala Harris drew a crowd of 15,000 people earlier this month,” the Arizona Republic reports.

“It’s the perfect opportunity for a crowd size comparison.”

“The Republican former president is under pressure to upstage Harris by packing Desert Diamond Arena with a huge crowd. It’s a comparison of his own making: Trump has been disputing the size of Harris’s fired-up campaign crowds lately, even falsely claiming she used artificial intelligence because her sea of supporters was so large at a recent event.”

Model Predicts Close Election

August 22, 2024 at 7:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Alan Abramowitz: “This year’s version of the model shows Kamala Harris as a narrow favorite in both the popular vote and Electoral College, but her predicted margins are so small that the safest prediction we can make about the 2024 presidential election is that it is likely to be very close.”

RFK Jr.’s Wife Opposes Endorsing Trump

August 22, 2024 at 7:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A source in Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaign told The Hill that his wife, Cheryl Hines, does not want Kennedy to endorse Donald Trump.

Bill Clinton Sinks His Fangs Into Trump

August 22, 2024 at 7:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Bill Clinton served as Barack Obama’s economics explainer-in-chief in a memorable speech a dozen years ago at the Democratic convention in Charlotte,” Politico reports.

“On Wednesday, the Big Dog, a little older and his bark more faint, sunk his teeth into another favorite topic and savaged Donald Trump as a narcissist obsessed with himself.”

Shapiro on Fetterman

August 22, 2024 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) was asked by Bloomberg about his reported rivalry with Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA).

Said Shapiro: “You’ve got to ask Fetterman. Or I would say you should ask his spokesperson, but I think they’re not on the same page, either.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

August 22, 2024 at 7:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“We don’t have it. We are a polarized nation in a challenging time and despite all the things that are happening in this country, Donald Trump still has more support than he has had at any other point… It is going to come down to every single vote.”

— Harris campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon, quoted by Politico, on whether she has identified a clear path to victory.
