August 22, 2024 at 8:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Beyoncé is in Chicago, and getting ready to pop out for Kamala Harris on the final night of the Democratic National Convention,” TMZ reports.

“Multiple sources in the know tell us Queen Bey will be the big surprise performer as VP Harris officially accepts the Democratic party’s nomination to run for president.”

Trump Won’t Rule Out Separating Families

August 22, 2024 at 8:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump on Thursday said the cost to deport millions of undocumented immigrants is justified and would not rule out separating families made up of citizens and noncitizens,” NBC News reports.

Said Trump: “It’ll cost trillions of dollars to keep these people, and I’m talking about in particular starting with the criminals. That’s costing us a lot more than deporting. But we have no choice, regardless, we have no choice. We’re going to have to deport.”

“When pressed, Trump provided no details on how he would pay for his plan, which could cost billions of dollars to implement at scale.”

What Might Happen to RFK Jr.’s Support

August 22, 2024 at 8:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Silver: “In polls that test the ballot both with and without RFK, which our model diligently tracks as part of the adjustment it makes for his presence on the ballot, we find Trump losing an average of 3.0 points when Kennedy is included, and Harris losing 2.4 points.”

“In other words, he takes more of his votes than Trump (about 55 percent) than Harris (45 percent)… Given that he has just 4 percent of the vote now, having Trump regain 55 percent of those votes would only make a net difference of 0.4 points instead.”

“And there are some other complications. One is that polls that include RFK Jr. usually also include other third-party candidates, like Jill Stein and the Libertarian Chase Oliver. Some of RFK’s votes would probably go to those candidates instead, rather than one of the major party candidates.”

Take Control of Your News Consumption

You already know the problem with following the news today: the same story can look very different depending on where you read it — and some stories barely reach you at all because algorithms decide what you see.

That’s why I use and recommend Ground News.

It lets you compare coverage of the same story across the political spectrum, making it easy to see how the framing changes, what gets emphasized and what certain audiences may be missing.

I check it almost every day.

As newsrooms shrink and the media becomes more fragmented, the burden falls on us to make sure we’re seeing the whole picture. Ground News is one of the best tools I’ve found for doing that.</>

Democratic Convention Audience Remains Steady

August 22, 2024 at 7:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Democratic National Convention maintained a relatively steady audience for the third consecutive night, averaging 20.2M viewers Wednesday across 12 networks,” Deadline reports.

“That’s a loss of just a few hundred thousand compared to Night 2’s 20.8M, and it’s still just a bit higher than the 20M for the first night.”

“The DNC is still averaging an audience that is much larger than that for the Republican National Convention, which neared 18M viewers on its third night.”

How Kamala Harris Prepares for Big Moments

August 22, 2024 at 5:38 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The vice president knows the pressure is on for her convention speech, those close to her say,” NOTUS reports.

“But she has long had a vigorous process to face it.”

“People who have written for Harris or been part of the process before denote the arduous and sometimes daunting process that writing a speech for any principal, but certainly the vice president, requires. That’s in part because of the historic nature of her presidential bid and Republicans’ insistence on highlighting any small slipup or mistake.”

Harris Leads Trump Nationally

August 22, 2024 at 5:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Data for Progress poll shows Kamala Harris leading Donald Trump nationally in a multi-candidate field, 47% to 43%.

In a head-to-head match up, Harris leads 49% to 46%.

Key takeaway: “The voters who are undecided between Harris and Trump today are not the same voters who were undecided between Biden and Trump in May. Using the same methodological approach, updated to replace Biden with Harris, we are now collecting a smaller number of swing voters in our surveys, a sign that Harris has already captured a number of voters who were not certain to vote for Biden. “

Influencers Get Prime Access at Democratic Convention

August 22, 2024 at 4:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Vice President Kamala Harris taped three interviews this week at the Democratic National Convention, but none were with any of the 15,000 credentialed journalists here in Chicago. Instead, they were with social media influencers, including Vidya Gopalan, a North Carolina mom known to her 3.4 million TikTok followers as @queencitytrends,” CNN reports.

“Gopalan, who largely posts lifestyle content, asked Harris to reflect on their shared Indian heritage and her memories of spending time in India with her grandfather. The video, posted Tuesday, has more than 1.9 million views.”

“That engagement represented a recognition from the Harris campaign that reaching voters in the countdown to Election Day will require Democrats to go beyond a traditional media strategy and into new spaces.”

Arkansas Supreme Court Rejects Abortion Rights Initiative

August 22, 2024 at 4:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Arkansas Supreme Court blocked an abortion-rights initiative from appearing on the state’s ballot this fall, upholding a July decision by the secretary of state to reject the measure for not following rules related to paid signature gatherers,” NBC News reports.

“The decision means Arkansas will not be among the handful of states where voters will have the chance to weigh in on abortion-related measures on the November ballot, as the court’s majority opinion denies “further relief” to the group behind the proposed constitutional amendment.”

North Carolina Is Deadlocked

August 22, 2024 at 3:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new SurveyUSA poll in North Carolina shows Kamala Harris and Donald Trump tied among likely voters, 47% to 47%.

In the gubernatorial race, Josh Stein (D) leads Mark Robinson by 14 points, 48% to 34%.

Justices Reject GOP Attempt to Block 41K Arizona Voters

August 22, 2024 at 3:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a Republican push that could block more than 41,000 Arizona voters from casting ballots for president in the state that Democratic President Joe Biden won by less than 11,000 votes four years ago,” the AP reports.

“But in a 5-4 order, the high court allowed some enforcement of regulations barring people from voting if they don’t provide proof of citizenship when they register.”

Democrats Give Harris Nearly Unanimous Positive Ratings

August 22, 2024 at 3:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gallup: “Americans’ favorable rating of Harris has increased 13 percentage points since June, to 47%, with 93% of Democrats, 41% of independents and 5% of Republicans holding positive opinions of her.”

“The vice president’s job approval rating is also now 47%, up seven points from the previous reading in December 2023.”

Harris Unleashed a Wave of New Donors

August 22, 2024 at 2:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Vice President Kamala Harris activated a flood of Democratic donors who had been on the sidelines, new data shows: More people donated to her campaign in its first 10 days than in the entire 15 months of President Joe Biden’s,” Politico reports.

“And most of the donors were new not only to the campaign but to giving to any Democrats this cycle.”

“Harris’ campaign and affiliated joint fundraising committees received contributions from nearly 2.3 million individual donors from July 21, when Biden dropped out of the race, through July 31.”

This is simply an extraordinary data point.

Jeffries Says Democrats Are ‘Inside the Red Zone’

August 22, 2024 at 1:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said House Democrats are on the brink of taking back the majority, arguing the party is “inside the red zone” of snatching four seats from Republicans on Election Day, Punchbowl News reports.

Said Jeffries: “The road to the majority, in many ways, rests in our two states, in New York and in California. We are only four seats short. We’re inside the red zone, inside the 20-yard line. We’re inside the five-yard line. We can see the end zone, and California and New York can get us over the finish line. Get us over the finish line.”

Trump Turned Down Intelligence Briefings

August 22, 2024 at 1:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump told the Daily Mail he would not be getting intelligence briefings as the Republican nominee for president for fear of being accused of leaking classified information.

Said Trump: “I don’t want them, because, number one, I know what’s happening. It’s very easy to see what’s happening.”

He added: “We have a Marxist that’s going to try and be president, and this country is not ready for a Marxist or a communist president, and that’s what she is… So I don’t want that, because as soon as I get that, they’ll say that I leaked it.”

Greg Abbott Sent No Migrant Buses Last Month

August 22, 2024 at 1:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Texas Gov. Greg Abbott did not send a single bus full of migrants out of the state in July, despite his vow at the Republican National Convention on July 17 to keep sending buses north until the border is ‘secure,'” NBC News reports.

“In July 2023, Abbott sent 95 buses with 4,281 migrants to cities around the country… This July, he sent zero.”
