Quote of the Day

September 27, 2026 · 6:19 am ET · Leave a Comment

“If folks have been stealing from the American people, shortchanging the American people or screwing over the American people, we are going to hold the crooks accountable.”

— House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, quoted by the Associated Press.

House Democrats Plan Vast Oversight of Trump

September 27, 2026 · 6:18 am ET · Leave a Comment

“House Democrats are preparing a vast oversight agenda, with investigations of President Donald Trump, his family and his administration if the party sweeps control of the chamber from Republicans in the November elections,” the Associated Press reports.

“The undertaking is as robust as it is daunting, spanning several House committees. With majority power comes bigger budgets and staff, and the ability to investigate, subpoena and potentially course-correct what the Democrats say are widespread corruption and abuses of power. Impeachment of the Republican president and Cabinet officials is not off the table.”

MAGA Loyalists Don’t See an Affordability Problem

September 27, 2026 · 6:13 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Not everyone thinks there’s an affordability crisis,” Politico reports.

”While many Americans say the cost of living is the top issue facing the U.S. more than any other, President Donald Trump’s MAGA base does not always agree, according to a new analysis of The Politico Poll. Just 28 percent of voters who self-identify as part of the MAGA movement say expenses have become less affordable since Trump took office.”

“In fact, MAGA voters are more likely to say things have gotten better rather than worse.”

White House Claim of $250 Billion in Fraud Questionable

September 27, 2026 · 5:40 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Since the White House formed a task force in March intended to combat fraud, top administration officials have repeatedly heralded its work, pointing to huge amounts of recovered payments and graft stopped in its tracks,” the New York Times reports.

Said Vice President JD Vance: “We found $250 billion of fraud just since the president made me the fraud czar.”

“Yet some of the numbers Mr. Vance and his task force have promoted are overstated or lack specificity, and rely on temporary pauses in funding as well as cases and actions that long predated President Trump’s second term… The task force also appears to be relying on claims of fraud that could not be verified or leaning on allegations of fraud that are being prematurely included.”

Trump’s War Drags Down Republicans in Midterms

September 27, 2026 · 5:38 am ET · Leave a Comment

“President Trump warned in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly in recent days that he might ‘annihilate’ Iran, a growing number of Republicans were scrambling to find distance from a costly war that has swelled into a midterm crisis for the party,” the New York Times reports.

“The split screen showed how Mr. Trump and his party’s battleground candidates are increasingly at odds as the November elections approach. With no clear resolution in sight, the war has sent the prices of gasoline, diesel and heating oil upward, and cost increases have spilled across the economy. Mortgage rates have also climbed to seven percent, squeezing prospective homeowners already struggling with inflation.”

“While Mr. Trump is talking about escalating the war if he cannot strike a deal with Iran, Republicans in competitive races are losing patience with the fighting.”

GOP Election Outlook Goes From Bad to ‘Craptastic’

September 26, 2026 · 10:33 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“President Trump told voters to pretend he’s on the ballot. Apparently they’re listening: Republicans coast to coast are getting pulled under by a violent undertow fueled by Trump’s unpopularity,” Axios reports.

“It’s looked bad for Republicans all year, but this week felt different — like the political environment was disintegrating in real time, one ominous data point after another.”

”Most worrisome for the GOP, there’s virtually no chance the war ends, inflation cools, interest rates fall, consumer confidence rises, and economic optimism surges before the Nov. 3 election.”

September 26, 2026 · 10:29 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Two veteran FBI agents overseeing counterterrorism operations in the nation’s capital have been removed from their jobs and reassigned over the handling of an investigation involving Katie Miller, the conservative podcaster and wife of senior White House adviser Stephen Miller,” CNN reports.

“Michael Burgwald, the special agent in charge of counterterrorism matters at the FBI’s Washington Field Office, and his deputy, Courtland Rae, were ousted from their positions by bureau leadership after investigators determined that allegedly harassing phone calls Katie Miller received from unknown individuals did not warrant further investigation.”

JD Vance Translates Trump for Skeptical GOP

September 26, 2026 · 9:47 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“The midterms are approaching and the vice president is Vance-splaining,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“JD Vance is smoothing the harder edges of President Trump’s words, or expanding on them, as he reaches out to dissatisfied conservatives and urges them to stick with Republicans in the midterms.”

Trump Turns On Florida Republican

“President Donald Trump on Saturday escalated his criticism of Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL), amplifying a series of social media posts attacking the Florida Republican and, in multiple instances, calling for her replacement ahead of her election in just over a month,” Politico reports.

TV Networks to Resume Trump Coverage

September 26, 2026 · 8:37 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“The major networks are set to resume their collective television coverage of President Trump on Sunday, even though the White House blocked CNN from participating in the TV pool over the weekend,” the New York Times reports.

“Throughout the past week, the quintet had suspended the TV pool in an effort to force the administration to reinstate CNN, after Mr. Trump barred its journalists from the White House grounds. The networks went so far as to refuse to air footage of portions of Mr. Trump’s summit with China’s top leader, Xi Jinping.”

“But under a tentative plan that began taking shape late Friday, the other four networks would return to performing pool duties… Each time that CNN comes up in the pool rotation, the group of networks will decide whether to provide a substitute crew.”

America’s Farmers Are Rethinking Their Loyalty to the GOP

September 26, 2026 · 5:19 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“With just over a month to go until midterm elections, Republicans are facing the worst political environment in farm country in decades,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Tariffs and high prices for diesel, gas and fertilizer because of the war in Iran, along with President Trump’s plans to import more beef, have soured the moods of America’s farmers and ranchers, giving an opening for Democrats in what are typically solid red states.”

“Trump’s trade war with China halted soybean exports, depressing prices for last year’s crop and costing farmers billions of dollars. Tariffs have also made farm equipment more expensive.”

Lawmakers Slam Trump’s Move to Cancel Funding

September 26, 2026 · 3:58 pm ET · Leave a Comment

“Lawmakers in both parties blasted a plan by President Donald Trump to claw back more than $800 million in congressionally approved spending across the government, saying the president had no right to defy Congress in how he directs federal funding,” the Washington Post reports.

“The White House late Friday said it was taking a legally contested move to cut funding at federal agencies for a range of programs that direct government services toward immigrants, minority groups, climate change programs and other issues. It was the latest bid by the Trump administration to assert sweeping control over the government and to trim congressional powers.”

NBC News: Lawmakers slam Trump’s “unlawful” move to cut $810 million in federal funds.
