What Happened to Michael Flynn?

July 8, 2022 at 11:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Barton Gellman: “He has baffled old comrades with his transformation since being fired as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014. He led chants to lock up Hillary Clinton in 2016. In 2020, he posted a video of himself taking an oath associated with QAnon. He has endorsed crackpot fabrications of the extreme right: that Italy used military satellites to switch votes from Trump to Biden in 2020, that Covid-19 was a hoax perpetrated by a malevolent global elite, that the vaccine infused recipients with microchips designed for mind control.”

“Has Flynn always been susceptible to paranoid conspiracies? Or did something happen along the way that fundamentally shifted his relationship to reality? In recent conversations with the former general’s close associates, some for attribution and some not, they offered a variety of theories.”

Steve Bannon’s Lawyer Asks to Leave Case

July 8, 2022 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A lawyer for Steve Bannon is seeking to withdraw from representing the adviser to former President Donald Trump in his criminal contempt case, citing the possibility of being called as a witness at trial,” Reuters reports.

“Bannon was charged last year with two counts of contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena issued by a House of Representatives committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters. Bannon has refused to provide testimony or documents, citing Trump’s claim – rejected by other courts – that the material is protected under a legal doctrine called executive privilege.”

July 8, 2022 at 10:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Georgia Republican Senate nominee Herschel Walker was once a ‘partner’ and ‘spokesman’ for a subsidiary of an energy company, Just Energy, which was repeatedly targeted by states’ attorneys general and utility agencies over allegedly deceptive practices,” CNN reports.

“Though much of Walker’s business record — and lawsuits and false claims around it — have been widely covered, his ties to Just Energy have not been scrutinized.”

The Washington Post reports the court also ruled that voters could not give their completed absentee ballots to others to return on their behalf, a practice disparaged as “ballot harvesting.”

July 8, 2022 at 9:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New Yorker writer Ken Auletta has a new biography about Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced movie executive and sexual predator, but he tells the New York Times the most evil person he ever met was Roy Cohn: “He was the worst human being I’ve ever met. No one even close.”

Roy Cohn once said Donald Trump called him 15 to 20 times a day.

Joe Biden and Boris Johnson’s Relationship Wasn’t Special

July 8, 2022 at 9:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The so-called special relationship that binds the United States and the United Kingdom has survived wars, Donald Trump and Brexit. It will survive the departure of Boris Johnson. It might even improve. And if his no-namecheck statement on the matter is any indication, President Joe Biden is ready to move on.”

“Outwardly, U.S. officials are playing it cool even as the resignation has rattled the U.K. If the clamor surrounding Johnson’s myriad scandals fades and a more solid prime minister emerges, that could work to Washington’s benefit.”

“Employers hired across industries, with government the only major category to shed jobs.”

CNN: “The unemployment rate held steady at 3.6%, still close to the 52-year low last reached in the months before the pandemic hit.”

Ducey Defies Trump In Arizona Governor’s Race

July 8, 2022 at 9:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In a last major test of Donald Trump’s Republican power this year, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) endorsed a potential successor who’s going up against a candidate backed by the former president,” NBC News reports.

“Ducey’s defiance of Trump in supporting Karrin Taylor Robson (R) over Kari Lake (R) marks the third swing-state governor’s race — following primaries in Georgia and Pennsylvania — in which Republican establishment figures have resisted Trump and his preferred candidates.”

Last year, 62% of Republicans called the incident a riot. Now, just 45% do. Similarly, 33% of Republicans last summer said it was appropriate to describe the incident as an insurrection, but only 13% say the same today.

Meanwhile, 61% of Republicans see the incident as a “legitimate protest.”

One Million Gun Background Checks Not Finished on Time

July 8, 2022 at 6:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“There were over 1 million opportunities for someone to buy a gun from a licensed dealer without a completed background check in 2020 and 2021,“ NBC News reports.

“In all, 1,002,274 background checks — or 4.2 percent — took longer than three business days in 2020 and 2021, a higher share than any other period since at least 2014… After the third business day, federal law allows dealers to sell weapons while the background check is still pending, which potentially puts weapons in the hands of people who can’t legally own a gun because of mental illness or their criminal history.”

Biden to Sign Order on Abortion Access

July 8, 2022 at 6:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Joe Biden will take executive action Friday to protect access to abortion, as he faces mounting pressure from fellow Democrats to be more forceful on the subject after the Supreme Court ended a constitutional right to the procedure two weeks ago,” the AP reports.

“The actions he was expected to outline are intended to try to mitigate some potential penalties women seeking abortion may face after the ruling, but are limited in their ability to safeguard access to abortion nationwide.“

Washington Post: “In a nod to some of the legal battles that could come, Biden is also directing the attorney general and the White House counsel to convene private pro bono attorneys, bar associations, and public interest organizations to encourage legal representation for those seeking or offering reproductive health services.”
