What Will Turnout Look Like in 2022 Without Trump?

March 19, 2021 at 6:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Amy Walter: “What’s also interesting about 2022 is that for the first time in 12-years, the person who sits in the White House does not enjoy a cult of personality. Barack Obama was the first Black president who motivated a generation of younger voters and voters of color. Donald Trump energized his cohort of voters — some of them former Obama voters — with his ‘Make America Great Again’ appeal.”

“Both could draw big crowds and celebrity endorsements. But, they could not transfer their ‘coalition’ to any other candidate — especially down-ballot candidates in the midterm elections. Despite President Obama’s admonishment of supporters at his rallies (‘don’t boo, vote,’ he often told them), they failed to do that in midterms, which cost Democrats the House in 2010 and the Senate in 2014. President Trump’s post-election rallies in Georgia weren’t effective in saving the Senate.”

Louisiana’s Two Special Elections Are Worth Watching

March 19, 2021 at 6:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

FiveThirtyEight: “Always a state that marches to its own beat, Louisiana holds elections a little differently than most (as the Saturday election date might imply): Rather than pitting a Republican against a Democrat, the two elections are what’s known as jungle primaries, where all candidates, regardless of party, run on the same ballot. If no candidate receives a majority of the vote, the top two finishers will advance to a runoff election on April 24.”

“So the big questions going into Saturday’s elections are which wing of the Democratic Party will come out on top in the 2nd — and whether a second round of voting will even be necessary in the 5th.”

“Bealsey lost a close election for chief justice in 2020, losing to Republican Paul Newby by 401 votes. It was the third statewide election for Beasley, who won a seat on the court of appeals in 2008. She was appointed to the state Supreme Court in 2012 and then won her seat in 2014.”

Cuomo Accuser Raises New Claims of Harassment

March 18, 2021 at 11:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Lindsey Boyland, the first woman to accuse Gov. Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment, gave an extensive interview to Ronan Farrow in the New Yorker:

“When the dog jumped up and down near her, Boylan said, she reached out to calm him, and then backed away. Cuomo, she said, joked that if he were a dog, he would try to ‘mount’ her as well.”

Interesting detail: Cuomo hung a dartboard with a photo of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on it for entertainment during a pool party at the governor’s mansion.

Reuters: “Mexico will receive 2.5 million does of the vaccine and Canada will receive 1.5 million doses … The deal to share the vaccine, which is still being finalized, does not affect President Joe Biden’s plans to have vaccine available for all adults in the United States by the end of May.”

March 18, 2021 at 9:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) blocked an attempt by Democrats to bring up a bill that would stop debt collectors from garnishing stimulus checks, a provision which had previously been deemed ineligible under budget reconciliation rules, the Huffington Post reports.

However, Toomey and the vast majority of Senate Republicans voted in favor of such a provision in the previous Covid relief that passed in December.

As Republicans Pull Out, Progressives Step In

March 18, 2021 at 9:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Greg Sargent: “The overwhelming takeaway here is that Biden and the White House are working hard to keep things running smoothly with the party’s left. Meanwhile, Biden and Democratic leaders have largely adopted the progressive reading of the folly of chasing bipartisanship for its own sake.”

“In short, they are talking to the left, while largely accepting that the GOP is essentially cutting itself out of the conversation about how to address the country’s major challenges.”

Bush Was ‘Disgusted’ by Capitol Insurrection

March 18, 2021 at 8:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former President George W. Bush said the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol left him ‘disgusted’ and “disturbed” – yet still optimistic about the resilience of American democracy,” the Dallas Morning News reports.

Said Bush: “I was disgusted. … I was sick to my stomach, to see our nation’s Capitol being stormed by hostile forces, and it really disturbed me. I’m still disturbed when I think about it, and it undermines the rule of law.”

When asked if he thought Democrats stole the election, Bush replied: “No. All elections have some kind of improprieties… The results of this election, though, were confirmed when Joe Biden got inaugurated as president… He’s off to a good start, it looks like, and hopefully this anger will work its way out of the system.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

March 18, 2021 at 8:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Who you nominate matters. It’s less of an issue of, how did you vote on this bill, or are you too conservative. Are you someone who goes out there and proactively scares voters away from you who otherwise might have supported you?”

— GOP operative Doug Heye, quoted by McClatchy, on the lesson he learned from the Tea Party candidates who were nominated that cycle.

Who Will Be California’s Next Attorney General?

March 18, 2021 at 7:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

San Francisco Chronicle: “Lobbying for the attorney general’s job has been intense, with many advocacy groups seeking representation for California’s marginalized communities. Following a rise in anti-Asian American violence during the coronavirus pandemic, officials appealed this week for Newsom to select an Asian American attorney general, such as Democratic Assembly Member Rob Bonta of Alameda, who could pursue policies to combat racial bias and hate crimes.”

“LGBT rights groups have pushed for Equality California executive director Rick Chavez Zbur, who would be California’s first openly gay attorney general. Black officials have rallied behind Diana Becton, Contra Costa County’s district attorney, who is African American. Female lawmakers have asked Newsom to consider a list of women, including state Sen. Anna Caballero (D).”

“Other top contenders include Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, a longtime ally of Newsom’s who has worked closely with the governor on homelessness issues, and Rep. Adam Schiff (D), whose bid has been boosted by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.”

McCarthy Tries to Rewrite History

March 18, 2021 at 7:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy tried to rewrite history on Thursday by claiming that he was not involved in former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the election in a heated exchange during a news briefing,” CNN reports.

“McCarthy’s explanation flies in the face of reality. Trump tried to pressure Congress to overturn the election and McCarthy raised no concerns about it. He also backed a Texas lawsuit to invalidate millions of votes, and ultimately voted in favor of overturning the election results of two states during votes that took place after the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol.”
