FBI Probes Cuomo Deal to Shield Nursing Homes

March 18, 2021 at 6:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“FBI investigators probing the Cuomo administration’s handling of nursing homes during the pandemic last spring are seeking information about a state budget provision that gave operators legal immunity,” The City reports.

“In recent weeks, FBI officials have been looking to interview members of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s staff and other state officials about the eleventh-hour addition to the state budget last March… The measure granted nursing homes and hospitals broad legal protections against lawsuits and criminal liability for care provided to residents and patients during the pandemic.”

Republicans Suddenly See Mean Tweets as Disqualifying

March 18, 2021 at 6:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

J.M. Rieger: “For four years, Republicans had a go-to response for former president Donald Trump’s tweets: They hadn’t seen them, and they didn’t want reporters to tell them about them.”

“But over the past two months, many of these same Republicans have put such great stock in Twitter commentary that they have been citing old tweets as part of their reasoning for opposing President Biden’s nominees.”

21 States Sue to Revive Keystone XL

March 18, 2021 at 4:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Attorneys general from 21 states on Wednesday sued to overturn President Joe Biden’s cancellation of the contentious Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada.”

“Led by Ken Paxton of Texas and Austin Knudsen of Montana, the states said Biden had overstepped his authority when he revoked the permit for the Keystone pipeline on his first day in office.”

Is Joe Biden Radical?

March 18, 2021 at 3:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tim Miller: “Maybe if you’re still living in the ’90s. But according to polling analysis of his executive orders, pretty much all of them have majority support . . . except shutting down drilling in parts of Alaska and the keystone pipeline.”

“And the latest COVID bill, the American Rescue Plan, has overwhelming support, including from 4 in 10 Republican voters.”

“But not a single Republican in congress voted for it, so is that missing bipartisanship what makes Biden extreme and radical?”

Republicans Ditch Their Pre-Trump Orthodoxy

March 18, 2021 at 3:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “The era of small government is over. And it’s been over for a while now.”

“That’s the undeniable conclusion after House Republicans — in a secret-ballot vote on Wednesday — reversed their ban on earmarks for projects in spending bills that end up benefitting their congressional districts.”

“This GOP reversal on earmarks comes after congressional Republicans voted for trillions in spending to combat the coronavirus during the Trump presidency (though not during the Biden presidency), after Trump himself continues to support $2,000 stimulus checks, and after the GOP has essentially stopped messaging against Biden’s Covid-19 relief package.”

Cuomo Ducks Media Again

March 18, 2021 at 2:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo continued playing a game of duck and cover, yet again shutting out reporters from a purported news conference as his sexual harassment and nursing home scandals grow,” CNBC reports.

Quote of the Day

March 18, 2021 at 2:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I would talk ’til I fell over to make sure we don’t go to ballot harvesting and voting by mail without ID. I would talk ’til I fell over to make sure that the Equality Act doesn’t become law, destroying the difference between a man and woman in our law.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), quoted by The Hill, threatening to make full use of the so-called “talking filibuster” if Democrats reform the Senate procedural move.

The Known Unknowns About the 2024 Election

March 18, 2021 at 2:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Bernstein: “The folks over at FiveThirtyEight ran their first 2024 Republican presidential nomination mock draft last week. They were careful to label it ‘way too early.’ In a normal presidential-election cycle, I would have been quick to run an item about how that wasn’t really true. Indeed, in a normal presidential-election cycle, I would have already written four months ago that the 2024 contest was already underway.”

“This is not a normal nomination cycle. Or, to be more accurate: These are not normal nomination cycles.”

“We really have no idea whether either the Republican or the Democratic nominations will be competitive.”

Biden Taps Bill Nelson to Lead NASA

March 18, 2021 at 2:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Joe Biden is expected to nominate former Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) to lead NASA, settling on a longtime booster of the space program to lead the agency’s return to the moon, Politico reports.

No Favorite In Texas Special Election

March 18, 2021 at 2:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“With less than two months to go, nearly half of voters have not chosen a candidate in the upcoming special election in Texas’ 6th District,” according to new polling obtained by Inside Elections.

“The March 9-12 survey by Victoria Research found Republican Susan Wright, the widow of the late GOP Rep. Ron Wright, leading the field with 21%, followed by Sanchez with 17%. Republican state Rep. Jake Ellzey garnered 8%; Democrats Lydia Bean (a 2020 state House nominee and former professor at Baylor) and Shawn Lassiter (a nonprofit leader and former teacher) took 5% and 3%, respectively.”

“Texas conducts special elections via jungle primary, meaning that all candidates — there are 23 of them in this race — will appear together on the ballot. If no candidate wins a majority, then the top two best-performing candidates, regardless of party, advance to a runoff.”

Biden Does Little Outreach to GOP on Nominees

March 18, 2021 at 2:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Joe Biden campaigned for the presidency on his track record of bipartisanship and his strong alliances in the Senate, but the White House has gotten the majority of its Cabinet approved in the chamber by focusing primarily on Democratic votes,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

“Senate Republicans say there has been little outreach by the White House to win their votes on confirmations, potentially a missed opportunity to begin building relationships, particularly as Democrats look down the road at the future of the legislative filibuster.”

QAnon Thinks Fake Trump Is Advocating Vaccines

March 18, 2021 at 2:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Newsweek: “With Trump contradicting QAnon theories that the vaccine is dangerous and the coronavirus is a hoax, many of its supporters came up with ways to cope with the latest cognitive dissonance, including suggesting it was not actually Trump speaking to Fox.”

Said one QAnon supporter: “I just listen to it again and I have to agree it doesn’t really sound like him. Whoever it was was very good at imitating him though.”

Lawmakers Looking to Spend on Security

March 18, 2021 at 1:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Alarmed by a growing number of threats, harassment and scenes of violence at government buildings, lawmakers in both parties are seeking clarity from election agencies on whether they can spend campaign dollars and taxpayer money on security and personal protective equipment — everything from body armor to panic buttons at home.”

What Makes Biden’s Childcare Benefit Different

March 18, 2021 at 1:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

June Kreml: “Unlike most government aid programs, this new proposal isn’t aimed at people specifically because they’re poor. Instead, it’s aimed at those who do a certain kind of work: parenting.”

12 Republicans Voted Against Honoring Capitol Police

March 18, 2021 at 12:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A dozen Republicans voted against a resolution honoring U.S. Capitol police for their efforts to protect members of Congress during the insurrection on January 6,” The Guardian reports.

“The House voted 413 to 12 on Wednesday to award congressional gold medals, Congress’s ‘highest expression of national appreciation,’ to all members of the Capitol police force.”

“The Republicans who opposed this honor included Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Matt Gaetz of Florida and Thomas Massie of Kentucky.”

McConnell’s Filibuster Threats Aren’t That Scary

March 18, 2021 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

National Review: “Senator Mitch McConnell warned yesterday that if Democrats abolish the filibuster, Republicans would take advantage when they regain the majority. He listed right-to-work legislation, defunding of Planned Parenthood, and concealed-carry reciprocity as some items that a majority-Republican Senate would pass.”

“I’m reminded of the famous interrogation scene from The Dark Knight. As Batman subjects him to an increasingly brutal beating, the Joker laughs it off: ‘You have nothing – nothing to threaten me with.’”
