Trump Has Second Thoughts About Concession Video

January 8, 2021 at 4:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s most loyal supporters feel angry and betrayed over the Thursday video in which the president tried to distance himself from a pro-Trump riot in Congress, despite the president’s advisers assuring him he had not alienated too many of his fans,” the Daily Beast reports.

“Shortly after his White House video—in which a scripted President Trump acknowledged that a transition to a ‘new’ administration was underway, but stopped short of even admitting that he indeed lost fairly to his 2020 Democratic opponent—posted online, Trump started having second thoughts. Throughout the evening, the outgoing, increasingly authoritarian leader of the free world quizzed close advisers and White House officials about if he did the right thing, and if the reception from the public, the media, and his supporters was ‘good.’ … He asked if his supporters felt let down.

The Real Aim of Impeaching Trump Again

January 8, 2021 at 1:12 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

It appears House Democrats are intent on impeaching President Trump again, this time for his role in inciting a mob to take over the U.S. Capitol.

Assuming the vote takes place as soon as “mid-next week,” as Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA) suggested, the U.S. Senate would have to convene a trial immediately.

However, Trump’s first impeachment trial lasted four weeks before delivering a verdict. Trump only has 12 days left in his presidency.

That suggests the goal of impeaching Trump likely may not be his actual removal from office and could instead be targeted on preventing him from holding federal office in the future.

That’s could be appealing to enough Senate Republicans — some of whom are eyeing presidential bids in 2024 and would prefer he doesn’t run — to get the two-thirds necessary for conviction. That would require 17 Republicans to join every Democrats once Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff are sworn in.

January 8, 2021 at 12:43 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President-elect Joe Biden’s plans for a major new economic relief package boosting stimulus payments to $2,000 ran into possibly fatal opposition from his own party Friday as Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV.) said he would ‘absolutely not’ support a new round of checks,” the Washington Post reports.

“Manchin, a moderate who will hold great sway in a Senate split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans, made his views known even as the Biden team worked to develop a coronavirus relief package that would include new stimulus checks, extended unemployment benefits, and more.”
