Trump Says Powell’s Removal ‘Can’t Come Soon Enough’

April 17, 2025 at 7:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump blasted Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell on Thursday with the strongest suggestion yet of intentions to try to fire the nation’s most powerful economic policymaker,” Axios reports.

“Trump’s attack comes after Powell said that tariffs were likely to stoke inflation and slow economic growth.”

Politico: “There has long been speculation that Trump would try to remove Powell from his Fed position in what would be significant interference in an institution that has jealously guarded its independence. Powell has previously said that the president doesn’t have the authority to fire him.”

Wall Street Journal: “Trump has previously said he won’t seek to replace Powell before his term expires in May 2026.”

Trump Tariffs Sink Global Economy Outlook

April 17, 2025 at 7:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Global fund managers have turned startlingly pessimistic when it comes to the chances that the world will be able to withstand the effect of across-the-board U.S. tariffs — and they’re particularly bearish when it comes to the U.S. itself,” Axios reports.

Key takeaway: “49% of them said that a hard landing is now the most likely outcome for the global economy, up from 6% in February and 11% in March.”

Wall Street Journal: “In the past three months, economists have changed their outlook for the U.S. to slower growth, higher inflation and greater risk of recession. The changed consensus in The Wall Street Journal’s quarterly survey reflects President Trump’s trade war. Several economists noted frequent shifts in tariff policy have made their forecasts unusually uncertain.”

Religious Preferences Largely Stable Since 2020

April 17, 2025 at 7:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gallup: “In 2024, 45% of Americans identified as Protestant or nondenominational Christian, 21% as Catholic and 10% as another religion, with 22% not identifying with any religion. Those figures are each within one percentage point of their 2018-2020 levels.”

Fueling Political Wire, One Cup at a Time

Every morning before the sun’s up, I sit down to work on Political Wire with a cup of Trade Coffee beside me.

It’s become part of the ritual — opening the laptop, scanning the news, and taking that first sip of a roast matched perfectly to my taste. Trade connects me with small roasters across the country, delivering beans that are always fresh and far better than what you’ll find at the grocery store.

If you love coffee as much as I do, use this link to get a free bag of coffee and taste the difference for yourself.

Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez Electrify Democrats

April 17, 2025 at 6:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The biggest political rallies anywhere in America right now are being headlined by an 83-year-old senator in the twilight of his career and his 35-year-old protégée,” the New York Times reports.

“Those monster crowds — more than 200,000 people in all, according to organizers — have turned out to cheer on a fiery anti-Trump, anti-billionaire message from Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York during their ‘Fighting Oligarchy’ tour of Western states…”

“As Democrats search for a spark after being routed in November, the two progressives are providing the kindling, offering the party’s beaten-down base the fighting spirit it has been missing ever since President Trump returned to office.”

Playbook: “The question for Sanders and AOC is what comes next — aside from the massive fundraising the tour has helped trigger.”

Trump Threatens to Ban Harvard’s Foreign Students

April 17, 2025 at 6:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Department of Homeland Security sent Harvard a letter on Wednesday threatening to revoke its eligibility to enroll international students unless it submits information on international students’ disciplinary records and protest participation,” the Harvard Crimson reports.

Biden Spoke at Harvard in Private Study Group

April 17, 2025 at 6:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former President Joe Biden was slated to speak at Harvard’s Institute of Politics yesterday for an “off-the-record study group with his long-time adviser Mike Donilon,” the Harvard Crimson reports.

Playbook: “Biden’s presence on campus was kept extremely secretive: The IOP did not publicize the event, and only select students received invites the day before with very little detail. Essentially, the former president seems to have been smuggled in and out of the building. Very odd.”

The Cabinet Secretary Everyone Hates Isn’t Leaving

April 17, 2025 at 6:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“When President Donald Trump has decamped to Mar-a-Lago during his second term, there’s one Cabinet secretary who’s joined him every single time. It’s the same man that the president summons to his table for ice cream sundaes most Friday nights to gossip and replay the week; the same man who was his first call to float some outlandish ideas, including annexing the Panama Canal and creating a $5 million ‘gold card’ visa,” Politico reports.

“That man is Howard Lutnick. Yet talk to almost any Trump ally outside the White House and you’ll hear scant praise for the Commerce secretary. He’s brash and impulsive, catering to Trump’s worst instincts on tariffs that could jeopardize the economy, they whisper. His loud mouth is equally matched by his bad judgment, they steam. And he’s on the outs, his job hanging by a thread — or so the Trump orbit rumor mill goes.”

“But there’s more than a little wishful thinking among Lutnick’s detractors. While their knives have been out for Lutnick for months, some closest to the president say he’s not going anywhere — at least for now.”

Europe Seeks a Direct Line to Trump

April 17, 2025 at 6:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For European allies of the United States, President Trump’s White House is structured like a court: the gilded Oval Office a place for advisers, pals and courtiers, all awaiting the decrees of the president,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Trump is the ultimate decision maker, and far from a predictable one. So in the first three months of this Trump presidency, getting through to the president himself is the Europeans’ goal. Some have succeeded, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy, who is expected to meet him at the White House on Thursday.”

“What is most confusing, European officials say, is that the most efficient interlocutors are not traditional diplomats working through institutions, but special envoys and advisers like Elon Musk. And it is never quite clear whether the messages get through to Mr. Trump, even if he is more likely to trust an old friend like Steve Witkoff, whom he has installed as a foreign policy negotiator, over the civil servants he disdains.”

China Pivots from U.S. to Canada for More Oil

April 16, 2025 at 10:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Chinese refiners are importing record amounts of Canadian crude after slashing purchases of US oil by roughly 90% amid escalating trade tensions,” Bloomberg reports.

Trump Waved Off Israeli Strike

April 16, 2025 at 10:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Israel had planned to strike Iranian nuclear sites as soon as next month but was waved off by President Trump in recent weeks in favor of negotiating a deal with Tehran to limit its nuclear program,“ the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Trump made his decision after months of internal debate over whether to pursue diplomacy or support Israel in seeking to set back Iran’s ability to build a bomb, at a time when Iran has been weakened militarily and economically.”

Rahm Emanuel Warned the White House Biden Can’t Run

April 16, 2025 at 9:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rahm Emanuel told Tara Palmeri that he spoke to White House officials and others in the Democratic party about his concerns about Joe Biden running for re-election.

Said Emanuel: “I let people know that could have an influence on that decision.”

He added: “I’ve myself, expressed my view, and I’ve been clear, I was clear. From Tokyo, I expressed myself to the people that were in important places about the importance. And I told them in no uncertain terms of what I thought the consequences were heading down this. We’ll leave it there.”

Federal Workers Are Facing a New Reality

April 16, 2025 at 7:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Elaine Godfrey: “‘At least 50 percent of my time is devoted to trying to deal with the repercussions, the shock’ of having hundreds of colleagues suddenly disappear, including many researchers who oversaw studies, one senior National Institutes of Health scientist based in Bethesda, Maryland, told me.”

“What outside observers haven’t yet grasped, he and other federal employees said, is just how far things have spiraled out of control.”

IRS Making Plans to Rescind Harvard’s Tax Exempt Status

April 16, 2025 at 5:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Internal Revenue Service is making plans to rescind the tax-exempt status of Harvard University, which would be an extraordinary step of retaliation as the Trump administration seeks to turn up pressure on the university that has defied its demands to change its hiring and other practices,” CNN reports.

“A final decision on rescinding the university’s tax exemption is expected soon.”

Former Trump Official Targeted Vows to Fight

April 16, 2025 at 5:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A former top Trump administration official targeted with a federal investigation by President Trump said he would fight back against what he called an unprecedented campaign by the government to punish dissent,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Chris Krebs, one of Trump’s top cybersecurity officials in his first term, will resign from a leading security firm to more freely challenge the White House.”

They Never Thought Trump Would Have Them Deported

April 16, 2025 at 5:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Caitlin Dickerson: “Many Trump supporters, including undocumented immigrants themselves, took to heart Trump’s repeated assurances that the administration would put the emphasis squarely on people who clearly threatened public safety.”

“That hasn’t happened. In the face of immense pressure to hit the president’s stated goals for arrests and deportations, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials are arresting people who, polling suggests, most Americans believe should be left alone, if not offered a pathway to legal residency after completing an application process.”

Trump Plans $40 Billion Cut in Health Programs

April 16, 2025 at 4:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration is seeking to deeply slash budgets for federal health programs, a roughly one-third cut in discretionary spending by the Department of Health and Human Services,” the Washington Post reports.

Fed Chair Warns of ‘Challenging Scenario’

April 16, 2025 at 4:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell warned that the central bank could have less flexibility to quickly cushion the economy from the fallout of President Trump’s trade war, sending stocks down on Wednesday,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Powell said he saw a ‘strong likelihood’ that consumers would face higher prices and that the economy would see higher unemployment as a result of tariffs in the short run.”

“This would create a ‘challenging scenario’ for the central bank because anything it does with interest rates to address inflationary pressures could worsen unemployment, and vice versa.”

In short, he’s forecasting a period of stagflation.

Donald Trump’s Approval Is Sliding

April 16, 2025 at 4:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump remains deeply unpopular.

At this point in his term, Trump’s net approval rating is more than 20 points worse than Joe Biden’s—who, until now, held the distinction of being the least popular new president in modern history aside from Trump himself during his first go-round.

And there are finally some signs of resistance.

Several Republicans in Congress are backing legislation to curb Trump’s unilateral tariff authority. Elite universities like Harvard, Princeton and Cornell are pushing back rather than capitulating to his demands. Even some major law firms have chosen to challenge him rather than bend the knee.

This is no coincidence.

As Trump’s approval continues to fall, institutional resistance grows. The less people like him, the easier it becomes to justify saying no.

The threat to American democracy is very real. Each day’s headlines deliver a fresh reminders that the republic is under attack.

But if enough people stand firm, tyranny won’t win.
