What About Trump’s Gaffes?

August 14, 2019 at 8:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read correctly points out that if Joe Biden’s gaffes are news, why wasn’t there the same level of discussion on what President Trump said yesterday in Pennsylvania?

  • “That’s a lot of people back there for a — like an 11 o’clock speech. That’s a lot of people. That’s a lot.” (In fact, the speech was after 2:00 pm ET.)
  • “This Shell petrochemical plant in Beaver County, Pennsylvania — I did very well here. We did very well. How many points did we win by? Does anybody know?  I’ll tell you.  Isn’t it, I think, 28 points? That’s a lot.” (Trump won Beaver County by 19 points in 2016.)
  • “I got sued on a thing called ‘emoluments.’ Emoluments. You ever hear the word?  Nobody ever heard of it before. They went back. Now, nobody looks at Obama getting $60 million for a book.” (Obama signed his book deal in 2017, after leaving office.)

August 14, 2019 at 8:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In a frantic effort to meet the donor threshold for the next Democratic debate, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) is now offering a t-shirt in exchange for a $1 donation.

Said Abrams: “I would be honored to be considered by any nominee.”

Yield Curve Inverts, Triggering Recession Warning

August 14, 2019 at 7:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note on Wednesday broke below the 2-year rate, an odd bond market phenomenon that has been a reliable, albeit early, indicator for economic recessions. The yield on U.S. 30-year bond fell to a new all-time low, dropping past its prior record notch in summer 2016,” CNBC reports.

“The moves shows increasing worries about the global economy as investors rush into safe haven assets.”

“A recession occurs, on average, 22 months following such an inversion.”

Cuccinelli Says Statue Of Liberty Was About Europeans

August 14, 2019 at 7:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Ken Cuccinelli, the Trump administration’s acting head of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, reinforced his controversial interpretation of the inscription on the Statue of Liberty ― this time giving it a racist twist,” the HuffPost reports.

“CNN journalist Erin Burnett was asking Cuccinelli about his earlier interview with NPR, in which he reworded the Emma Lazarus poem ‘The New Colossus,’ saying: ‘Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet, and who will not become a public charge.'”

Asked Burnett: “‘Wretched,’ ‘poor,’ refuse’ – right? That’s what the poem says America is supposed to stand for. So what do you think America stands for?”

Said Cuccinelli: “Well, of course, that poem was referring back to people coming from Europe, where they had class-based societies, where people were considered wretched if they weren’t in the right class.”

Biden Still Holds Big Lead In South Carolina

August 14, 2019 at 7:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Charleston Post & Courier poll in South Carolina finds Joe Biden leading the Democratic field with 36%, followed by Elizabeth Warren at 17%, Bernie Sanders at 16%, Kamala Harris at 12%, Pete Buttigieg at 5% and Cory Booker at 4%.

Trump Backs Off Plans to Commute Blagojevich Sentence

August 14, 2019 at 7:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump was on the cusp of commuting former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s (D) sentence late last week, multiple sources said. But then Republican members of Illinois’ congressional delegation began flooding the White House with calls,” CNN reports.

“Now, Trump appears to have backed off his plans to commute Blagojevich’s sentence.”

Duncan Hunter’s Trial Pushed to 2020

August 14, 2019 at 7:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Duncan Hunter’s trial on charges that he improperly spent hundreds of thousands in campaign funds on lavish vacations, golf outings and entertainment has been moved to Jan. 14, Roll Call reports.

O’Rourke Resumes Presidential Campaign

August 14, 2019 at 7:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “For more than a week since the shooting, O’Rourke served as a passionate voice for his border city and for immigrants more generally, with his wrenching criticism of President Donald Trump. And if O’Rourke had wanted to run for Senate, this would have been the time to make the jump — summoned home by tragedy, not limping back amid a sputtering campaign.”

“But O’Rourke has never expressed interest in running for Senate this year, after his near-miss loss to Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018. The El Paso massacre only redoubled his resolve to campaign against Trump, according to sources close to his campaign, while persistent calls for him to run for Senate exasperated his supporters.”

Trump Talking to Senators About Gun Control

August 14, 2019 at 6:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Trump on Sunday telephoned Senator Christopher S. Murphy, a Democrat who has been one of the leading voices in Congress for gun control, an indication that the president is interested in pursuing legislation. Earlier in the week, Mr. Murphy had contacted the White House to indicate that he was willing to work with Mr. Trump on the issue, which prompted the call.”

“The conversation was positive, with Mr. Trump indicating that he was serious about persuading Republicans to act, according to officials familiar with their discussion. And the two agreed to set up a staff-level dialogue this week between their offices and those of Senators Patrick J. Toomey, Republican of Pennsylvania, and Joe Manchin III, Democrat of West Virginia, who are working feverishly to revive the background check legislation they wrote after the Sandy Hook massacre.”

Playbook: “We spoke to a number of people on the Hill and in the White House who were hoping this effort is headquartered in the legislative affairs shop, and not captained by the gaggle of other White House officials who try to insert themselves into legislative issues.”

Trump Takes Credit for Plant Announced Under Obama

August 13, 2019 at 9:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump sought to take credit Tuesday for a major manufacturing complex in western Pennsylvania in his latest effort to reinvigorate the Rust Belt support that sent him to the White House. He was cheered on by fluorescent-vest-clad workers who were paid to attend by Shell, their employer, which is building the facility,” the AP reports.

Said Trump: “This would have never happened without me and us.”

“Despite Trump’s claims, Shell announced its plans to build the complex in 2012, midway through President Barack Obama’s term in the White House.”

Attacking Trump Didn’t Work In 2016

August 13, 2019 at 8:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Each contender for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination is trying to distinguish himself or herself as the strongest candidate to take on the president. In doing so, the candidates have been eager to be seen as speaking plain truth to what they frame as venal power on issues of race, character and everything else.”

“But if the steady stream of ad hominem attacks is failing to shock, awe or drive the news, it is in part because there is little left in terms of criticism of Mr. Trump that has not already been volleyed — by his own team.”

GOP Donors Told to Wait as Pompeo Mulls Senate Bid

August 13, 2019 at 6:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republican political donors have been told to hold off contributing to the 2020 U.S. Senate race in Kansas in the expectation that Secretary of State Michael Pompeo may decide to run,” Bloomberg reports.

“A Pompeo ally has been advising potential contributors to wait until after the secretary of state makes his decision, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing a private message communicated to donors. The top U.S. diplomat and former CIA director, who served as a congressman in Kansas’s 4th district from 2011-2017, has until June to enter the race.”

Hickenlooper Mulling Run for Senate

August 13, 2019 at 6:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) “is in discussions about ending his presidential bid and entering the race for his state’s Republican-held Senate seat, potentially giving Democrats a strong candidate in a race they must win to have hopes of retaking the chamber in 2021,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Hickenlooper, who is mired at the bottom of public polling of the presidential race, hopped into Sen. Michael Bennet’s car on Friday night in this Northern Iowa town to discuss his impending decision, said Democrats familiar with the discussion.”

How the Media Helps Trump Gaslight Everyone

August 13, 2019 at 6:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Philip Bump: “In the first phase, he does or says something that any unbiased observer would categorize as controversial. This is generally something geared toward embarrassing or undermining a perceived political opponent.”

“In the second phase, he tells media outlets that they’re misunderstanding his true intent, which was something less objectionable. Sometimes doing so demands stuffing some awfully big claims into some awfully small boxes, but Trump and his supporters are generally content if he at least gives it a shot.”

“This tactic is well-designed for leveraging the media. With decades of inculcated assumptions about the good faith of the president, reporters find themselves forced into declaring that, while most people would agree that the president’s statement was problematic, he insists that it is actually not problematic for whatever reason. His supporters embrace the original intent and meaning of what Trump does, and the media has to leave it there. Works great, at least for him.”

Romney’s 2012 Bid Offers Lessons for Biden

August 13, 2019 at 5:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Balz: “Romney was the disrespected front-runner in the 2012 Republican field. He could be awkward as a candidate and paid a price for it in the coverage of his campaign. But as with Biden, he led in most — not all — surveys ahead of the primaries and caucuses.”

“Romney was running in a Republican Party that was absorbing the impact of a rising and noisy tea party movement. He was described as out of step with a party that was moving swiftly to the right. He presented himself as a conservative, and his positions were generally conservative, including on immigration. But many conservatives regarded him with suspicion.”

“Biden finds himself in a somewhat similar situation today. The Democratic Party has moved to the left since he became vice president under President Barack Obama. As a senator, Biden was in what was then the party’s liberal wing.”

Stacey Abrams to Launch Voter Protection Effort

August 13, 2019 at 5:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The effort, expected to cost between $4 million and $5 million, will target 20 states, most of them battlegrounds in the Midwest and Southeast, and three states with gubernatorial elections this year: Kentucky, Louisiana and Mississippi.”

The New York Times reports Abrams will not run for president in 2020.

Trump Says Being President Has Cost Him Billions

August 13, 2019 at 5:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump claimed that being president “will personally cost him billions of dollars, due in part to the lawyers he has had to hire to defend him in various lawsuits,” NBC News reports.

Said Trump: “This thing is costing me a fortune, being president… It’s probably costing me from $3 to $5 billion for the privilege of being — and I couldn’t care less—I don’t care. You know if you’re wealthy, it doesn’t matter. I just want to do a great job.”

“These figures are virtually impossible to check; the president has not released his tax returns publicly, and has been found in the past to exaggerate his own wealth.”
