Trump Faces a Two-Front War In 2020

November 15, 2018 at 7:15 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“To win re-election, President Trump must wage a two-front war: Not only does he have to defend Democratic-leaning Midwest states that sealed his victory in 2016, but he now needs to defend against clear Republican erosion in the South and Southwest,” Mike Allen reports.

Said former White House aide Doug Sosnik: “Changing demographics and Trump have blown up the electoral map that has dominated American politics since 1992.”

“Sosnik projects that there could be more tossup states in the South and Southwest than in the Midwest — with almost twice the number of electoral votes at stake.”

New Trump Target in 2020 Is Minnesota

November 15, 2018 at 7:13 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump could be eyeing Minnesota as a way to expand his Midwest footprint in 2020, if the activities of his designated super PAC in the midterm elections are any indication,” the Washington Examiner reports.

“Minnesota was among the limited 2018 battlegrounds to see a major investment by America First Action, which gathered data that might inform Trump’s strategy and boost his re-election bid over the next two years. America First Action tailored its activities to states and subregions considered crucial to Trump’s next campaign: Michigan; Minnesota; North Carolina; Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maine’s 2nd Congressional District.”

McCarthy Blames Loss of House on ‘Historical Trends’

November 15, 2018 at 7:07 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republicans immediately resumed a wartime posture Wednesday after electing its new leadership — vowing to aggressively resist Democrats’ agenda and work to recapture the House majority after being routed in last week’s elections,” Politico reports.

“In his first press conference after Republicans chose him to be House minority leader next year, Rep. Kevin McCarthy largely attributed the GOP wipeout to historical trends while also repeatedly blaming spending by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg as the cause of several Republican defeats in close contests.”

Theresa May Faces New Resignations

November 15, 2018 at 7:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Theresa May’s battle to win wider backing for her Brexit deal was dealt a severe blow on Thursday morning by the resignation of Dominic Raab, the minister responsible for negotiating Britain’s exit from the EU,” the Financial Times reports.

“Mr. Raab, who was only appointed this summer after the resignation of David Davis, said in his resignation letter that he could not support an ‘indefinite backstop arrangement.”

“His departure is likely to embolden other Eurosceptic ministers to quit the government and makes it less likely that Mrs. May can get her plan through parliament.”

One U.K. government minister told the Daily Beast that the government was “fucked, in every hole” and admitted this could be the endgame for May, saying there were three possible routes: May resigns as prime minister, she fights a leadership challenge in her party, or she calls an election.

Judge Orders More Georgia Ballots Counted

November 14, 2018 at 11:32 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge has ruled that Georgia counties must count absentee ballots even if the voter’s date of birth is incorrect or missing, and he is preventing the state from finalizing election results until that happens,” the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“Although U.S. District Judge Steve Jones agreed with the Georgia Democratic Party and Stacey Abrams’ campaign on this issue, he ruled against them on two others. He will not require counties to accept absentee ballots with incorrect residence addresses or to accept provisional ballots cast by people who attempted to vote in a different county than where they are registered to vote.”

Retailer Markets ‘Build the Wall’ Toy

November 14, 2018 at 11:09 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Conservative gift retailer Keep and Bear will soon begin shipping a ‘Build the Wall‘ toy which resembles a LEGO product and extols the virtues of President Trump’s proposed border wall along the United States’ southern border with Mexico,” USA Today reports.

From the product’s description: “A mob of 10,000 Central American migrants is marching through Mexico and heading toward El Paso, Texas. Mexican border agents attempted to stop them at the Mexican border, but to no avail.”

“The wall will keep America safe and strong. Only then will we be able to help those in need.”

Sloppy Signatures May Disqualify Thousands of Florida Votes

November 14, 2018 at 10:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “At least 5,000 ballots from all voters — and perhaps twice that many — were left uncounted across Florida as a result of signature mismatches, according to various estimates from the Florida secretary of state and analysts examining the latest data.”

“The signature battle touches on constitutional questions of equal protection and free speech. But it is rooted in larger societal trends that are rapidly rendering an individual’s handwriting an unreliable electoral hallmark.”

Will the GOP Keep Dancing with Autocracy?

November 14, 2018 at 10:26 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

E.J. Dionne: “When a national leader urges that votes be ignored, or that an election result he doesn’t like might best be set aside, we label him an autocrat or an authoritarian.”

“When it’s President Trump, we shrug. Worse, many in his party go right along with his baseless charges of fraud.”

“We are in for a difficult two years. Surviving them will require that Republican senators take seriously the pledge they made in their oath of office to ‘support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.’ What we have seen so far is not encouraging.”

Trump’s Midterm Blues Are Roiling the White House

November 14, 2018 at 9:02 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vanity Fair: “As Donald Trump’s West Wing careens through one of the most turbulent weeks of his presidency, White House officials are struggling to understand the source of the fury fueling the president’s eruptions… Current and former officials are debating different theories for Trump’s outbursts, ranging from his fears over his son Don Jr.’s legal exposure to the prospect that House Democrats will unleash investigations in January.”

Said one former West Wing staffer: “This is a level of insanity I’ve never seen before.”

“What’s surprising to some advisers about how bad the past week has been is that Trump initially seemed to take the midterm losses in stride… But by Wednesday, after hours of commentary about the suburbs’ distaste for him and with seat after undecided House seat slipping toward the Democrats, his mood slid, too, hitting bottom in a bizarre and combative press conference.”

Trump Didn’t Want Rain to Mess Up His Hair

November 14, 2018 at 9:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vanity Fair: “Trump remained in a dark mood during his weekend trip to France to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I… On Saturday morning, Trump skipped attending a rain-soaked ceremony at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery to honor the Battle of Belleau Wood. When his absence became a scandal, the White House said the decision had been made because Marine One reportedly could not fly in the rain, and Secret Service did not want Trump traveling by motorcade. One Republican briefed on the internal discussions said the real reason Trump did not want to go was because there would be no tent to stand under.”

Said the source: “He was worried his hair was going to get messed up in the rain. John Bolton and everyone was telling him this was a big mistake.”

Mia Love Gains In Latest Vote Tally

November 14, 2018 at 8:52 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Ben McAdams’ (D) lead over Rep. Mia Love (R) continued to slip away Wednesday after an updated vote count out of Salt Lake and Juab counties showed the incumbent congresswoman gaining crucial votes,” the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

“And with the heavily-Republican Utah County expected to update its count on Friday, McAdams precarious lead of 0.36 percentage points is likely to change, and could potentially erode away entirely.”

Stone Had Text Conversations About WikiLeaks

November 14, 2018 at 6:42 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Six days before WikiLeaks began releasing Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta’s emails, Roger Stone had a text message conversation with a friend about WikiLeaks, according to phone records obtained by NBC News.

In the texts, Randy Credico told Stone he had insights into Julian Assange’s plans through a longtime friend, who was also Assange’s lawyer.

Fudge Mulls Challenge to Pelosi

November 14, 2018 at 6:40 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH) tells the Cleveland Plain Dealer that she’s considering challenging Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for House Speaker.

Said Fudge: “People are asking me to do it, and I am thinking about it. I need to give it some thought and see if I have an interest. I am at the very beginning of this process. It is just in discussion at this point.”

November 14, 2018 at 6:04 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

His comments are worth watching:

Trump’s Mood Takes a Foul Turn

November 14, 2018 at 5:37 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “A week after standing in the East Room and declaring victory in the midterm elections, the President is isolated and growing more furious by the day. He’s openly speculating about replacing more members of his Cabinet, though so far has stopped short of executing the dismissals, leaving those aides in a career purgatory.”

Said one White House official, noting the mood in the Oval Office is darker than normal this week: “Yes, he’s pissed — at damn near everyone.”

“Friends of the President describe him as embittered by the election losses and troubled by the Mueller investigation… Some of his longtime confidants are worried for his health, believing he’s gained weight and looks unwell.”

‘Public Hanging’ Joke Shakes Up Mississippi Runoff

November 14, 2018 at 5:12 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A backlash against Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith’s (R) “public hanging” joke is shaking up the Senate runoff race in Mississippi, prompting Republican concerns about their chances of retaining the deep-red seat, The Hill reports.

Jackson Clarion Ledger: “A political action committee supporting U.S. Senate candidate Mike Espy has released a video online showing Espy’s opponent in the Nov. 27 Mississippi runoff race, Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, superimposed into an old photo of a white crowd attending the lynching of two black men.”

Trump Endorses Bipartisan Criminal Justice Reform

November 14, 2018 at 5:08 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The legislation adds several changes to U.S. sentencing laws — particularly easing some mandatory minimum sentences — to a criminal justice measure passed by the House earlier this year. But some influential conservatives, such as Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), have been opposed to efforts to loosen sentencing laws.”
