A New Look, Continued

July 19, 2018 at 11:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Thanks for your patience as I continue to work out a few kinks in Political Wire‘s new look. Readers have been very helpful in spotting bugs, glitches and other problems.

Here’s a sampling of the feedback:

I like it. Not that it makes any of your stories happier or cheerier, but it makes the reading experience more pleasant. Keep up the great work.

A majority of comments were like this one:

Love the new look! Much more distinctive and very easy to read.

But not everyone is happy. About a dozen readers shared this sentiment:

I’m an addictive reader and contributor on Political Wire.  I’m not someone who is afraid of change or simply likes things “the old way.”  So from that perspective I’m offering this critique: the red brick color for the headlines just glares off the screen. It’s off-putting/uninviting.  I would say most of the readers come to PW for a calm conversation about the topics of the chaotic political day and a softer or more soothing color would work better for me.

In the hundreds of comments received, I’ve also had many good suggestions. Please keep them coming!

Trump Says Biden Is the ‘Dream Candidate’

July 19, 2018 at 11:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump told CBS News that he dreams about running against former Vice President Joe Biden in 2020, asserting that Biden “never got more than 1%” during his two presidential bids and that Barack Obama “took him out of the garbage heap.”

Why a Blue Wave Won’t Wash Away as Many Republicans

July 19, 2018 at 11:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Cohn: “Today, there are just nine Republicans who represent districts that tilt toward the Democrats, based on the districts’ voting in the last two presidential elections compared with the country as a whole. There were 24 Republicans in such a precarious position in 2006, 67 such Democrats in 2010 and 90 Democrats in 1994.”

“In a wave election, Republicans representing Democratic-tilting districts like these would be projected to lose their re-election bids… Mostly, though, the districts are above sea level. Incumbents who represent even somewhat Republican-leaning districts are generally favored to win re-election, even in a wave election. Waves aren’t necessarily as deadly as you might think.”

Nunes Used Campaign Funds for Celtics Tickets

July 19, 2018 at 11:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) “used political donations to pay for nearly $15,000 in tickets to Boston Celtics basketball games as well as winery tours and lavish trips to Las Vegas,” the Fresno Bee reports.

“Nunes has reportedly been a Celtics fan since high school, though he grew up in Tulare, California. He used the money from his political action committee last year on three occasions to buy tickets.”

Can Never Trumpers Find Strength In Numbers?

July 19, 2018 at 11:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ron Brownstein: “Trump’s Republican skeptics, both inside and outside of Congress, agree that GOP officials who privately rail about Trump won’t publicly challenge him, primarily because polls show he’s so popular with the party base. But that’s partly a self-fulfilling prophecy: One reason Trump is so popular with the base is because no one has made a systematic case against his presidency from a Republican perspective.”

“A handful of Republican elected officials, and a slightly longer roster of party strategists and intellectuals, have intermittently criticized Trump… If anything, these solo flights may have weakened the anti-Trump cause inside the GOP.”

“There’s no easy solution to that dilemma. But history suggests the first step may be to find strength in numbers. In recent decades, other factions disaffected with their party’s direction have amplified their influence by coalescing and creating their own institutions. Probably the best-known recent example is the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC), which party centrists formed after Ronald Reagan routed old-style liberal Walter Mondale in 1984.”

Democrats Back Away from ‘Treason’ Charge

July 19, 2018 at 9:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats are happy to say President Trump undermined American democracy. That he patted Vladimir Putin on the back for interfering in U.S. elections. That he’s being blackmailed by Russia,” the AP reports.

“But that he committed treason? That’s too far for some leading Democrats worried about sending the wrong message during an election year.”

“A debate has raged in Democratic circles this week over how strongly to condemn Trump’s comments in Helsinki, where, standing by Putin’s side, the U.S. president refused to say he believed American intelligence over Putin’s denials about Russian election interference. Trump later sought to walk back his stance, saying he misspoke using a double negative.”

Trump Accuses Media of Pushing War with Russia

July 19, 2018 at 7:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump accused the news media in a tweet of pushing for a confrontation with Russia.

Said Trump: “The Fake News Media wants so badly to see a major confrontation with Russia, even a confrontation that could lead to war. They are pushing so recklessly hard and hate the fact that I’ll probably have a good relationship with Putin. We are doing MUCH better than any other country!”

How Putin Can Help Undermine Mueller

July 19, 2018 at 7:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Time: “As the Mueller investigation unfolds in the coming weeks and months, expect the Kremlin and state media to repeatedly bring up this list of suspicious Americans and demand to know why the U.S. has not yet provided access to them. It will not actually address the charges made by the special counsel. But it may succeed in clouding an already complex investigation with a head-spinning barrage of claims and counterclaims. All the easier for the Russian President—and his American counterpart—to obscure the actual evidence.”

Accused Russian Agent Offered Sex for Access

July 19, 2018 at 7:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The woman, Maria Butina, carried out her campaign through a series of deceptions that began in 2014, if not earlier, prosecutors said. She lied to obtain a student visa to pursue graduate work at American University in 2016. Apparently hoping for a work visa that would grant her a longer stay, she offered one American sex in exchange for a job. She moved in with a Republican political operative nearly twice her age, describing him as her boyfriend. But she privately expressed ‘disdain’ for him and had him do her homework, prosecutors said.”

GOP Overwhelmingly Backs Trump’s Putin Performance

July 19, 2018 at 6:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Axios/Survey Monkey poll finds 79% of Republicans approve of President Trump’s performance during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin while just 18% disapprove.

”This poll foreshadows the coming national drama. Every piece of data, and virtually every public action of elected Republican officials, shows Trump will have overwhelming and probably unbreakable party support, regardless of what Robert Mueller finds with his Russia probe.”

A new CBS News poll finds 68% of Republicans approve of Trump’s performance with Putin.

Trump Threatens Auto Tariffs

July 19, 2018 at 6:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “stood by his threats to levy sweeping tariffs on automobile imports as a way to extract concessions from trading partners, despite opposition from the industry and discontent in Congress with the White House’s proposal,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Resistance to the tariffs is strong and growing. A coalition of foreign and domestic auto companies, along with auto dealers and auto-parts makers, released a letter on Wednesday urging Mr. Trump to refrain from the tariffs. A bipartisan group of 149 House members also urged the president not to move forward with the tariffs.”

July 19, 2018 at 6:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I’m a low-key, understated guy, but that should not be mistaken for what my spine is made out of. I’ll just leave it at that.”

— FBI Director Christopher Wray, interviewed by NBC News, on whether he’s considered resigning.

Trump’s Military Parade Will Cost $12 Million

July 19, 2018 at 4:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s military parade in Washington, D.C. is likely to cost $12 million, nearly as much as the now canceled military exercise with South Korea that Trump called “tremendously expensive” and said cost “a fortune,” three U.S. defense officials tell CNN.

Trump Has Muddied Message on Russia Since Beginning

July 19, 2018 at 4:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Two weeks before his inauguration, Donald Trump was shown highly classified intelligence indicating that President Vladimir Putin of Russia had personally ordered complex cyberattacks to sway the 2016 American election,” the New York Times reports.

“The evidence included texts and emails from Russian military officers and information gleaned from a top-secret source close to Mr. Putin, who had described to the C.I.A. how the Kremlin decided to execute its campaign of hacking and disinformation.”

“Mr. Trump sounded grudgingly convinced, according to several people who attended the intelligence briefing. But ever since, Mr. Trump has tried to cloud the very clear findings that he received on Jan. 6, 2017, which his own intelligence leaders have unanimously endorsed.”

New York Opens Tax Inquiry Into Trump Foundation

July 19, 2018 at 2:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has opened an investigation into whether the Donald J. Trump Foundation violated state tax laws, a move that could lead to a criminal referral for possible prosecution, according to two state officials familiar with the inquiry,” the New York Times reports.
