FBI Looking at Suspicious Manafort Wire Transfers

October 29, 2017 at 9:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The FBI’s investigation of Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, includes a keen focus on a series of suspicious wire transfers in which offshore companies linked to Manafort moved more than $3 million all over the globe between 2012 and 2013,” BuzzFeed News reports.

“These transactions — which have not been previously reported — drew the attention of federal law enforcement officials as far back as 2012, when they began to examine wire transfers to determine if Manafort hid money from tax authorities or helped the Ukrainian regime close to Russian President Vladimir Putin launder some of the millions it plundered through corrupt dealings.”

Trump’s Approval Hits New Low

October 29, 2017 at 9:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds President Trump’s job approval rating has declined to the lowest point of his presidency, 38% to 58%.

“Looking ahead to the 2018 midterm elections, which take place a year from now, 48% of registered voters in the poll say they prefer a Democratic-controlled Congress, while 41% want a Republican-controlled Congress.”

Robert Mueller Sends a Message

October 29, 2017 at 8:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

John Cassidy: “After CNN published its story on Friday night, some Democrats and commentators suggested that the Trump Administration may have known the Mueller indictments were coming and leaked the Steele story to create a smokescreen… Plausible as that theory sounds, it, too, is conjecture.”

“What isn’t speculation is the fact that, five months into his investigation, Mueller has brought a first set of criminal charges. By the standards of recent special prosecutors, that is fast work, and it confirms Mueller’s reputation as someone who doesn’t like to dally. Now that he has started arresting people, there is no reason to suppose he will stop. And that is precisely the message he wants to send.”

Trump Organization Skirts Pledge on Foreign Deals

October 29, 2017 at 8:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s eldest son, Donald Jr., is expected to launch two residential projects in India for the Trump Organization in the coming weeks, continuing the family’s promotion of the Trump empire despite concerns over the president’s potential conflicts of interest with foreign governments,” the Washington Post reports.

“The Trump Organization vowed early on there would be ‘no new foreign deals’ during Trump’s tenure as president; these two projects in India were inked before his election.”

“But the high-profile launches demonstrate that the pledge comes with an asterisk — agreements made years ago can move forward or be revitalized, such as the Trumps’ 2007 deal to build a luxury beachfront resort in the Dominican Republic that may be revived.”

Quote of the Day

“There are a lot of ways to skin a cat. And he is skinning himself.”

— House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, quoted by the Washington Post, on President Trump.

British Minister Admits Asking Assistant to Buy Sex Toys

October 29, 2017 at 8:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The British Cabinet Office is to investigate whether Conservative MP Mark Garnier “broke the ministerial code after he admitted asking his former assistant to buy sex toys,” the Guardian reports.

However, Garnier insisted that referring to his assistant as “sugar tits,” as she says he did, was a reference to the popular BBC comedy Gavin and Stacey, saying: “It absolutely does not constitute harassment.”

Virginia GOP Flier ‘Misgenders’ Democratic Candidate

October 29, 2017 at 8:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A new campaign mailer paid for by the Republican Party of Virginia repeatedly refers to Danica Roem, a transgender woman seeking election to the state House of Delegates, as a man and accuses her of making her identity part of the race,” the Washington Post reports.

Flake Explains He Could Not Condone Trump

October 29, 2017 at 8:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) told the Washington Post that he spoke out against President Trump because, “I couldn’t sleep at night having to embrace the president or condoning his behavior or being okay with some of his positions.”

He added: “I knew that when I spoke out at that time that I was out of step with a lot of the Republican primary voters, but I felt that I had to do it. I had hoped — and I still hope and I’m confident at some point — that the fever will break. But it just became more and more apparent that it certainly wasn’t going to break by next year.”

Mercers Go After Elizabeth Warren

October 29, 2017 at 8:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Boston Globe: “This time the attacks are coming from someone new: Robert Mercer, a New York billionaire who is trying to remake American politics and who bankrolled former Trump chief strategist Stephen Bannon’s Republican revolution.”

“Mercer’s methods are anything but subtle. One political operative described Mercer’s approach to politics as a ‘trail of tears’ tactic, a reference to President Andrew Jackson’s forced removal of Native Americans from their homelands.”

“Given political realities — including Warren’s massive fund-raising advantage and Massachusetts’ liberal status — Mercer’s intent isn’t really to defeat her in the 2018 Senate race, according to three people with knowledge of the family’s intentions. Instead, Robert Mercer and his politically minded middle daughter Rebekah have a longer term goal: They want to sand down some of Warren’s gloss ahead of an expected presidential campaign in 2020.”

House GOP Abandons Conservative Playbook

October 29, 2017 at 8:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republicans are so desperate for a win on taxes that they’re agreeing to proposals that would have caused internal party warfare just a year or two ago,” Politico reports.

“They’re considering forgoing a big cut in the top income tax rate on the rich, offering moderate-income Americans so many tax breaks that many would be excused from paying taxes entirely and passing a potentially 1,000-page tax bill few have seen within a matter of weeks. Last week, they agreed to a budget that ignored their demands for deep cuts in federal spending just so they could pass a tax bill using a special procedure that enables them move forward without any Democratic votes.”

Roger Stone Suspended from Twitter

October 29, 2017 at 8:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Roger Stone, a longtime associate of President Trump and self-described political provocateur, was suspended from Twitter on Saturday,” Politico reports.

“Stone lashed out at CNN anchor Don Lemon and others on Friday night, seemingly responding to reports that an indictment from special prosecutor Robert Mueller was imminent in the ongoing probe into the Trump election campaign’s alleged ties to Russia.”

Trump Will Release All JFK Files

October 29, 2017 at 8:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump announced via Twitter that he will be releasing all of the JFK files instead of just part of them.

After strict consultation with General Kelly, the CIA and other Agencies, I will be releasing ALL #JFKFiles other than the names and…addresses of any mentioned person who is still living. I am doing this for reasons of full disclosure, transparency and…in order to put any and all conspiracy theories to rest.

Facebook Stuggles to Contain Russia Narrative

October 29, 2017 at 8:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Facebook has been happy to keep congressional investigators focused on the Russian-bought online ads that helped sway voters in last year’s election — despite the many other ways that fake messages and bogus accounts spread on the dark side of social media.”

“But that may be about to end: Facebook, Twitter and Google are preparing for hearings this week where lawmakers are expected to grill the companies about the broad reach that foreign actors achieved through fake accounts and deliberate misinformation, a topic that encompasses far more than the 3,000 paid political ads that Facebook disclosed last month.”

A Watershed Moment for the Russia Investigation

October 28, 2017 at 11:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Matt Miller, a former Obama Justice Department official, emails Mike Allen on reports of pending indictments in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe: “I think it means this will be a rolling investigation. Rather than conduct his entire investigation and then wrap things up with indictments and possibly a report at the end, he is doing it in stages, the way the Justice Department might attack a drug cartel or a mafia family.”

He added that this “is a watershed moment for the politics surrounding the investigation.”

Quote of the Day

October 28, 2017 at 11:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“You have no weight issues, that’s the good news, right? So, you take out whatever you need, okay?”

— President Trump, quoted by the Washington Post, handing out Halloween candy in the Oval Office to children of White House reporters.

Trump Tries to Generate Suspense Over Fed Pick

October 28, 2017 at 11:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump says on Instagram video that he’ll announce his pick for Federal Reserve chair next week:

People are anxiously awaiting my decision as to who the next head of the Fed next week. I will be announcing it sometime next week. It will be a person who hopefully will do a fantastic job. I have somebody very specific in mind. I think everybody will be very impressed.

Mattis Says Threat of Nuclear Attack Accelerating

October 28, 2017 at 11:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In remarks in Seoul with South Korean Defense Minister Song Young-moo at his side, Mattis accused the North of illegal and unnecessary missile and nuclear programs — and vowed to defeat any attack,” the AP reports.

“Mattis said North Korea engages in ‘outlaw’ behavior and that the U.S. will never accept a nuclear North. He added that regardless of what the North might try, it is overmatched by the firepower and cohesiveness of the decades-old U.S.-South Korean alliance.”

Five Possible Mueller Indictments

October 28, 2017 at 9:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Roll Call suggests the most likely indictments from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation — coming as soon as Monday — are Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn and Carter Page.

The “long shots” are Donald Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner.

“If Mueller is targeting the commander in chief, going after his son or son-in-law this early would be a way of getting Trump’s attention.”
