Trump Wanted to Focus on ‘Smoke-and-Mirrors’

April 24, 2017 at 2:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

In his new book, Ohio Gov. John Kasich retells the story that Donald Trump’s son, Don Jr., called a Kasich adviser during the 2016 presidential race and asked if the governor would consider being Trump’s vice president, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Don Jr. said Kasich could be in charge of “all domestic and foreign policy,” and Trump would “be busy making American (sic) great again.”

Kasich writes: “He would leave the running of the country to someone else and keep his focus on the smoke-and-mirror aspects of the job of president, helping Americans feel that he was somehow making their lives better just by being at the helm.”

April 24, 2017 at 2:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Fox & Friends news anchor Heather Nauert was officially announced as the next spokeswoman for the U.S. State Department, the Daily Beast reports.

“During the controversy over Nordstrom dropping Ivanka Trump’s clothing line, Nauert tweeted out her support for the brand in spite of ‘liberal pressure,’ and included a photograph of herself wearing the brand’s items.”

April 24, 2017 at 1:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Business of Fashion: “At American discount retailer Stein Mart, Ivanka Trump apparel is being sold under the guise of a different label. The After Trump Era

April 24, 2017 at 1:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Graydon Carter: “You’re not alone if you think you are living through an Allen Drury novel—or, depending upon your age, Dr. Strangelove or Wag the Dog. Sean Spicer, the poor fellow, is living through his own episode of South Park. In the B.T. (Before Trump) era, most people I know went about their daily lives reasonably confident in the knowledge that the papers or news sites they read that morning were all they needed to stay informed for the rest of the day.”

“But now, A.T., all that has changed. Those same people check their phones with the regularity of lovelorn teenagers—wincing as they look to see what fresh horrors the great man in the White House has unleashed. Trump may thrive on conflict and disorder, but most of us do not.”

Majority Want Independent Probe of Russian Tampering

April 24, 2017 at 12:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that 73% of Americans want an independent, non-partisan commission instead of Congress to investigate Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election.

Also striking: 61% say they have little to no confidence in Congress conducting a fair and impartial investigation into Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election.

Sheldon Adelson Not Happy with Trump

April 24, 2017 at 12:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

GOP mega-donor Sheldon Adelson “hasn’t contributed to pro-Trump outside groups since the inauguration, a move that’s drawn notice within the party… Adelson has privately complained about Trump’s failure to fulfill his campaign promise to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem… Adelson is also rankled that some people he recommended for administration posts haven’t yet been tapped,” Politico reports.

“More fundamentally, Adelson is dismayed by what he sees as a state of chaos in the new administration.”

Why Trump May Welcome a Government Shutdown

With a government shutdown looming at the end of the week, it’s not at all certain that President Trump will back down on including border wall spending in a government funding bill.

At Least One Promise Kept

April 24, 2017 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Frum: “Obamacare remains the law of the land. So does NAFTA. Tax reform exists only as pixels in a tweet. Infrastructure ain’t happening. Five months after the Republicans won united control of Congress and the presidency, it seems uncertain whether one-party Washington can avoid a government shutdown over a budget dispute.”

“Yet as Day 100 of his presidency nears, President Donald Trump can take credit for one huge accomplishment, an accomplishment more central to his election campaign than any of the unfulfilled pledges above. Illegal immigration into the United States has slowed dramatically. The Department of Homeland Security reports that illegal crossings across the southern border plunged 40 percent in the first month of the Trump presidency, the steepest decline in illegal migration since the recession of 2009. Illegal immigration by family groups with children has dropped by over 90 percent.”

Bonus Exchange of the Day

April 24, 2017 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump was interviewed by the Associated Press:

AP: Can I ask you, over your first 100 days — you’re not quite there yet — how do you feel like the office has changed you?

TRUMP: Well the one thing I would say — and I say this to people — I never realized how big it was. Everything’s so (unintelligible) like, you know the orders are so massive.

Democrats Head to Campaign School

April 24, 2017 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News: “If an anti-Donald Trump wave is coming, House Democrats want to be ready to catch it. So they’re sending hundreds of operatives to school in a massive training operation that they say is bigger and starting earlier than anything the party has attempted before. Over 1,300 aspiring campaign managers, field directors, and finance chiefs have so far enrolled in what the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is calling ‘DCCC-University.’”

“Sessions are scheduled in Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Raleigh, North Carolina in coming weeks, as well as online, open to anyone who applies.”

GOP Worried Trump Will Drag Down 2018 Ticket

April 24, 2017 at 9:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans say President Donald Trump needs to turn things around fast — or the GOP could pay dearly in 2018,” Politico reports.

“With the party preparing to defend its congressional majorities in next year’s midterms, senior Republicans are expressing early concern about Trump’s lack of legislative accomplishments, his record-low approval ratings, and the overall dysfunction that’s gripped his administration.”

Most Americans Want Government to Do More

April 24, 2017 at 8:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “This is another striking finding from the NBC/WSJ poll: 57% of the public says that the government should do more to solve problems and meet the needs of Americans, versus 39% who said the government is doing too many things better left to businesses and individuals. That’s the highest share yearning for a more active government since the poll began asking voters about the role of government in 1995. And it’s a significant shift even since 2015, when 50% said that the government should do more while 46% complained that it was too active.”

Quote of the Day

April 24, 2017 at 8:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A lot of the people have said that, some people said it was the single best speech ever made in that chamber.”

— President Trump, talking with the Associated Press about his speech before a joint session of Congress.

Exchange of the Day

April 24, 2017 at 7:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump was interviewed by the Associated Press:

TRUMP: I don’t watch CNN anymore.

AP: You just said you did.

TRUMP: No. No, I, if I’m passing it, what did I just say (inaudible)?

AP: You just said —

TRUMP: Where? Where?

AP: Two minutes ago.

TRUMP: No, they treat me so badly. No, I just said that. No, I, what’d I say, I stopped watching them. But I don’t watch CNN anymore. I don’t watch MSNBC. I don’t watch it. Now I heard yesterday that MSNBC, you know, they tell me what’s going on.

AP: Right.

April 24, 2017 at 7:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said that he can be “50 times” more brutal than extremists and Muslim militants who’ve staged beheadings and warned that he would even “eat” terrorists if they were captured alive, Bloomberg reports.

Said Duterte: “Just give me vinegar and salt, I’ll eat his liver.”

Messina Now Working for Theresa May

April 24, 2017 at 7:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May has hired President Obama’s former deputy chief of staff Jim Messina for her election campaign, reuniting the winning team behind David Cameron’s unexpected victory two years ago,” Bloomberg reports.

“Messina and his colleagues arrived in London on Monday to begin work on May’s bid to secure a bigger majority for her Conservative Party and a fresh mandate for her vision of Brexit, a person working on the campaign said.”

Trump and Pence Allies Clean Up as Lobbyists

April 24, 2017 at 7:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former campaign aides, fundraisers and others with ties to President Trump and Vice President Pence have attracted dozens of new lobbying clients in Washington, raking in more than $2.2 million in lobbying fees in the first months of the administration,” a USA Today analysis shows.
