Trump Has Expanded House Battleground

September 11, 2016 at 9:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats seeking control of the House are pushing into new battleground districts, exposing vulnerable Republicans in diverse suburban areas that have been safe GOP seats for nearly a generation, according to a Politico analysis of Census demographic data, internal polling from both parties, and TV advertising data.”

“Longtime GOP strongholds like Orange County, Calif. and suburbs of Orlando, Minneapolis, Kansas City, look set to have competitive House races for the first time in decades. Indeed, Donald Trump has accelerated decade-long changes in both parties’ coalitions, repulsing minority voters while driving more college-educated whites out of their traditional home in the GOP. Democrats — who would need a whopping 30 seats to win the House — are already targeting at least 18 of the 60 GOP districts with the highest share of college-educated white voters, many of which also have large numbers of nonwhite voters. And Democrats are looking at that formula as they seek to expand the House map even further this fall, beyond even first-ever challenges to veteran Republicans like Florida’s John Mica and California’s Darrell Issa.”

For all the clever tweets, sophisticated data, and focus group tested messages the Hillary Clinton campaign pumps out daily, they may have forgotten to ask the simple question that should be at the heart of every campaign: If voters had one sentence to explain why they support her candidacy, what would it be? After nineteen months of campaigning, I’m not sure they have an answer to that.

September 11, 2016 at 5:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton released a statement from her physician, Dr. Lisa Bardack, who examined Mrs. Clinton at her house in Chappaqua on Sunday after she fell ill at a 9/11 ceremony in New York City:

“Secretary Clinton has been experiencing a cough related to allergies. On Friday, during follow up evaluation of her prolonged cough, she was diagnosed with pneumonia. She was put on antibiotics, and advised to rest and modify her schedule. While at this morning’s event, she became overheated and dehydrated. I have just examined her and she is now re-hydrated and recovering nicely.”

Here’s a video of Hillary Clinton abruptly leaving the 9/11 ceremony today in New York City.

Clinton Abruptly Leaves 9/11 Ceremony

September 11, 2016 at 10:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton had a “medical episode” that required her to leave a 9/11 commemoration ceremony early, a law enforcement source who witnessed the event told Fox News.

Clinton “appeared to faint on her way into her van and had to be helped by her security” and was “clearly having some type of medical episode.”

Clinton’s stumbled off the curb, her “knees buckled” and she lost a shoe as she was helped into a van during her “unexpected early departure,” a witness told Fox News.

CBS News reports the pool of reporters who travel with Clinton “are being penned in at 9/11 memorial, not informed of her current whereabouts.”

NBC News confirms that two law enforcement officials say Clinton “fell ill and may have fainted.”

According to CBS News, the Clinton campaign says, “During the ceremony, she felt overheated so departed to go to her daughter’s apartment, and is feeling much better.”

Flashback Quote of the Day

September 11, 2016 at 10:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“40 Wall Street actually was the second-tallest building in downtown Manhattan, and it was actually, before the World Trade Center, was the tallest—and then, when they built the World Trade Center, it became known as the second-tallest. And now it’s the tallest.”

— Donald Trump, giving an interview to WWOR on 9/11 saying his building was now the tallest in lower Manhattan.

Trump Lied About Post-9/11 Funds

September 11, 2016 at 9:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s tale about why he took $150,000 in 9/11 money is as tall as the Downtown skyscraper he says he used in recovery efforts,” the New York Daily News reports.

“Though the billionaire presidential candidate has repeatedly suggested he got that money for helping others out after the attacks, documents obtained by the Daily News show that Trump’s account was just a huge lie.”

“Records from the Empire State Development Corp., which administered the recovery program, show that Trump’s company asked for those funds for ‘rent loss,’ ‘cleanup’ and ‘repair’ — not to recuperate money lost in helping people. That government program was designed to help local businesses get back on their feet — not reimburse people for their charitable work.”

Quote of the Day

September 11, 2016 at 9:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“We saw this curtain of black smoke that was stretched across the island. Occasionally it would be broken by a firefighter coming out. I remember one image so indelibly, dragging his ax, and it was as close to depiction of hell that I’ve ever personally seen.”

— Hillary Clinton, in an interview on CNN, on what she saw as she approached Ground Zero on September 12, 2001.

Clinton Keeps Raising Money

September 11, 2016 at 9:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton “is not letting up on gas when it comes to fundraising,” the AP reports.

“Clinton planned to return to California on Monday for still more finance events after a lucrative August swing through dot-com mansions in Silicon Valley and celebrity-packed dinners in Los Angeles.”

“Her allies say the continued fundraising helps other Democrats because the party can keep building up voter turnout operations. It also serves as protection in a rollicking race against a man who claims to be worth $10 billion and once said he was willing to spend up to $1 billion to get elected. So far, he’s put about $60 million of his own money in his campaign.”

Clinton Leads But Enthusiasm Gap Could Hurt Her

September 11, 2016 at 8:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows Hillary Clinton maintains a lead over Donald Trump, 46% to 41%, with Gary Johnson at 9% and Jill Stein at 2%, “but lagging interest among some of her supporters poses a potential turnout challenge for Democrats with less than nine weeks before Election Day.”

“Trump’s supporters report greater interest in the campaign and voting, which could factor into turnout. More than 6 in 10 registered voters who support Trump say they are following the campaign very closely, and 93% say they are absolutely certain to vote. By contrast, 45% of Clinton backers are paying close attention to the race, and 80% are certain to vote, while one-fifth say they will probably or are less likely to cast a ballot.”

New Poll Finds Presidential Race a Toss Up

September 11, 2016 at 6:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Morning Consult poll finds Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump by just two points, 41% to 39%, with Gary Johnson at 10% and Jill Stein at 3%

Key finding: “Among independent likely voters, Trump leads Clinton by 9 points, 35 percent to 26 percent, when they are presented with all the possible candidates on the ballot.”

Clinton Backs Off ‘Basket of Deplorables’ Comment

September 10, 2016 at 2:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton partially walked back comments she made on Friday night, describing half of Donald Trump’s supporters as “deplorables” who were driven “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic” sentiments, Politico reports.

Said Clinton: “Last night I was ‘grossly generalistic,’ and that’s never a good idea. I regret saying ‘half’ — that was wrong.”

Trump Campaign Tweets Fake Photo of Rally

September 10, 2016 at 2:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Deadspin: “The Trump campaign is responding to Hillary Clinton’s characterizing a large segment of his supporters as white supremacists by sending out a photo from a 2015 Trump rally in Dallas and claiming it was his appearance last night in Pensacola, Fla.”

“The photo, taken at a September 14, 2015 rally in Dallas, has been carefully cropped to cut out the ‘American Airlines Center’ logo and the retired Dallas Stars jerseys hanging in the rafters.”

Real Time Projections May Upend Election Coverage

September 10, 2016 at 2:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “For decades, news organizations have refrained from releasing early results in presidential battleground states on Election Day, adhering to a strict, time-honored embargo until a majority of polls there have closed.”

“Now, a group of data scientists, journalists and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs is seeking to upend that reporting tradition, providing detailed projections of who is winning at any given time on Election Day in key swing states, and updating the information in real time from dawn to dusk.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

September 10, 2016 at 12:31 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I don’t see the path. I just don’t see the path. … I’ve been in these races where you’re nine points down, then you’re five down — you’re still losing.”

— GOP strategist Stuart Stevens, quoted by the Washington Post, noting that Donald Trump is doing no better than Mitt Romeny in the presidential race.
