Electoral College Won’t Save Clinton If Race Tightens

September 1, 2016 at 8:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Silver: “The race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump has tightened. Clinton, whose lead over Trump exceeded 8 percentage points at her peak following the Democratic convention, is ahead by 4 or 5 percentage points today, according to our polls-only forecast.”

“But what if the race continues to tighten? I’ve often heard Democrats express a belief that Clinton’s position in the swing states will protect her in the Electoral College even if the race draws to a dead heat overall. But this is potentially mistaken. Although it’s plausible that Clinton’s superior field operation will eventually pay dividends, so far her swing state results have ebbed and flowed with her national numbers.”

“The other thing to notice about Clinton’s swing state polls is that they aren’t especially strong (or weak) relative to her national polls.”

LePage Promises to Never Talk to Media Again

September 1, 2016 at 7:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) “vowed that he would never again speak to the media, whom he accused of stoking controversies,” the Boston Globe reports.

Said LePage: “I will no longer speak to the press ever again after today. And I’m serious. Everything will be put into writing. I’m tired of being caught in the gotcha moments.”

He also clarified he will not resign after leaving an obscenity-laced voice-mail message for a state lawmaker.

Democrats Slightly Favored to Take Senate

September 1, 2016 at 7:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball: “It seems like only yesterday when the Republicans took over the U.S. Senate. Actually, nearly two years have passed since that big moment, when the GOP gained nine seats and took a 54-46 majority (including two independents who caucus with the Democrats) after eight years of Democratic control.”

“But this may prove to be the shortest period of control for a party since the early 2000s. From the vantage point of Labor Day, it appears as though that 2014 flip could become a 2016 flop, and on Nov. 8, Democrats have a good chance to grab at least a tie (broken by the new vice president) and possibly a majority of as many as several seats. We let the Senate races settle over the summer but summer’s effectively over — and we are making eight different ratings changes this week. Many favor Democrats, but a few favor Republicans. The takeaway is that as we head into the stretch run of the campaign, the Democrats seemingly hold a narrow edge in the race for a majority. But that majority could be quite small, small enough that Republicans could be poised to wipe it out in 2018, perhaps leading to another bare minimum stint in the majority.”

Clinton Makes Major Ad Buy In Arizona

September 1, 2016 at 7:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Clinton campaign is looking to turn up the heat with an ambitious ad buy in Arizona — a state that no democratic presidential candidate has won in the past 20 years,” ABC News reports.

“The six-figure ad buy will begin with their previously released spot titled, Role Model — which an aide described as their “most effective ad of the summer.”

Senate Advertising Bigger Than Presidential

September 1, 2016 at 7:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In another sign of the unusual nature of this election year, slightly more has been spent thus far on general-election broadcast television ads targeting U.S. Senate contests than on those for the White House race,” Bloomberg reports.

“Kantar Media/CMAG shows $129.3 million has been spent through Aug. 29 on the general-election phase of 18 Senate races, compared to $128.4 million that’s been plowed into TV ads for the presidential campaign… Through the first eight months of 2012, for example, $350 million had been spent on general-election ads for the presidential race, while just $70 million had been spent on 22 Senate races.”

Most Say Johnson Should Be Allowed to Debate

September 1, 2016 at 6:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Morning Consult poll a large percentage of voters say the Libertarian and Green Party nominees, Gary Johnson and Jill Stein, should be included in the first presidential debate.

Key findings: 52% say Johnson should be included and 47% say Stein should be allowed to participate.

Overall, a large majority of voters (66%) say they are likely to watch the first presidential debate.

Trump Doubles Down on Immigration Policies

August 31, 2016 at 10:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Donald Trump “made his immigration policies clear: Mexico will fund an impenetrable, beautiful border wall, and the Republican presidential nominee’s administration will begin its construction on the first day of his presidency,” Politico reports.

Said Trump: “On Day One, we will begin working on an impenetrable, physical, tall, powerful, beautiful southern border wall. We will use the best technology, including above and below ground sensors. That’s the tunnels. Remember that. Above and below. Above and below ground sensors. Towers. Aerial surveillance and manpower to supplement the wall. Find and dislocate tunnels and keep out criminal cartels and Mexico will work with us. I really believe it. Mexico will work with us. I absolutely believe it.”

“Trump outlined other planks of his policy position, including a promise to return all detained undocumented people to their home countries and zero tolerance for immigrants who commit crimes. It amounted to a massive deportation program.”

He noted: “You can call it deported if you want. The press doesn’t like that term. You can call it whatever the hell you want. They’re gone.”

Can Undecided Voters Help Trump Win?

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

In an earlier post, I noted that the number of voters supporting third party candidates or who are still undecided has been grown instead of falling like it did in the past two presidential elections. Nate Silver even suggested the third party candidates were hurting Hillary Clinton more than Donald Trump.

Trump Had Been Planning Mexico Trip for Weeks

August 31, 2016 at 9:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump’s visit to Mexico was not hastily put together, but the result of a couple of weeks of closely guarded work,” sources close to the campaign told NBC News.

“Trump insiders quietly reached out to officials in Mexico with the goal being to prompt an invitation from President Enrique Peña Nieto to meet Trump in person… Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner led the effort to secure a meeting, the sources said. With receptive signals coming back from Mexico, Team Trump waited for the formal invitation they had set in motion.”

Trump Still Has No Ground Game In Florida

August 31, 2016 at 9:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“How many of the 24 field offices that Team Trump said in early August they’d open this month in Florida are now up and running? None yet, according to Republican officials in the state.”

“The Republican presidential nominee has one of his campaign’s weakest ground games in his most crucial swing state, several political insiders and donors told Bloomberg Politics. Now, some Republicans are worried it’s getting too late to recover, with vote-by-mail ballots going out starting in late September and Democrats pledging a big push in early voting.”

Mexican President Contradicts Trump

August 31, 2016 at 8:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump swept into Mexico City on a politically perilous mission to prove his mettle as a negotiator by facing a nation that he has repeatedly denigrated and has promised to compel to pay for a border wall,” the New York Times reports.

“But Mr. Trump’s efforts at diplomacy in a meeting with Mexico’s leader, Enrique Peña Nieto, quickly backfired: Mr. Trump said that the two men did not discuss financing for the wall, one of his signature immigration issues, while Mr. Pena Nieto said later on Twitter that at the start of their meeting, ‘I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall.'”

Clinton Holds Small Edge Nationally

August 31, 2016 at 6:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Fox News poll shows Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump in the presidential race nationally by just two points, 41% to 39%, with Gary Johnson at 9% and Jill Stein at 4%.

The third-party candidates take more from Clinton than Trump, as she holds a six-point lead in the two-way matchup, 48% to 42%.

For comparison, the HuffPost Pollster national average shows Clinton still leading by six points, 47% to 41%.

Mexico Trip a Big Win for Trump

August 31, 2016 at 5:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Donald Trump met in Mexico with President Enrique Peña Nieto, who is being criticized by many Mexicans for holding the meeting. In a subdued joint appearance before the press in Mexico City, the two men described the meeting as warm, despite significant disagreements on issues of trade and immigration,” the New York Times reports.

Byron York: “Indeed, it was a big win — a very big win — for Trump. Going into a meeting with the potential for disaster — who knew how Pena Nieto would receive the world’s most controversial presidential candidate or what embarrassments might lie ahead? — Trump came out of the meeting looking very much like a potential President of the United States. Standing beside the Mexican leader in front of a green-gray granite wall reminiscent of the United Nations, Trump presented the picture of a statesman.”

Kentucky Lawmaker Will Quit Before Term Ends

August 31, 2016 at 5:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Retiring Rep. Ed Whitfield (R-KY) will resign from the House next week instead of serving out the rest of his term, which ends in January, The Hill reports.

Whitfield’s early departure will set in motion a special election for his successor to finish the remaining months of his term.

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

August 31, 2016 at 4:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“My preference of what’s next for Rick Perry is not to be in the United States Senate.”

— Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R), quoted by the Texas Tribune, tamping down speculation he’ll run against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in 2018.

Supreme Court Blocks Voting Rules In North Carolina

August 31, 2016 at 4:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A divided Supreme Court rejected an emergency appeal by North Carolina seeking to revive stricter state voting rules, which reduced the number of days for early voting and required photo identification at the polls,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The high court, in a brief written order, declined to stay an appeals-court ruling from July that struck down North Carolina’s Republican-backed voting rules. The appeals court found state lawmakers enacted the rules with the intent to discriminate against black voters.”

Rick Hasen: “The fact that this petition got four votes should be very depressing to those who have been hoping that perhaps Justice Kennedy and the Chief Justice would have had a change of heart on voter ID laws.”

Will Trump Get His Labor Day Reset?

August 31, 2016 at 4:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Klein: “Welcome to the most important day of Donald Trump’s campaign, at least going back to his convention. Twenty-four hours from now, Trump will (presumably) have a revised and revamped immigration policy. He will also have made a foreign trip to visit the government he’s tangled most with publicly. He’s seeking to look and act presidential, to signal that he’s listening, trying, and evolving.”

“At least in theory, it’s a sort of real-time display of the management approach he’s looking to bring to the nation’s highest office. It all comes at a moment of vulnerability for Hillary Clinton – see those new poll numbers that show trust in her eroding – that she’s chosen to spend almost exclusively with donors. If Trump needs a reset race before Labor Day, he’s doing what he can to get it. The master of optics and television imagery is getting some potentially valuable takeaways from the last day of August.”
